Editorial Review for Junior's Cafe – by Otis Rubottom

In Short
With its Victorian wallpaper and gilt-edged mirrors, Junior's semi-retro atmosphere attracts a crowd of young parents and Eastsiders who know a bargain when they see it. The gold vinyl booths also add a special touch. Breakfast offerings include hearty-sized egg scrambles loaded with treats like feta, garlic and spinach. Waffles are light and crispy, but there are no pancakes. Lunch fare includes a good selection of sandwichesm, including vegetarian options, and minestrone soup.

The Extras

The menu has a special section of children's portions, and judging from the number of kids present, it gets used quite a bit.

What a terrible experience! We watched someone wait 20 minutes just gor a greeting and water in the nearly empty cafe. Then another half an hour for overpriced eggs. When the waitress took a guy's food before he was finished (without asking), he tried several times to get her attention. She responded by embarassing him in front of us and the other group in the cafe. I couldn't believe how the waitress treated the guy!!! He wasn't even being rude or unreasonable, but she had taken his plate away while he was still eating! Then she attacked him and insulted him and I will NEVER go to Junior's again just from seeing that whole episode. That was some of the worst service I have ever seen in my life, she totally just ruined this couple's day- and she was clearly in the wrong. The food was decent, the decor is cute, but the attitude was terrible. Cross this one off of your list.

Pros: Decor is cute in a 60s kind of way

Cons: The "service" is horrific

Great food. The most beautiful presentation of french toast I've ever seen (fresh fruit french toast). Pleasant service. Go early to avoid the wait. Child-friendly (they have some kid books and toys to keep the little ones entertained at the table).

Pros: tasty food, pleasant service, lots of choices on the menu, kid-friendly

Cons: long wait on weekends after 10

It's cheap, chic and just off Hawthorne's beaten path.  See the full editorial review.
