Great Dive bar. This was my first time and this is a pretty dive-y place, pure and simple. If that's not what you want, then you may end up having the same experience as the other reviewers that had negative experiences. $1 beer for happy hour? I'll definitely be back next time I'm in the area.

Lance Pours a Perfect Stiffy :). So a friend of mine said she always hang out here, when I went to look up the address I stumbled upon this crappy review. I was a bit skeptical and wonder if it was SO horrible, then why did she hang out there so often? It's definitely your whole in the wall, dive bar. But that's the draw, there is a reason it's full of regulars. It doesn't take long to feel like your best friends with them all. Great interesting people, good appetizers (love the meatballs) shuffleboard, jukebox & stimulating atmosphere. Drinks are stiff, bartenders super friendly & always working their a** off. Oh & they definitely love it when you tip well, they deserve it. As for the "hipster bullies" comment. Come on, pull the stick out , they're all super polite & wouldn't hurt a fly, with the exception of biting off an occasional ear :) Love it & will continue to go back!!!

Seriously???. I found this bar to be one of the worst I've visited in Portland. The staff was rude except to the regulars, who were more like a group of hipster bullies rather than bar patrons. Most of these regulars were allowed to pour their own cocktails without pay and one bartender was too intoxicated to serve. If you weren't a part of their club, the bartenders wouldn't acknowledge you. I waited 15 minutes for a bartender to come back behind the bar from a make-out session with his lady. The bathrooms were disgusting and when the bartender was asked for toilet paper, he stated it wasn't his problem.

Want to ruin your night out on the town??? Head on over to the Speakeasy. (Just don't expect to get a drink.)

favorite bar. one of my faves. bartender always remembers me and service is prompt. no table service but i'm used to that. everybody here is friendly including the customers and there's never an issue. shuffle board and pinball bring me back here for a nice afternoon escape. i love the decor, my favorite style. you'll just have to see it for yourself.

Cool place to hang it will beome my local spot happily. I guess since I'm a dorkster the bartender Junior and Jake spoke to us for about 1/2 an hour. Although the music was lacking I had a fulfilling Tuesday night. Seriously the place was great I felt welcome and will go back soon for affordable drinks(a pitcher for $5) pool and shuffleboard. Don't let the last loser steer you wrong check it out yourself. And although there were locals there they will chat with you too.

Don't go because you want to shoot pool.... The review states that this place is not trendy but I'm going to have to disagree about this. The people that appear to frequent Gils are what I like to call "Dorksters", so far down the dork path that they think they're hip, and therefore are as trendy as any other group (if you aren't one of them you won't feel welcome). Don't play the 'wrong' music on the jukebox you could be run out on a rail, also there is only one fairly mediocre pool table.

Good place, but.... Speakeasy is a cozy and fun place to hang out. The first couple of times that I went there, I was greatly impressed with the friendly staff and patrons. One of the best shuffleboards in town! Great jukebox and music choices thanks to the staff.

But on too many occasions recently, I've found that the staff members find great joy in ignoring anyone who is not a regular, making fun of people who are enjoying an excitable game of shuffleboard (or just sitting on a bar stool), and acting in the typical "I'm too good to serve you" mentality that seems to be the norm in the Portland service industry.

Speakeasy Tavern is one of my favorite spots in P-town... but damn, the grouchy-hipster bartenders sure do know how to put the funk in "P-funk"!

it rules. i can always escape to the speakeasy for my lunchtime beer & never be seen by any of my co-workers. this bar rules because not everyone knows about it. its non-descript in the best kind of way. all the bartenders are super nice & very friendly. also, the other review says it closes early, thats no longer true. they have a new owner now.

says what it does, does what it says. not too fancy. a great place to go on a saturday night to get away from the meatheads. great jukebox, and you can bring your own records to play if the turntable is working. and i think they had shuffleboard. only downside is it closes early
