Portland >Bars & Clubs > Watertrough Saloon
One of the half dozen or so dive bars squeezed into a potent little slice of upper Hawthorne (aka the Barmuda Triangle), this spot's got pool and shuffleboard, very cheap PBR, and a well worn retro feel that somehow grows on you.
One of my favorite bars in PDX.
I've been a semi-regular since college around 1999. I frequent the highest class bars to the most off the wall dives. Over the years friends of mine played shows next door and we'd always end up at the Trough by the end of the night. It can be smokey, it could be more clean, and there are one or two oddballs that show up yet there's something about this place that I hold near and dear to my heart. The beers are very cheap, the service has always been good (same bartender all those years), good jukebox, and cheap pool/shuffleboard. It's not a place for bar snobs, first dates, or the easily offended. Scratch that...if he/she likes the Watertrough on your first date they may be a keeper.
Not much has changed over the years and maybe that's why my friends and I love the place so much. There's nothing glamorous about it but there is a certain degree of character and charm. A few of the patrons my be odd or burned out but they're friendly and this place is always drama free. If you're simply interested in having a beer, listening to some good music, and not worried about impressing anyone this place is definitely worth checking out.
I hope one day I'll have the opportunity to have my first father-son beer together at this place. Cheers!
This place RULES!!!!!. The Watertrough saloon boasts some of the cheapest beers in town. The chili is awesome (and at 3.25 a bowl? hell yeah!!). the bartenders are always cool and never too busy to get what you need...The pool tables are just .25 a game and the jukebox is kickin with a variety of music genres to fit any taste. SHUFFLEBOARD $2 AN HOUR!!! LETS GO TO THE TROUGH!!! The little known GEM on SE Hawthorne
I need antibotic after going in this place. CLEAN this place is disgusting. Clientel tweakers and old burnouts and I'm talking about the bartender too.
It will become your livingroom.
The best, and one of the few remaining, taverns in Portland.
Cheap beer; four pool tables offering $0.25 games; bartenders with massive personalities; great juke box; did I mention CHEAP beer...
I don't know what the other review was talking about the food. It's not a restaurant so it isn't fancy, but it's not bad. The owner makes the chili and chili dip, which are taste treats. They also have veggie corn dogs.
If you're looking for flashy, this is not the bar for you: Don, the owner, hasn't changed ANYTHING since the 70s. If you're after a solid place to drink with your friends, or sit at the bar and enjoy the bartender, this is your spot.
dont eat the food & you'll be okay. 25 cent pool tables, $1.35 tall boys of PBR, even the brokest of the broke can frequent this place.
