Movement Center for superb yoga instruction

by Alameda972

I had a great instructor for several years but he closed his studio, and I found The Movement Center about five years ago. The setting is exceptionally tranquil and lends itself to genuine yoga practice. The instructors offer considerable variety in emphasis and approach, but all are thoroughly qualified and highly skilled. Classes are small and instruction focuses on enhancing each individual's practice according to each one's capacities. The schedule offers various times of day and days of the week, and styles from gentle to strenuous. In addition to regular weekly classes, there are many special two and three day intensive workshops available from time to time, featuring notable master teachers and sometimes physician instructors. Prices are reasonable and consideration is given seniors. Street parking is readily available, and there are bike racks inside the grounds of the old Laurelhurst Manor with its gardens. A marked contrast with typical "gym" settings. Be sure to check their website: mcyoga (dot) com.

  • Pros: Ambience, instruction quality, variety of options
  • Cons: none

If you're looking for a Zen experience, this is it!

by poohlah

I was spoiled by taking Yoga for the first time at the Movement Center ten years ago, because everywhere else I practiced just didn't compare! The ashram is a beautiful and peaceful setting , which promotes inner stillness and the unique blend of hatha yoga that is offered accommodates everyone at every level. The focus is on the breath with the movement. Although you will practice asanas both statically and dynamically, the synchronization of the breath with movement allows for a deep connection with your body. You will leave class feeling relaxed and at peace yet with your awareness heightened. The staff is wonderful and warm....and you will find a teacher that will inspire you and suit your particular needs. There are a wide variety of classes as well as workshops and retreats. If this is your first experience with yoga or not, I highly recommend the Movement Center at the Nityananda Institute!

  • Pros: ambience, type of yoga, teachers, class offerings
  • Cons: none that I can think of!

Excellent selection of classes, teachers knowledgeable.

The Movement Center is a wonderful place to take yoga classes at any level. Even while learning the basics one comes away with a feeling of having made some positive changes, even if small. There is a wide variety of teachers, each of which adds a unique approach, while the poses covered overall are consistent. Classes are available for more advanced students as well.
