In Short – The atmospheres here range from an old-school bar with retro blue-vinyl bar stools to a vinyl-themed dining room to a more formal dining room with tall windows fronting the street. There's also a nice patio out back. The menu covers the all-American basics, from pasta and sandwiches to surf and turf. The patty melt is a perfectly gooey combination of a burger topped with grilled onions and Russian dressing, served on grilled rye bread.

Twice in one day...I suppose that deserves a review... We came in this morning for the bloody mary bar- I usually hang at this place at night- but had to check this thing out...two words LOVED IT....and now I'm sitting in their tropical paradise patio getting served by our favorite server Melissa...Let summer weekends never end.

  • Pros: Bloody Mary Bar, Patio, PBR tall boys, Melissa
  • Cons: Portland won't let us smoke in bars anymore :(

Warning Drunk People and Too Local

by moonerbing

Well I'm guessing from reading the reviews that the staff takes after their owner. Here is my experience. Along with all the other complaints which are true: Service is poor like being a snooty is a cool thing, Food subpar (I mean what do you expect at 2 in the morning, anything’s really good) but I did wait nearly an hour. BUT here is where it gets interesting. So after our food we started to eat and a group of four came in, one man being extremely large, probably 350 pounds. I didn't really notice his weight until he was half unclothed and prancing around the bar/grill sweating like a pig and lip syncing Bohemian Rhapsody! It was funny at first and no one seemed to mind not even our server, who obviously was friends with the bunch of locals. But after a spell of that and him engaging our table of 7 it was quite annoying to say the least. One of my friends addressed our server saying "Hey this is unsanitary, and rude, and even more ignorant of the staff not to do anything about it" he asked for a discount for the long wait and the ruckus of the fat man, she simple said no and went away. My friend came back to the table and was expressing his distant for the whole thing when the overweight Karaoke singer came up and confronted him with force and aggression. The server stepped in front and a screaming match ensued, along with his entourage waiting for a fight to break loose. The server slipped away to fetch a manager (if you can call him that) and the only thing he asked is if we had paid and if we had to get the F*&$ out. All this time my friend simply saying that the whole thing was unsanitary and inappropriate, we left got in our cars to 4 screaming locals telling us to go back to Arkansas! Moral of the story, Portland is weird but drunken locals are dangerous. I will be doing everything in my power to spread the word of the unsanitary and hostile environment with the lack of control that the staff and locals displayed! WILL NEVER RETURN AGAIN.

  • Pros: Cant think of any
  • Cons: Drunks, Locals, Service, Ownership, Staff

Many a Brilliant Idea Developed over Brunch

by northwestshopper

Holman's is a dive bar, all night diner with goofy drunken people, three in the morning when you can't see going home just yet, Sunday morning brunch with a good pal developing brilliant business ideas and subsequent meetings to close the deal, sort of place. The wait staff is vaguely friendly and decent, but they leave you alone to chat and are usually available when you need them. The food is diner mediocrity perfected. The wheel spinning is cute and kitchy, as is the decor, which only adds to its general good vibe. This is a great Portland place.

  • Pros: Relaxed, Comfortable Atmosphere; Off-Street Parking; Coffee Creamer Variety
