Portland >Vincente's Gourmet Pizza
Love getting a booth, a beer and a pie at this snug pizzeria on a cold night--it's a relaxing sort of place where you never feel rushed. You can also take any kind of eater here, the menu has plenty of gold standards like Hawaiian and pepperoni, but you can also get more unusual combos like the lamb and roasted potato or spinach and prosciutto. Good Caesar, with homemade dressing.
Pinball? An indoor castle? Super Nintendo? Add some excellent pizza, salad and daily drink specials and you've got a recipe for a good time.
Worst Service... EVER. Good salad, even better dressing. Pizza pie was tasty and the sauce had hints of sophistication, but it was OVERLOADED with salt. Seriously, it was a salt lick. That diminished the other good qualities. As we left, we saw one of the chefs smoking outside the back door. Smokers tend to oversalt, so no wonder. In addition to the bartender (also the waiter) being (and I am sorry here but in all candor) a bit of an ass, the pizza chef was way over on the "I can't be bothered with your stupid requests" side of the kitchen. At first entrance, when you walk in, it appears as though the oven area is where orders are placed. We were scoffed at when we asked if that's where we should place an order. "No, this is -not- where you order a pizza," we were told in snark-tone with an incongruous glare; we were also not told where to place an order... so we found our way to the bar / seating area after looking 'round a bit and guessed that since that's where people were eating, we must be in the right place. We looked around and could find no servers or waiters so we took a couple of seats at the bar. The bartender (also the server on the floor) was so preoccupied with the "regulars" that he pretty much ignored us, and when he did finally get 'round to helping us put our request to the kitchen, he was so unfriendly that we felt as though we were inconveniencing him. Our order process was literally interrupted mid-way so he could serve one his regulars a brew--not ONCE, but TWICE. (We asked them if they were regulars afterward.) Once we actually got any help, it wasn't all that helpful. Even if the pizza pie were better, we would still never, ever go back. There are plenty of friendlier places in P-Town. Not worth the hassle, nor the condescending BS, and I can make a slightly better pie myself. It's a shame, because their pies have real potential. It left me wondering if they were coke-heads, or baked, or...? Hard to tell.
Dinning at Vincente's Since 1996:. Hipsterville: Personally, I have never had better pizza any place other than Vincente's. I stopped in the other night on a craving, and the staff were really cool. In fact, they've ALWAYS been cool whenever I've stopped in. Okay, there are a couple who aren't terribly warm and cozy, but if you're really nice to them, you generally won't have a problem. Rude service just comes part and parcel with any big city pizzeria. It's just a part of the charm and personality. As long as your food's good, who cares? Now, I will say that the other night when I was there, I asked the guy baking the pizzas for a couple of chocolate chip cookies, and he put a piece of wax paper in his right hand, and then with his BARE left hand, he plucked out the cookies and handed them to me on the damnd wax paper!!!! WTF??? If I owned Vincente's I would have fired that ignoramus on the spot. The occasional "curt" or rude attitude of a food service worker is fine by me once in a while because it's a part of the charm. But when an employee puts his presumably unwashed fingers on my food- THAT pisses me off. Seriously, it takes NOTHING to pick up a stomach bug or other illness from a restaurant, and when somebody touches my food with their bare fingers, man, that's beyond foolish. If it wasn't for that moron, I'd have given Vincente's a 5 star because their pizza is delish, the atmosphere is hip, and the service is pretty decent-- generally.
GREAT SERVICE!!!!!. I'm tired of people picking on service just because they are busy. SERVERS GET BUSY! It doesn't mean they are giving yoiu bad service. People are impatient. Have a damn seat. Take a look at the menu if you're not familiar with the place. Check out the beer list, the wines, the specials, just chill for a minute and they will get to you. I promise. Especially at a place like Vincente's where the bartenders are also servers and sometimes also the cooks. That adds up!!! These guys do a great job and continue to keep the morale up despite such snide comments on the great anonymous kvetch web.
The manager/owner needs to reevaluate their employees/servce. So we tried this place out last night and needless to say were uterlly disappointed and somewhat offended. First off we went to the pizza counter which was staffed with three people but was closed. SO we went to the seating area with a bar and there was noone to be found to order. Went to the Winking Toad bar and were greated by a Bartender who said, "Sorry we're just too busy right now." (There was noone in the bar but his friend who had a child inthere) So I did not wan to make a snap judgement so I asked my friends who had been in here and read the reviews and it seems that I am far from alone on this. The guys working the pizza blew us off and pointed to the sign said the station was closed so go to the bar to order. We went to both bars and were blown off and told they were too busy!! This was rediculous. My girfriend couldn't even finish her sentence before being stopped by some chump loser bartender who walked off while uttering that he was far too busy..... Wait I am wrong there was one couple in the bar... ONE! Need I say more. THis place blows and we'll try onece again since my friend is going there for his birthday this Friaday but I don' texpect much. Don't waste your time.
Not worth the time or money.. The pizza was greasy and wasnt cooked enough...How do you not cook a pizza long enough?? The service was unfriendly and the place was dirty. Don't waste your time or money.
Great salads, quick pizza. We lived in Ladd's for a year and Vincente's became our pizza place. Now, we go there before watching a movie at Cinemagic. Vincente's salads are delicious and big. Pizza toppings are varied and yummy. We always ask to have the pizza baked extra crispy--otherwise it can be a little soggy on the bottom in the middle. Favorite combination is kalamata olives, roasted garlic, and smoked mozzerella.
worst service i've had in Portland. The staff was ridiculously baked.. average pizza, good beer, decent prices, but probably the worst experience i've had in a Portland restaurant yet. Haha, they seriously dropped both our pizzas to the table across the way. Luckily after 15 freaking minutes they realized there mistake and took them off the table. And then never came back when we wanted more drinks. There are better pizza places.
leave the kids at home.
The pizza was good. But like many of the other reviews if you have a party larger than 4 I'd order take out and eat at home.
If you have kids do yourself and their servers a favor and eat at home
i asked the server at the counter about the quality of the service we recieved (ex: waiting for 5 minutes for napkins and utensils to arrive AFTER our food was on the table). our server gave me a laundry list of complaints concerning my children. Granted they are not perfect, but they were no louder or messier than your typical party of 6.
I left uncertain as to how my children's laughter and a spilled glass of water (I cleaned it up) explained bad service, but I guess it made sense to our waitress.
Great beer selection - Best crust anywhere - Super friendly staff.
An early weekday lunch led me to find Vincente's. When I attempted a visit to the Mcmenamins down the street and found it closed, I decided to give this pizza joint a try. Once I sat down and heard the special I was a bit skeptical, as walnuts are not exactly my idea of a great pizza topping, but once I saw their beer selection and had a slice of pie in front of me, I was a believer. Their crust is a wonderfully thin, crispy and sweet piece of heaven - just substantial enough to support the toppings, but thin enough to fold well, with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. The pizza was piping hot and not loaded down with a thick layer of sauce like most pizzas.
On my visit, I ordered up a pitcher of an old favorite, the Alameda Black Bear Stout. I was unaware that you could find any of Alameda's brews anywhere other than Alameda, but the server informed me that they do have a distribution deal. Once I was finished, I wandered over to their beer cooler, which houses some great brews that can be somewhat hard to find in town. After mulling over the selection, I walked out with two bottles of Pelican Pub and Brewery's award winning India Pelican Ale.
Our server, whose name I didn't get, was extremely friendly and helpful, going so far as having a chat with me about the fact that they sell Schlitz Ice 40oz bottles, something I found both astonishing and brilliant.
Overall, Vincente's is well worth a try for anyone who enjoys truly exceptional pizza, top-quality beer and service second to none.
