Editorial Review for Old Wives' Tales – by Jenn Louis
In Short
Old Wives' Tales ranks among Portland's favorite kid spots. It's got a colorful playroom and plenty of dishes to please finicky palates--grilled cheese, noodles with Parmesan and cream, steamed veggies and burritos among them. Vegetarians can rejoice in having choices. In addition to daily specials, much of the lengthy menu is devoted to health-conscious and meat-free dishes. Best bets include Hungarian mushroom soup, spinach and potato omelette, poppy-seed pancakes, guacamole salad and the salad bar.

Not a bad place to eat, with the following warnings considered: -The Hungarian Mushroom soup is roughly 30% sour cream and is anything but fresh on most days. -Nearly everything, minus the meat and sandwiches is microwaved. -Most salad bar salads are 'walk-in specials': comprised of old salad dressings and and prep ingredients that are not selling. -Everything is way overpriced. Eat before 4:30 for a dollar off the same item, if it is on both lunch and dinner menus. The seafood is kept on ice (not frozen) until sold and fittingly can be quite odoriferous. There are some good items on the menu, if enough salt and pepper are added!! Enjoy!
Pros: Good for kids and groups
Cons: Most of the food is not good.

I had a pretty good meal, but the decor brings to mind a cafeteria or an old folks' home. They could stand to make it a lot more restaurant-y or cafe-ish.
