Editorial Review for Hoda's Middle Eastern Cuisine – by Otis Rubottom
In Short
This simple, appealing corner space overlooks the bustle of Belmont and offers diners a casual, comfortable atmosphere. Start with a mezza platter (meat or vegetarian) that offers a sampling of excellent hummus, tabouli and baba ghanoush. The charred-yet-tender lamb kabobs are superb, as well as the beef shwarma (tender strips of beef and onions spiced and grilled). The pita bread is always baked fresh, and is delicious when stuffed with falafel and tahini.

First let's set this straight, this is 2008 and you do not accept Visa? This is hurting your business AND your employees because they get WAY less tips (Cooks + Servers). In consequence service is not ideal by the lack of motivation. Second, there are a lot of middle eastern places in town now. Way more than ever before, people know where to go (Cf Nichola's or Habibi) for outstanding food. The food need to excel at low prices. I got a skewer with rice for $11, that s reaching it!

My first experience of dinner at Hoda three years ago was delightful. The Mezza was spicy, hot, and delicious, the wine perfectly acceptable, and the service competent and attentive. Each subsequent visit has, however, been a disappointment; and this evening, downright depressing. The service was rushed, distracted, and unprofessional; the food bland, unspiced, and utterly tasteless. The hummous had all the zest and flavor of libary paste. The uninspired salad of iceberg lettuce flanked by two lonely tomato slices was liberally drenched in pure vinegar without benefit of oil (I am still attempting to unpucker my lips). This was outdone, however, by my "sauteed" eggplant, which consisted of about four small pieces of flaccid BOILED eggplant in a gelatinous brown sauce of chickpeas evidently flavored with an Oxo cube. The fact that I gave up after three disgusting mouthfuls did not spare me the stomach upset I consequently suffered. My postprandial dose of Pepto-Bismol was the most flavorful thing to pass my lips all night.
Pros: It's the only Middle Eastern restaurant in my neighborhood
Cons: It's the only Middle Eastern restaurant in my neighborhood
