Neighborhood regulars, guidebook-toting tourists and bookish types from all over town frequent this Hawthorne landmark. The menu is eclectic enough for picky eaters and epicures alike. Breakfast eats range from brioche French toast to the popular ELO (egg-lox-onion scramble). Dinner is seasonal, simple and ethnically influenced. For starters, there are oysters with chipotle aioli or pork-pistachio pate. Risotto and ravioli (usually vegetarian) or grilled seafood are other strong options.

Curry Chicken was mediocre at best. The curry was standard yellow curry that tasted like it came from a can from Food 4 Less. The rice was also undercooked. Although I lived in SE Portland my whole life this was the first time I've been here and probably the last.

first off - Not comfortable unless you are clearly one of the totally hip and cool Hawthorne neighborhoodies. We went for Sunday breakfast - waited 15 minutes to order, then another 35 minutes to get food. Meanwhile two tables that had come in after us were served their food. I got the Brioche French Toast - totally gooey and undercooked inside.- Not edible at all. The side order of sausage was barely warm and hard as rock. My husband got the biscuits and gravy . It had obviously sat around and then was reheated by microwave - too long! the edges of the gravy were crusty all around the plate and it was way too hot to even think about eating. The biscuits underneath were nothing but mush.... Save your money!

It took us over an hour to be served, and the quality of food was poor. One in our party wanted vegetarian/whole food. He asked about the lentil stew, but this was made with chicken stock. He asked for a couple of minutes to make anothe choice, but it took 15 or so minutes for the waitress to return. At that point he ordered the lentil stew because there was nothing else on the menu. After about 20 minutes, the waitress returned and said they were out of lentil stew. She recommended the squash risotto. Then we waited another 30 minutes to get our food. The squash risotto was mostly risotto and the restaurant charged $15 for this (very overpriced for basically pasta). The other 2 on the party had the pork entre and this was dry and tough. We won't be going there again.
