Editorial Review for Romo's Latin Quarter – by Kristin Kaye
The Scene
If there were such a thing as a Mexican diner, this would be it. Simple, straightforward dishes with equally straightforward service and price. Adobe-style decor gives Romo's its ethnic flair. Huge storefront windows afford diners perfect people-watching position looking out onto Hawthorne.
The Food
Comfort comes in simplicity with starters like chicken and guacamole quesadillas. Fresh-made corn chips make nachos a treat. Entrees are predictable but dependable. The steak fajita burrito is packed with strips of beef, onions and peppers, enough for lunch the next day. Seafood fajitas can be overcooked and less fulfilling. But don't miss the green-chili chicken enchiladas, rousingly spicy and stuffed with tender chicken. Vegetarian options abound and combo plates let you mix things up a bit. Margaritas are mediocre, but no Mexican dinner would be complete without one.

Yep, the food was great. But when that bill came and we discovered we’d been being charged for something we were led to believe was free, we were left with a bitter taste for this new business in our sweet little neighborhood of Montavilla. Shame on them. We won’t be returning and we’ll be telling our friends. The Story: We were seated and immediately served chips and salsa (very good and unique). They were so good that even when our food came, we asked for more. Our meal was satisfying. The service was pleasant. Prices were fair. Then we got our bill. When you sit down at the Latin Quarter you are immediately served chips and salsa (at a Mexican restaurant, isn’t that a common practice?) but you are never told that each bowl is $2. That may not seem like a lot. But it adds up quickly. We never ordered them. They were placed in front of us. We weren’t asked “would you like chips and salsa?”. And we were very clear with our waitress that this was our first visit. Seems a little shady for the new business on the block to take advantage of customers that have been trained to expect free chips and salsa when you eat at a Mexican restaurant. Sorry Romo. You get a lonely one star from this hungry family. Note to restaurant owners: It doesn’t really matter how good your food is. If you make us feel we’ve been lied to or taken advantage of, we leave thinking poorly of you. And we tell our friends.
Pros: Food was scrumptious.
Cons: oh so many... read my review.

My wife and I have been eating here for 20 years and have never been dissapointed. Margaritas are ALWAYS great, best salsa, dishes you won't find anywhere else. Might be hard to find a parking spot, but I would walk a mile for Romo's food. Sure they may be short staff once in a while but isn't everybody? Food always makes up for it and we love Romo.. Highly recommend to try it!
