Editorial Review for The Mountain Shop – by Otis Rubottom

In Short
In business since 1936, the Mountain Shop is one of Portland's oldest outdoor outfitters. The store consists of three floors of gear, ranging from a bargain basement filled with closeouts and demo equipment for sale, to a wide selection of outerwear, packs, mountaineering equipment, sunglasses and footwear. There's also a full ski and snowboard pro shop. Customers will find all the major brands represented, as well as smaller brands.

The Extras

One thing that sets the Mountain Shop apart is its staff--extremely knowledgeable across the board, but especially in footwear fitting. They make boot shopping--whether for hiking, skiing or snowboarding--a pleasure.

I have rented downhill skis from The Mountain Shop twice on a Saturday in the last two months, and both times have been completely ignored by staff in the (understaffed) rental shop and then--after waiting 5-10 minutes--the staff has been rude and unhelpful. Upstairs, checking out at the front desk, was no better. When we returned the skis on Monday, the staff was similarly unhelpful. Staff acts continually put upon by anyone needing service. This shop already has a terrible reputation among people I know in Portland, and my recent experiences there have only added to it. I'm not going back.

Clearly the most knowleadge staff in town in regards to skiing equipment. They did an excellent job refitting my boots and were patient with spending a lot of time with me working on the best fit. When we realized that we had done everything we could, and that the sizing was wrong, they took back the boots after a year of hard use, and gave me a great deal on in store credit. They may cost a bit more, but their knowleadge and ability to stand by their product are more than worth it!
