Gateway Breakfast House.
The "Gateway Breakfast House" might be a little rough
around the edges, but in the well over 15 years that I've been eating there, I have NEVER had a meal that wasn't to die for. To my taste, their breakfasts are DELICIOUS and huge! Their Hamburgers & Rubens are wonderful...damn! My mouth is watering. I have ALWAYS been treated very well at the "GBH" with my smallest request being catered to. Waiting for a spot to open (yes, it's "that" busy) has never been a disappointment, quite the contrary, it's always been 'more' than worth the eating experience... "just the fax ma'am" (one of my favorite "die hard" quotes). ENJOY!
VERY UNSANITARY!!. Well, since I saw this place was on the best of city search I thought I would check it out since it is not too far from my home. From the outside it does not look like much. Upon enterihg I noticed it was filthy! I did sit down and orderd coffee. As I sat there food was served to the table next to me. It looked and smelled pretty good, but I could not get over the 20 or 30 flys buzzing around my head. It has been cold at night so it made me realize that these flys were living off the filth from this resturant. After leaving I felt dirty and grimmy, and in the need of a shower. This could probably be a decent place to get breakfast if they would just clean the place up. ALOT! I don't like negative reviews but this is what happend. sorry. I did pay for the coffee. Although the cup was dirty and sticky. YUK!
Place for good food. This place was delicious. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his taco omelet and my country breakfast was very satisfying. The wait was a little long, but really nit that bad for a Sunday around 12:00. I will definitely go back again.
We were treated like dirt. First please understand that I have never written a review before, but I felt obligated to write something because of how they treated us. They do not have disability parking, and it was really hard to move around the building because of the proximity of the tables. Although the small size of the parking area may not necessarily require disabled parking, it would be nice. The problem was with the wait staff, the server was incredibly rude and seemed like she was doing us a favor just by taking our orders. We placed our orders and when they arrived, although they are fast in their service, the order was complete wrong. When we explained this to the server, she seemed upset that we would not eat the food anyway and took the plates away while trying to slam plates and generally make as much noise as possible. Once our corrected order arrived, we thought everything would be fine. I ate about half my vegetarian meal when I bit into a big slice of bacon. Being a vegetarian, I was not expecting to find that in my meal. My friend and I being completely disgusted with the entire level of service decided to leave. I explained my situation to the cashier who was indifferent to our situation, and was glad that we were leaving. Overall, I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy.
The best greasy spoon in portland!.
The Gateway BH is a super locals joint! You usually see regulars and an occasional first timer. But, once you have eaten there you will not be sorry. The food is delicious, huge portions and quick. There is always a line (first come first serve/not list).
I never write reviews, but this place rules!!!! The hash-browns must be dipped in butter, so delicious!
This place isn't for the light eater, veggie (thought they do make a veggie omelette), vegan or picky (diet) eater.
If you want a small portion, order a l carte. But, really whatever you do enjoy!
Portland's Best, Easy. If you're searching for the best-kept secret in Portland, look no further than Gateway Breakfast House. Sure, it's a greasy spoon. Yes, you get the feeling the building could collapse on top of you at any time. And I admit, the decor looks like the it came off the discount racks at a thrift store. But once your plate arrives you'll forget all of that. The portions were so large that I ate all I could and had trouble fitting the remainder into a to-go box. I'm very particular about the way my eggs are cooked, and when I requested them "lightly basted, if possible," my server laughed and told me "nothing's impossible with our cooks." They were perfect! A sign on the wall declares "Tasty food and tasteless conversation served daily," and half the fun of my experience there was to listen to the familiar banter between the waitresses and their regulars. This is a terrific, friendly place that anyone with an appetite and a personality would be foolish not to try. If you're heading there on the weekend, get there early. The word is getting out about this place. See you there.
Pretty Good. The food here is actually pretty good. Better than your average diner (such as Denny?s or Elmer?s). However, the service was slow. When there is a line they pretty much ignore you until there is an available table and they go on the honor system instead of taking down a list. Though despite the food being pretty good (not great), I noticed a minimum of 4 health code violations while I dined here. If you don't care that much about that sort of thing I would recommend it. However I won't dine here again because I prefer to dine in cleaner establishments. If Oregon required restaurants to post what they received on their health inspections, like California does, I suspect this place would be a little less busy...
the greatway breakfast house. i really enjoy coming here because its good food cheap and you get a huge portion. yes maybe the service is a little slow but its still worth the wait.
Excellent. Best breakfast in Portland. A great greasy spoon. I can eat a lot and I have to take half of it home.
