Portland >Captain Jack's Tattoo Studio
I got what I came for!!! I wanted to be
a licensed Tattoo Artist... Enrolled in this program, and learned everything (and then some) I need to know to pass my licensing exam. I even have several job connections now too!
Thanks Captain Jack's!
Horrible school + horrible tattoo shop. This school is such a joke. A friend of mine recently went there and it was a constant rip-off. The owner takes your money and teaches nothing in return. The students are left to teach each other unsupervised in a room full of worn, broken furniture. and contaminated supplies. The whole atmosphere of the place has a junky, worn down feeling. Unsupervised students learning to tattoo equals contaminated shop. Even the "shop" side has flash from the 90s with junk everywhere. Youll notice everytime someone writes a bad review 2 new "amazing" reviews come up soon after. The state should do the tattoo scene a favor and close this shop down. Its not "grudged" students that writes these reviews its people paying $6000 and learning nothing about tattooing.
Thanks Captain Jacks!!.
I have to give props when props are deserved, and this place deserves ALL props! I graduated the program & I too, am a ink slinging, LICENSED artist. All the artists and instructors were great and I invested wisely picking this school. At Captain Jacks, man they keep it real and that's what made me successful in the biz!
To the writer below "RandomForward, I can tell by reading your bunk post that you are a grudged student. Dave runs a tight ship, and he should. If you are doing your work, he's your best friend. I had other artists in the studio let me couch surf as I live 2 hours from Portland. these guys all opened their homes up to me, and sean even met with me 1:1 to give me a good polished education and got me over my humps! I Thanks guys!! I have learned the industry and am more successful now than I ever thought possible...
I will keep hitting you all up, and sending my businesss your way!
I got through the program, I got my license and now got my own shop! I got a great foundation to build off too! Thanks to all man!

BEST STUDIO EVER, AND BEST SCHOOL TO ALL OF PORTLAND!!!
THANK YOU CAPTAIN JACK'S FOR BEING HERE FOR OVER 15 YEARS NOW, AND TEACHING & LICENSING SOME OF PORTLAND'S BEST ARTISTS!!
KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK, WE ARE SO GLAD YOU ARE THERE!!!!
IF YOU WANT TO LEARN IT AND LEARN IT RIGHT....THIS IS YOUR PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't even think of going to school here!.
I wish I could give it -1 star. And I think that a lot of their "reviews" on here were written by shills, or their own employees.
The owner is making money hand over fist and doesn't teach anything. Students use binders full photocopies from commonly available tattoo books and the students who have been there longest teach the students who are new arrivals. Sometimes the employees would "let" the students watch them work, but that was rare. There was no instruction at all, except from other students, little supervision, no text books, no discussion of business aspects or portfolios or getting employment as a tattoo artist. Also, no discussion of art (!), let alone lessons. On top of all of that, the owner is very grouchy and often yells at the students, making for an oppressive environment where everyone is walking on eggshells.
I've come to find out that they have a terrible reputation with other shops and they're known as being a total joke for their tattoo school. This was a huge waste of time and money. Not educational and not fun.

Love Love LOVE!!. Well, I decided to get a tattoo for my 7 month old son on my wrist. this was my 2nd tattoo and i was a little nervous as it's just a little bigger than my first and in a place I get to look at it for the rest of my life as opposed to on the back of my neck, out of sight, out of mind. I walked in on my lunch break, made an appointment for 7pm the same day and i am SO pleased. SO SO SO pleased! Steve did an amazing job, made me feel very at home and not nervous at all. Of course, it's never as bad as you think it's going to be once the needles start buzzing and he did a fantastic job, suggesting a little color as opposed to straight up black and grey. I'm so glad I listened - though i must give credit where credit is due, Sean actually verbally made the suggestion about the color, so, thanks Sean! just shows that these guys know what they're talking about! - my tat is amazing! :) I will be back as soon as I can be and Steve, I'll follow you wherever you go... as long as it's not somewhere crazy far away like... china or something.
Another terrible experience at this place.
I got a cover up here about a year ago, well I wanted to get a cover up. Instead, I got a crappy crooked bare minimum design. The artist told me to scrub it when I got home?!?!? I think he must have known he screwed up and wanted me to try to "wash off" whatever I could. Aftercare instructions were basically "do nothing". I left without even being taped up, there was only a piece of gauze stuck to me and I was sent on my way, no paperwork, no nothing. I have recently come to find out that not covering the tattoo properly is actually illegal and against code in Oregon.
The original tattoo, even though it was kindergarten style India ink from when I was 13, was not even close to covered up.
I have recently had the same tattoo repaired at another shop here in Portland, a "cover-up of a cover-up" (SAD!!). My current artist was horrified at the job Captain Jack's had done. It was very difficult to correct the many mistakes that were made, but it looks beautiful now.
The experience was so awful, I guess I should have known from being able to walk in and get tattooed the same day that something was up. I would give NO stars if it were possible, but I have been pierced here and had a fine experience, even though the guy was kind of rude, he did a good straight job.
Venture here at your own risk. I don't want to name anyone specifically but the artist I saw is still employed here so beware guys.
My Honest Review. I got a tattoo done and he was wonderful, great job and I liked the way it turned out!
DONT GO HERE.
DONT GO TO SCHOOL HERE ! YOU WILL GET RIPPED OFF AND WONT LEARN A THING!
ONE OF THE WORST REPUTATIONS AMONG OTHER SHOPS IN PORTLAND !
