Beware, this place is a social scammer!
All positive reviews are done by the owner and his friends. I dare you to test this theory out. I did. I live in the Bethany area and I finally decided to try the place after 4 years here because the reviews were so great.
Now I realize after the horrible experience that there was a reason why there are 5 stars and 1 star ratings mostly. Notice there are very few partial ratings and I bet those are real people trying to be nice. The rest are the owners and people like me who got ripped off by the overpriced soggy food.
If you take the challenge please post up your experience so that others will not be deceived by these fake ratings.
ugh horrible. I hadnt been here for over 10 years. but live super close and love greek food. I took my two kids with me to try it out. The cashier really seemed impatient even though we were the only one there. it was very over priced. the hummus and pita had a small cup of hummus with cut up pita for 4.95. the falafel sandwich had no real flavor except for the falafel was really salty. the greek fries I think had been sitting there all day. with tons of salt on them. I love spices and flavor but thought they tried to add salt instead. I would not recommnend this place but would recomment HUSH HUSH at the beaverton fred meyers. they are the best greek food in the area....
Friendly place with good food. Could use a facelift..
PROS:
*Amazing Greek food
*Friendly
*Comfortable
CONS:
Needs a remodel or a new place altogether. Has a run-down feeling.
OPA!!!.
This place is what a deli is all about! They have live music most every weekend and wine tastings in the summer time. I follow them on Facebook so I always know who is playing and about their giveaways/contests etc…
Props to the "mom and pop" shop. we just don't have enough of these types of places these days. Do you want to eat your food at a processed plant like 'Gyro-Gyro' or 'Daphnes' in a mall or at a place that is actually Greek owned and operated? This palce has tradition and has been in the area with its recipes for a long time passed on from generation to generation. Its hard to survive in the restaurant business and with the way this place does its food its easy to see why they have survived the best and worst of times.
When you go here you will see the same faces and they will remember you. I haven't grown up at this deli but have been going the last 6-7 years. I find myself craving the Greek Fries and their unique texture and flavor. The people that complain about this place need to remember that they are going into a "DELI"... A DELI FOLKS. Relax, slow down and enjoy life for a few minutes, chill out and enjoy the food. If you dont like it leave it to the people that actually enjoy good old fashioned GREEK food and spend your time at Elephants counting your money and starring at your Mercedes. If it seems spendy (which I disagree with) its because it isnt a bunch of crap and its made from scratch.
The best way to sum it up is that its a Deli with a great wine bar in the back with a great wine selection with great Greek food.
Do: try the Mad Chicken and the Greek Fries... (everything else is good but everyone has a favorite)
Do: Make sure to go to the back and check out the walk in beer cooler and the new wine bar.
Do: Introduce yourself to the owner (pondo) who is really nice.
Dont: Call the greek fries Jo-Jo's.
Not very clean.
This place is a dive. The food decent, but the place is in need of some serious cleaning and renovation. Every surface was coated with something yucky, and it just looks generally run down. I looked into the kitchen and the surfaces that they work on were filthy. The restroom smelled like urine, and had a piles of dirty paper towels in the corner.
The new wine bar looked fine, but it looks like they really don't care about the rest of the place.
Re: Get Serious- Mad Greek Deli is Fantastic!.
Truthbearer- Obviously you haven't spent much time at the Mad Greek Deli because if you had you would know it's one of those rare gems all foodies want! The authentic Mediterranean fare ranges from classic to gourmet. If it?s delicious sandwiches and fries you crave try the Mt. Olympus and Greek fries there?s nothing like this anywhere in Portland! If you want a fancier meal, try the spicy shrimp or the Souvlaki plate which are out of this world! My point is that there is nowhere in PDX that has this combination of food, drinks and entertainment (live music on the weekend).
Truthbearer- I am a regular customer at the Mad Greek Deli. I challenge you to come back on a weekend night, sit in the wine bar and try the Mad Greek Deli again. You WON?T be disappointed!
p.s. I don?t frequently judge a restaurant on their website and their logo-I judge them on their food, drink, atmosphere and service. For that the Mad Greek Deli is 5 stars!!!!
Nice Facelift. Been going here for several years and been watching the transformation. It has come a long way from when I started going there 15 years ago. The food is always consistant and their always friendly. The live music is an added bonus during the weekend and the new wine bar could be a little bigger and brighter but it's a nice getaway.
Mad Greek Deli- BEST Greek in PDX. Mad Greek Deli is the best greek food in pdx!! Not only is the food great but they have live music Friday and Saturday nights. I go every weekend and I always find something new and delicious to eat and drink. They expanded and built a wine bar and the selection is very impressive. It's nice after work to drop by, sit in the wine bar with friends. No matter where you live in PDX it's worth the drive to go to the Mad Greek Deli and eat great food in a relaxed atmophere!
Good Greek Food To Go. The restaurant is an fun, old, rehabilitated grocery store, and is run by a sometimes surly, but often not, Greek guy. The food is good, though, and plentiful. The original Mad Greek sandwich is great, and gyros are tasty, too. A nice place to get quick and good Greek food, and the setting is uniquely charming.
CChen. I've been going to this deli for 20 years and its the best. The Mad Greek and the Yorgo burger are over the top. Helvetia Tavern has nothing on the Mad Greek. A nice neighborhood deli.
