Cute old-fashioned bakery that's made cakes for many a Portlander's special occasion over the years. Best combo: white cake with raspberry and whipped cream layers, covered in marzipan. If you don't need a whole cake, stop into their After Dark dessert cafe Friday and Saturday nights from 5-10 for some very dramatic desserts.
Great pastries, chocolates, petit fours, etc. Beautiful decorative cakes. Their adjoining After Hours café is a romantic destination for coffee/cocoa and dessert.
Not an Old Classic anymore...just OLD..
My fiance and I visited JC's to sample wedding cake flavors and styles. To our surprise we were sharing our special experience with 2 other parties 7 people in all including us. We sat down at a table with a vinyl covering and were curtly greeted by what seemed to be an inexperienced young person who then brought our cake samples out on a paper dixie plate and proceeded to point out our options and handed us a menu, then left. After working the room this employee asked from across the room if we wanted coffee, which took long to get and it too came in a paper reciprocal. The service was enough to make our special moment so UN-special that when tasting the cake the flavors seemed less then mediocre and everything was topped with bland flavored butter cream. The texture of the cake seemed like ithad been in a fridge for a day or so and we were not the least bit swept way. When mentioning that we wanted a specific flavor it seemed too much to ask and we were shot down as if it was an odd request to ask for such a flavor as almond. Which is a typical European flavor. ?Not in wedding cakes, it would be really expensive? the sales person said, instead of trying to accommodate us ?not knowing that price wasn?t an object here we were obviously discouraged?
Weddings are supposed to be memorable in every sense of the word and as a professional event planner I will never refer any of my brides or clients to this store as I want for myself as well as my clients a beautiful, special and memorable experience in all of their planning.
Point is the service is a "C" at best, bathroom was dingy, staff was inexperienced and had not a natural hospitality bone in her body. Decor on the walls was dusty and nothing about our encounter was ?a piece of cake?
A wise mentor always said ?If they love us when they leave us, they?ll be back? I guess you know what I will be doing?
If you have to park a few blocks away you get an extra piece of guilt free chocolate. Works for me!. Excellent product, professional counter staff. Preferred the chocolates to some of the more la de da (read$$$) candy shops downtown and the staff was helpful and courteous even when the husband couldn't make up his mind about which pastry he wanted. We were visiting from a couple hours up I-5, but we'll definitely be back.
A change for the better. I've been going to JaCivas for a while now, and I agree with the bad service remarks, until recently. It looks like JaCivas has gotten a makeover. They have gotten new store staff, and no longer have the rude little girl working in the front. There are new faces and better attitudes, which makes for a lot better service. They also have a dessert place on the weekends. It's called JaCivas after dark, it's pretty amazing, really great desserts, nice atmosphere, and very pleasant wait staff. If you havent been in a while, I would give it another try, you will probably have better service than you have had in a long time. That's been my experience there lately.
A fresh change... I've been a customer of Jaciva's for a little over a year & have also experienced the negative side of past customer service, but I've noticed that over this past year.. alot of changes have been made. The biggest improvement is the atmosphere & customer service. Also the faces in the store front have changed. The wedding cake department seems to have had an overhaul as well. I would have to say my favorite dessert is their Lemonade Cake.. or something like that. It is so tasty & moist! The parking is difficult, but what shop along Hawthorne doesn't have poor parking availability? The positive changes out-weigh the negatives for me & I do recommend this bakery- especially if you're on this side of town.
Horrid service. I cannot help but think that some of the recent positive reviews were done by employees. I am disgusted by the poor caliber of customer service at this place. The reviewer "toddsmom" has is dead on. Catty high school girls is exactly the experience I feel in Jaciva's. Too bad a place with such great product ruins it with a lousy front counter staff.
Bad customer service, good pastries. I have been a customer for years and have witnessed the steady decline in customer service to the point of it being unbearable. These "women" that they have running the show at the counter seem more like catty high school girls rather than the professional staff one would expect from such a Portland institution. I have heard one of these girls referring to the owners as "Grandma" and "Grandpa", so it seems clear that employing family is one of the problems there. The cakes and pastries there are quite good, although nothing that you couldn't find somewhere else with less attitude. Parking is also an issue. Only street parking is available, and with no crosswalk or stoplight within a few blocks, it can be difficult to get there.
Wonderful Bakery!!!!. I went to JaCiva's to have my wedding cake made. I was VERY Happy with the service provided. The selections of styles and flavors were unbelievable!!!! I had an idea of what I wanted my wedding cake to look like and the wedding coordinator made it come to life. My guests were floored with the Beautiful Cake Created just for me. If I ever need another Wedding Cake, (knock on wood) JaCiva's will be the one for me.... Who knows maybe a Baby Shower cake will be my next request... Thank You JaCiva's for being part of my special day.....
While the food is grand, the service STINKS.
I concur with the posts lambasting the customer service......I've been going to Jaciva's for years now and the customer service has deteriorated so much that I don't think I could reccomend them anymore. While the food itself is top notch, the front counter people (who have already been named in a previous post) really do not care about they way they treat the people that make sure that they have a job. Rudeness, shortness, ignoring customers....these are all problems! Big ones!
I could probably reccomend Jaciva's again if the ownership took an actiuve interest in the way the front counter people treated the customers. But until then, don't bother.
Worst customer service ever.
Imaging being made fun of by the very person who just helped you. This is what I witnessed the other day....an overweight person being mocked after she left by the counter help.
I have been to Jaciva's several times and have witnessed everything from downright rudeness, to people (including myself) being completely ignored.
The other day, I witnessed a woman being openly mocked for being overweight and a lesbian. Some of the counter people have NO business whatsover dealing with the public (especially the wedding coordinator who shall remain nameless).
How a place with such appalling customer service got to be so well reknowned is beyond me. I'll certainly never give them my business again.
For more than 35 years, this bakery has been whipping up decadent European chocolate, truffles, tortes, cakes and pastries..
Try the locally famous cheesecakes, which come in a variety of flavors, or the sinful 7th Heaven cake. The bakery makes its own chocolate in the Swiss style--its signature is the shaping of white chocolate into bows, lace or roses for stunning edibles. Brides and grooms can choose from six kinds of cake and more than 20 varieties of fillings. Display cakes and picture books help couples decide on the look.
