In Short
Since 1946, Portlanders have lined up for this steak joint with a family-room vibe. Patterned blue carpet covers the floors, and a colorful mural of friendly faces blankets one wall. The real star here is the meat, from a six-ounce filet mignon to the 72-ounce top sirloin. Baked, sauteed and fried seafood options are also available. Entrees come with bread and a relish tray; soup, salad or slaw; fries, baked potato or rice; and dessert.

Insider Tips
The ExtrasThe 72-ounce steak is free--if you can eat it within 60 minutes, along with all the trimmings. Otherwise, it's $50. This only applies on weekdays and the rules are many and strict, so ask for a copy of them before you attempt it.
Know Before You GoSayler's doesn't take reservations, but if your party is large, the restaurant will sometimes make an exception on a slower night.

We ate at Sayler's last night and our service was great. We waited maybe 20 minutes but Teri our server was on the ball and she got right down to business. The atmosphere is totally 70's but it's fun and funky that way. Don't expect the hip "metrosexual and MBA toting yuppy" set here, this is a steakhouse from the time of steak houses. The cowd is mixed if slightly tilted to the 50+ set. The food: Overall the food was good. We enjoyed the prime rib, filet and ribeye. Meat was tender and had some flavor. The relish tray was very cool and we ordered a heap of onion rings. (First timers might want only a half order.) This is an honest meat and potatoes joint, not a lot of flash or glitz. If you looking for that skip Sayler's. The service: We had great service from a waitress who knew her menu and knew how to please customer's with just the right amount of attention. Our wait was very reasonable for 6pm on Friday night at 20 minutes although it did pick up considerably after we arrived. (Hint: go earlier for faster seating) Overall: A very good place to enjoy an piece of meat and potatoes type of dinner. Not flashy but comfortable enough to have a meal and good conversation. The drinks from the bar are good sized and well made, a rarity in Portland. I wouldn't expect Haute Cuisine, but you can expect a decent meal at a good value.
Pros: Drinks, value, service
Cons: parking, no phone reservations

Sayler's is my absolute favorite steakhouse. I am really surprised about the negative feedback. I have been going to Sayler's for over 15 years and have never had a bad experience. I think you should anticipate slower service during the dinner rush, but I have and always will strongly recommend this restaurant.
