good food.
great jukebox, free shuffleboard, cute girls pouring drinks.
didn't expect the food to be so good, biscuits and gravy were great
I love it. I have been to the Hut way too many times, and for some sick reason I still love it... Ok, it's not really sick. It's just that the place is like "Cheers" to me. I feel safe there (as a reasonably attractive woman, I can't say this about every dive bar), the bartenders know me, know my drink, know my friends and my foes, and watch out for me. I really think it's them that make this place. Cheap drinks and a good location (Voodoo Doughnuts at 2:30 anyone?) don't hurt either, and honestly I could do with fewer decibels from the juke box, but in the end it's the crew that makes it worth the hangover for me to keep coming back.
Plug Your Nose!.
I just moved into the neighborhood so i thought i would give this local bar a chance.
WOW ! What was I thinking!! As soon as my Friend and I walked in we noticed this un-mistaken stench. It was this guy in his 30's sitting at the end of the bar and hanging off his chair with his pants soaked in the front and dark in the back .(if you know what i mean) He still was drinking up a storm and wasn't looking so good. So I started looking around for the staff and was hoping that they were getting a cab for him or something but of course not... Typical Dive! trying to talk for her tips at the other end of the bar just ignoring my friend and I so we left!
PLUS the drunk health hazard at the bar that you could tell had been there for awhile. YUCK!
I understand it's a bar, but you don't have to over serve people to get a tip !
Since then i have heard a lot of stories about seeing wasted people in there.
The Smokey Hut. I kinda like this place for it's cheap beer, shuffleboard and dirty atmosphere. The food is typical bar food and how can one go wrong with fried goodness at 11:00 pm? The place seems pretty relaxed although it gets super smokey... maybe a good ventilation system would help?
Whatever.
used to be cool, but no longer. I heard an ex-cop bought the joint. Bad drink pours, bad service, bad food, bad atmosphere...
try the 'Standard' - 22d and burnside
started off great....
Met some buddies for a couple of drinks.. Really nice barstaff. Tall blonde (forgot here name) and smaller dark haired (angela?) lady brought us good drinks were really nice. Tab was like 60 bucks , we tipped a third.. everything was great..
We waited outside for a couple of friends to meet up and are jumped by a buchca metalheads (all regulars) and it gets dumb. Like 7 of them and 3 of us , and I am in a full arm cast. This is not sandy huts fault, but....
The smaller bartender comes out and tries to break everything up and is yelling mostly at us. Wants us to take off and though she is sure the others started it, or is placating us, w/e. She wants us to get out of there? But if we tried to get our stuff off the ground the idiots try to come after us again..
Finally as we are getting in my buddies truck I see here hugging the main guy (lotso hair black jacket) and his girlfriend (short darker skinned long black and blond dreads). She then leads them inside for drinks/victory party or who knows.
I used to come to the sandy hut back in the day and it was great..
what a waste.... Could be a cool bar. Expensive drinks, dirty kitchen, arrogant servers. Extremely violent at night. Not a dive, just a pit.
The next best thing to taking a little vacation in the islands..
In Short
One wall is covered by a caricature-styel mural filled with famous faces such as Harpo and Groucho Marx, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra and many others. Hipsters and working folks come here for reasonably priced drinks and better-than-average bar food. Most of the menu is made up of breakfasts (served any time), sandwiches, burgers and a few complete dinners. An oyster dinner comes with salad, cheese bread and fries.
Atmosphere & Booze. Great drinks, good diverse tunes playing from the jukebox, and shuffleboard.
