If for some unfortunate reason, you have to enter the Lloyd Center Mall labyrinth, it's good to stop in at this busy bakery beforehand for a little pickmeup, or a big one, in the case of the cinnamon rolls/Monkey muffins. Whether or not it's St. Paddy's day, pick up some delicious soda bread, too.
Still, their bread and other products are delicious, but this location tends to be a bit rough around the edges. As a cafe, it's only okay, but the real reason to come back is their fabulous bread.
Thanks for the allergic reaction. I have heard about this place for years, but I just went there today and left disappointed. We ordered two sandwiches and they initially only gave us one. I reminded them about the second one, and they served it up fairly quickly, but it was clear that they still weren't reading our order ticket. They added heaps of the one ingredient I asked them NOT to include in my original order, and, even though I removed it from my food, I still walked out of that place with an allergic reaction. Even if it hadn't been for that, the sandwiches were wimpy and the bread was so-so. We spent $18, had to tip up front, and bus our own table. I'm not going back, and it's too bad, because I was looking forward to enjoying this place.
great lunch spot. Get there before noon if you don't want to wait in a long line. Their soups are the best -- and no waiting! I recommend getting a bowl of the daily soups (2 are offered, one is veggie), and a side salad. Ask for the soup first. All for $5.50! A great deal. Some of their servers have a bit of an attitude, but they are basically nice if you know what you want to order.
desserts. this is a great place to buy dessert to go! chocolate cookies are yummy!
Three cheery cafes bake their way into Portlander's hearts..
In Short
If it's not the fresh-baked rustic breads, sinful sweets it's the satisfying sandwiches that draw savvy diners to all three Grand Central's bakery cafes. When you want food fast without the grease, call ahead and order a sack lunch: a sandwich (try the Black Forest ham and baby Swiss) with gourmet potato chips and a giant cookie. It's a carbohydrate-lover's dream.
Yummy Sandwiches, A Bit Overpriced. I love their sandwiches, but I will only treat myself to them every once in awhile because you can end up spending more than you might expect just for a sandwich and chips. I reccommend the egg salad sandwich on olive bread in a sack lunch though. Staff is super friendly and it has a nice, busy "meet your friends around the corner" feeling.
