Portland >India Oven Authentic Cuisine
Horrible owner, Pathetic food. This was the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant! We waited over an hour which we were understanding about as it happens. But when we got the food it was cold and burnt!! I tried to talk to a man who seemed to be the owner but he would not take back the dish. I told him I wouldn't pay for it and he said said I had to. I then told him I would gladly pay for my chai but nothing else. He then proceeded to insult my friend and I loudly by saying we had no money and we shouldn't be ordering if we had no money. We got up and walked out.
The pros and cons of "The Oven".
I have been coming to the India Oven for over 8 years now and so have seen every side of the food and the staff. The food has changed several times in the 8 years, but most recently , the quality has improved. The sauces for the Chicken Tikka masala and the Navratan Korma have become more flavorful and the consistency of the sauce has become thicker. The garlic naan now has more garlic on it, which is nicer then the lonely cilantro that used to be on the garlic naan, and the pakoras are some of the very best in portland , with a light dusting of black salt.
The restaurant has a small wait staff and sometimes the owners(husband and wife) themselves wait the tables, which is a very nice personal touch. The wife, in 8 years of going to the India Oven, has always been cordial, polite, helpful and kind...although when there are a lot of people in the restaurant, I can tell that she is under pressure and rushed. This is very normal, and something that I would probably feel if I were in her position. The chai at the India oven is unique and flavorful, and the biggest issue that I have with it is that I find it hard to say no to just one more cup--as it is something the the India Oven is quite generous with.
The husband often helps in the waiting of tables as well, and although he can be a bit difficult to get to know, he is very helpful and quite interesting to talk to when he is not busy with customers. In fact I have found all the wait staff very kind. As with any restaurant, there can be an off day with staff or food , and I have experienced this as well, but I remember that I have those days as well, and look more to the majority of buffets and dinners I have experienced in the last 8 years. While it is true that the shared bathrooms have not been the cleanest(although I have not been in them lately), the food is good--and when I come
here I can completely relax-stay as long as I like, and feel as welcome as if I were having dinner at home.
Horrible Food, Horrendous Service - One bad dump of a restaurant!. That sums it up ain't it. This is an apology of a restaurant - the food is bad (I think they hoodwink the goras who know nothing about Indian food, and get away with it), the service is poor, the ambiance is terrible and to beat it all - there's this owner lady that yelled at me when I asked for buffet refill because like many have said on this board, the buffet is never full and she gives you that guilt-trip look and stern hearing that you feel like never coming back. Avoid this place as if it were the worst restaurant you have ever been to.
wow! great food!!. The food was fresh and tasty and you can not beat the price! the service was above and beyond. Don't miss this place! THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good Curry, Excellent Naan. Go for Take-Out Option.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the past six reviews are some-how connected, maybe even the same person with a different sign-in. All reviews point out the exact same issues they seem to have had with this place, and all attack the "terrible staff" who seem to always shout at every customer. They also all discuss the toilets, and the poor food ? read them and tell me if I am wrong.
Whether or not it?s the same person writing all those damning reviews, my experience here however has never been as bad as they all proclaim it to be. Yes the toilets are horrible, but they have the unfortunate fate to have to share the toilets with the bar next door. This is a building management issue, not the restaurant owner?s full responsibility. Yes, the restaurant itself is very drab, and could do with an almighty cleaning, and that is why I will opt for getting my food to go nine times out of ten. The Staff are very nice, and pleasant. Any time we go in here to eat, or to pick up food, we get a nice friendly warm reception. And definitely do not get shouted at. They do have excellent curries. The Rogan Josh is one of my favorites, the Naan is excellent. I think their Chicken Tika Masala is just a little over buttery, but the chicken curry is very nice.
I am giving this 4 stars for food. The decor and restaurant itself; I could only give 2 stars.
Worst Indian Restaurant anywhere - Avoid this one!.
This is a horrible place to eat. Really.
1. The food is below average.
2. Lunch buffet never has a full menu, a foul-mouthed lady (the owner I presume) makes you wait for every dish that's missing from the lunch buffet, while she cooks, and she starts yelling at her customers if they ask for a missing dish.
3. The restrooms are dirtier than a rat-infested prison.
4. Extremely poor ambiance and smelly interiors.
Keep away for good.
Horrendous Place, Horrible Experience. Avoid this dump even if it were the last restaurant on the planet. I agree with the other reviews here -- this place is smelly, dirty and unhygienic toilets, incorrigible owner (a foul-mouthed Indian lady), bad food, unstocked buffet, expensive and decrepit.
This place is piece of scrap. The toilet is in pathetic condition that smells awfully bad. The food tastes the same always and is not sufficiently stocked. You will have to be prepared to wait for 30 minutes even during the buffet.
I will not recommend this place for normal human beings
Stay away this place.
My experience was very similar to the other ones. Bad service, below average food, unstocked buffet, temperamental owner/chef that yells at her customers.
Restrooms are smelly, dirty, brown/black toilets, broken and wet you know by what. No tissues, no soap...god knows how they're allowed to be in business. You'd think it'd be illegal elsewhere.
Stay away for sure.
Call it Shabby Owen !.
My family and friends traveled around 20 miles from Portland Airport with lots of expectation to relish the Indian food. The restaurant is centrally located and as nice interiors. Now comes the shock of our life as we entered the restroom for a wash. You will find restroom nice and clean even in the prisons or emerging countries. It smelled awfully bad all over the place and was very dark without much lighting.
The food is not at all good. The buffet was out of Indian breads and curry. You request the owner for more of these dishes, she yells at you very promptly.
Beware of this place the next time.
