Tips for China Delight

January 23, 2013

Be Delighted Too....... I have dined in most of the Asian restaurants in Portland, and I would have to say this is one of, if not the best, I have tried. The dishes are always made to order and consistently prepared (no msg here). The Owner (Bruce) and the staff from day one, make you feel very welcome(kinda like family), with a warm greeting at the door.

The restaurant (and restrooms) are always very clean. Do yourself a favor and ask about the daily specials. I have never been disappointed with the recommendations. You can have your routine "Combo Dinner #1" if so desired......or ask Bruce, he's not shy, he will expand your culinary horizons all the way across the Pacific Ocean, if you allow him. He has an impressive resume of training under World Class Chefs as well as cooking for dignitaries. ( a "special" menu for the adventurous is available upon request) As always, quality ingredients are key to obtain sensational dishes, and China Delight assures you of this fact.

China Delight offers an excellent variety of Sky, Land & Sea representations. I HAVE to begin with (my favorite) Savory Asian Pan Seared Meat Dumplings.. aka potstickers, served with a unique dipping sauce, and crispy (as you request) on the bottom, tender and delicious on the inside with a wonderful mixture of ingredients. The savoy and the sweet are displayed in the delicate sauces served with each dish ordered, and instrumental to the overall success of that dish. Wonderful Wok dishes adorn the vast menu. Steaming spicy soups to warm your insides. You like it spicy...... Bruce is your man, just ask!!! The fare at China Delight has that....."that little something extra," that the abundance of other Asian restaurants in Portland don't.

I think besides the quality ingredients used to prepare the," made to order dishes"..... the LOVE factor is a huge component in their overall success.

Give the China Delight and Bruce (Mr.Gregarious of SW Portland) a try.

I believe..... You Too, will "Be Delighted."

I've been here quite a few times, mostly in the small bar on the back of the building. The regulars consist of senior citizens but I always return for the drinks, the lottery and the excellent service by the lovely bar goddess, Tina. I was disappointed to come in on one of her regular shifts and find that she no longer works at that particular time. :-( guess I will have to find somewhere new to hang out on Tuesday mornings as the bartender that works it now took 20 minutes just to greet me and ask if I wanted a drink. So sad. So, I must deduct a star. Check out the bar when you get a chance, ask for Tina! If she isn't there find out when you can return to find her there. Food is very tasty! Drinks are wonderful!

Excellent, affordable food and personable service. The servers are friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed and versatile enough to accommodate both families and more formal gatherings. The food is wonderful. I highly recommend any of the delicate yet flavorful "clay-pot" dishes. The owner is always ready with recommendations and conversation; it's nice to find a traditional host in a world from which they are quickly disappearing in favor of fast food and faster service. Don't worry--you won't have to wait long for your food to appear, but you'll have the time to enjoy the meal and your company.

still Portland's best Chinese food. This is still the best Chinese food in the Portland metro area. Try the whole flounder, enough for 2-4 people, depending on what else you have. If you're unsure of what to order, just tell the owner how many dishes you want and generally what sorts of things and let him surprise you. You won't be disappointed. As for the one negative review here, there's no explanation except that the reviewer must have been expressing her personal taste. For the rest of us, the food at China Delight can't be beat for quality or price.

Best chinese in Raleigh Hills. Not sure what the one reviewer is talking about - as for inexpensive Chinese food, this is one of the best places in all of Portland. Honey walnut chicken is very good as well as the Mandarin Chicken and Kung Pao. We eat here several times a month, and rarely go anywhere else as its always good.

Nearly inedible. After reading the glowing reviews I decided to try it. I began to eat my lunch and wondered if I was in the right restaurant. I ordered the honey walnut chicken. The chicken was overly breaded and deep-fried to a rock-like consistency; and was in a glowing yellow sauce that was less honey and more French's mustard. The accompanying rice tasted like the grill-- no flavor, just greasy. My friend's lunch was slightly better (Cashew chicken) but no real flavor and sketchy cuts of chicken. At the end of the meal, the owner(?) asked if I wanted a box since I had my entire entree left. I said I didn't care for it and it wasn't what I expected (i.e., an edible lunch). He was pretty condescending about that and never offered to bring something else or in any way compensate me. Needless to say I won't be back.
