Portland >Alpine Coin Co
knowledgeable. The owner seems to know a lot about the coins, this is a place for a collector, not so much for an investor. Not so much selection in the bullion. If you appreciate the fine beauty of a well crafted coin or the colorful heritage coins have, you should check this place out.
40+Years In Business - There is a reason!. I completely DISAGREE with pdxtennisnut! I have done business with the owner for over 40 years, and have never seen him be rude or standoffish to a customer. He is extremely polite, professional, and easy to deal with. Since the 1960's, I have watched him buy hundreds of coin collections / accumulations , and have never seen him pay less than a fair price, or take advantage of anyone. Think about it - a business won't survive for 40 years unless their customers are treated honestly and with respect. Yeah, I guess that is "old school" - but I wouldn't have it any other way. Bottom line - If you are buying or selling coins - and want to be sure that you will be treated fairly - this is the place!
Fair but not especially friendly.
This is a nice shop with lots of light and good display cases. Very "old school", they don't take credit cards and even use crank handle adding machines to total up your purchase.
I brought in part of a collection I am selling to get a quote and they were within a few dollars of other shops on a total of several thousand dollars, so they weren't taking advantage of me.
However, I found the owner to be standoffish and rude.
I sold my collection at another shop that I found more user friendly: The Coin Cottage in Multnomah Village.
