Regardless of whether or not you love the food (it's standard fare, nothing too exciting, but made with care), you have to give this Hawthorne oldie but goodie props for slinging three meals a day for the past 30 years. I like the chicken and waffles, this place knows their waffles (if you haven't already been, check out their hole in the wall Waffle Window for a waffle ice cream sandwich).
My Uncle took me to Bread & Ink this morning for breakfast, and we had a fabulous meal. Our waiter Barron was more than accommodating. I had the ABC scramble (eggs, bacon and huge hunks of avocado). It was amazing. The hash browns were amazing, the coffee was amazing...do you see my point? We were sat right away, and we had a truly lovely time. Homemade ketchup, homemade jam.... the place is fresh and real. I will be eating there time and time again.
Delicious place for breakfast. I'm amazed by all the bad reviews, because Bread and Ink has quickly become my favorite place for breakfast. They're frequently pretty busy and a wee bit understaffed, but the food makes up for it. There's not much of a wait if any, and all the bread products I've had so far have been delicious and fresh. The last time I went, I got biscuits and sausage gravy, scrambled eggs with cheese and a side of peppered bacon (this ended up being FAR too much food for me, I had no idea their portions were this generous!). My breakfast partner got the french toast which was made with thick slices of french bread. We had so many leftovers that we had an entire third meal. I strongly suggest Bread and Ink to anyone looking for great breakfast food in the area, and everything we've had has been pretty darn good so far, but the biscuits and gravy are definitely my new favorite.
Bread & Ink too expensive for OK food.
We stopped there one evening around 7:30, decided to get a couple of burgers. We are not opposed to spending good money on an excellent burger, so going $10 for a burger isn't that big of a deal. However, we do expect an excellent burger for that price. We don't care about "home-made" mayo and mustard. We care about the quality of the beef and the flavor and texture of the bun. The beef was stunningly average, and very greasy. We know the difference between juicy and greasy. Greasy is the result of a patty with a high fat content. Juicy is the result of cooking it properly. The bun was just OK, but tough all the way through. That's OK for a good rustic sourdough roll, but these were just old-tasting. As for fries, nice choice on what seemed to be Yukon Gold potatoes, but there were only 5 or 6 "steak fries" on the plate. That's it, for around $10? We also had a slice of peanut butter pie, for a shocking cost of $7 for the slice! It wasn't THAT good! Final bill was almost $30 for 2 burgers and a slice of pie. Never again!
Want a better burger? Go to Foster Burger. About the same price, MUCH better beef, MUCH better bun, MUCH better fries.
You're on your own about the peanut butter pie.
Great Food but Crappy Service. I have been to Bread & Ink multiple times since I live in the area. The food is always super good, no complaints there. However, the service has stunk practically every time. It takes forever to get drink refills and multiple waitresses/waiters have been a bit rude and indifferent. The servers definitely need attitude adjustments because other then them the place is great. I still want to go there but it is getting harder to get my boyfriend to come along because he values service more then I do. I have heard this complaint from multiple people as well, so I hope they do something about it! There are lots of people out there looking for jobs, hire some good ones!
Bad Experience. Today, my husband, 7 year old daughter and I attempted to eat lunch at Bread & Ink. We waited for at least 15 minutes for a table and when one finally came available, it was given to the people who were put on the waiting list after us. When asked why, the hostess said, "I'm just doing the best I can do." Needless to say, we left.
Worst Restaurant in Portland.
We were seated quickly; had to wait 10 minutes to flag down a busboy for coffee. The waitress came about 5 minutes later; after waiting another 30 minutes to get our food (we asked both our waitperson and a 2nd to please check on our meal -- which was eggs!), no one would get back to us to give us an answer. When the server finally brought our meal, about 40 minutes after waiting in total, it was the wrong dish. At which point we got up and left.
Again: I've never walked out of a restaurant before. And I've never written a bad review before. But this experience was beyond acceptable.
Nice Experience. Last Friday we had dinner at Bread&Ink. As usual, great food. BUT: on Monday I realized my credit card was not in my billfold where it is supposed to be. Panic! Thinking back I figured the last place I had used it was at Bread&Ink. Gave them a call. Yes! They had it and agreed to mail it to me. On Wednesday it arrived. And in the envelop was a $5 gift certificate for the Waffle Window! Now that's class!
very happy hour!.
we got there around 4:30ish in the middle of the week, not too many others there, but just enough, the service was not too much,or too little he did a great job and seemed to be the only server there.
the food was to die for! and so inexpensive.
raspberry lavender lemon drop is my new favorite thing!
thanks Bread and Ink
Good little place. Good little place, I tend to alternate between this place and cup and saucer when I'm looking for breakfast on hawthorn. They are a little more expensive than cup and saucer, but the atmosphere is more "decorated" and the servers more... clean cut I want to say? Overall a good breakfast place, I have not been there for any other meal times as has been commented on below.
Mediocre. Curry Chicken was mediocre at best. The curry was standard yellow curry that tasted like it came from a can from Food 4 Less. The rice was also undercooked. Although I lived in SE Portland my whole life this was the first time I've been here and probably the last.
