Pump up the music

by XxXoOoXxX

I have climbed at 4 different gyms steadily and a few others as a drop in. PRG isn't as friendly as I would hope for a gym. I think it's because it has so many clients that it's hard to feel part of the climbing community there. I've been going occasionally for about 2 yrs now. I recognize a few faces. But, if you want to be part of a climbing crew here you really need to make an effort.

the routes are good and they change often. go during the day to avoid evening crowds. and, bring an ipod because music isn't very loud if you like a good beat to climb to while you are inside.

this is a good place to train for climbing outside or a great place to get started in climbing. it is fun for all levels.

Tons of fun!

The gym - Lots of routes that are changed at a perfect infrequency. Once you've successfully climbed all the routes, there's probably a new one ready for you. Also, once top rope climbing is mastered, you can move onto lead climbing. There's always a challenge to take on, but there's easier routes for a more relaxing experience. The extra exercise equipment and weight room are definitely a great addition. The staff - Friendly and always willing to help out. The classes are taught marvelously. The people - The gym is pretty big, so even at really busy times, it isn't suffocating. Most people climb in groups, but if you show up without a buddy there's most likely someone else flying solo, or a group willing to let you join in. Most are courteous and willing to give advice. The only drawbacks -- parking can be crazy when it's really busy. Also, I should also mention that on those busy days, the foot odor hits you like a ton of bricks when you walk through those double doors! I'm hoping the ventilation is better during the summer.

PRG's new location at Burnside & Sandy is really large! If you can come during the day on a weekday you may have the whole gym to yourself. On weekday evenings they can be very busy, but there's always something available to climb. The clientele is diverse; tiny kids as well as some qualifying for the senior discount! The staff is friendly. The routes are changed regularly to keep things interesting. They also have some cardio machines, a weight room and showers though I've never used those facilities. Admission is expensive, but they're open late and it's about the most fun kind of exercise you can get in the winter, and not half bad in summer either.
