Tips for Acapulco's Southwest Gold

Used to be good, now it rivals the trash can in the back alley. I've been going to AGSW for the past 10 years or so and I think tonight was the last time. Service was not only terrible I was beginning to wonder if the waitress was going to take matters into her own hands and start throwing people out! Geez! On top of that the food was horrible. I used to really enjoy coming to this place, the food wasn't really great or anything, but it was good and filling...I had to stop at McDonalds on the way home just to fill up.

If you haven't been there before, don't waste the time trying it out. If you have been there before then I'm afraid you're in for a big disappointment. Too bad...it was a fun little whole in the wall and actually kind of fun to go to every once in awhile...now, well...like I said, I get better food at McDonalds...

Yuck, Yuck, Yuck...and then you have to pay for it. We used to enjoy Acapulco's Gold, but as of late, both the food and the service has gone downhill. We went there for dinner tonight, but we plan to never return. Here's why:

- HORRIBLE SERVICE: our "waitress" must have trained at Guantanamo Bay. Her voice sounded like Cheney's on a good night. She snarled. Kind of scary. When I let her know that my maragrita glass tasted like soap, she didn't do anything to fix the problem. She just told me about all of the reasons that why, OF COURSE it tastes like soap, because of the special glass rinse they use. She never brought my husband's sour cream. Her manner was more than brusque - Prussian dominitrix comes to mind. She was simply unprofessional and she NEVER smiled. When my beer came, I felt like she might need it more than me.

- ABYSMAL FOOD" - Have you noticed the plates keep getting smaller at AGSW? The rice and beans looked and tased like reheated leftovers from last week. My husband's enchilada tasted like burned rice. Our son's nachos had at most a teaspoon of cheese on lurking among the stale chips.

- OUTRAGEOUS COST for CRAPPY FOOD in a DIRTY RESTAURANT: We didn't get to express our disapproval by leaving a small tip, because AGSW adds an automatic tip for groups of 6 or more. So our "waitress" got 20 bucks for delivering crappy food to our dirty table and for not doing a darn thing more.

YUCK!

Once great mexican joint resting on wilted laurels. This used to be a fine place to grab a bite in a relaxed "do as you please" atmosphere. I remember innovative nightly specials and an overall sense of good value. While the passable service hasn't noticeably deteriorated, this perhaps is the only thing that hasn't. For instance, years ago a trip to the bathroom entailed traipsing through the clean and presentable dish washing area and a greeting from an offbeat and oddly hysterical bathroom mural. These days it seems there is rarely anyone scheduled to wash dishes, as the dish area is commonly quite disorganized and very dirty. Even the bathroom mural has become sad and dilapidated with the paint literally flaking off the wall. The food has fallen to a level of mediocrity that might not be quite so disappointing if it weren't so starkly contrasted with the previous high standards. What's surprises most of all, is that as less and less effort is put into this now shabby cuisine, the prices continue to climb higher and higher. What has become of this once pleasant dining establishment is nothing if not a shame.

Good food, great service, comfortable ambiance. I love this place and have been coming here to eat for more than 10 years. It is flexible enough to manage with a group of kids but great for a date night out as well. They have a great collection of hot sauces at the old drugstore counter along the back of the room. Pinnatas hanging from the ceiling. A set of daily specials that are usually wonderful. Plenty of veggie and vegan alternatives for that crowd. Service is usually excellent. All in all, a place I really like and highly recommend.

This is "Our Place". My wife called to see if and where I'd like to go to dinner; I said "let's go to that place we went that time." We met at Acapulco's 1/2-hr. later. It's not exciting or "in" and hasn't changed in all the years we've been going...maybe that's why we like it so much; we're Episcopalians and predictability counts big with us! I always go for one of the specials - they're always good and give the cooks a chance to show off their creativity with moles, chipotle and other more exotic flavors. It ain't Taco Bell or the so-called authentic places with the melted cheese over sloppy refried beans and wilted greens. Service is exceptional and friendly. The guacamole appetizer is a favorite.
