I don't really eat a lot of Thai food and I usually stick to the dishes I like. Pa Nang is my all time favorite. When I discovered Chaba Thai I was extremely delighted but the half hour drive was a bit much for every week. Also I noticed that lately the Pa Nang wasn't as good as I first remembered. So I decided to try out something closer and came upon Arawan. Yeah thats not the correct address so I would google before I go. The place is actually pretty looking given the limited space. Its always bustling everytime I go. The Pa Nang actually turned out to be better than Chaba's. All the other stuff I've tried (sorry don't know names) wasn't bad. One of the garlic chicken dishes was actually bland but other than that I've always enjoyed my food here. And it doesn't burn a hole in your pocked. The staff is pretty nice as well. The hotness of the food depends on the chef you get. I've found out that a "4" is actually hotter than a "5". Maybe its because they think you can't handle a 5 and turn it down but if you like your food spicy, then emphatically stress on that because they will take you lightly.
Pros: Food
Cons: Nothing I can think of

First, the address and phone number listed is incorrect. Arawan is really located at 9610 SE 82nd Ave Portland, OR 97266-6721 Tel. (503) 788-3066. Now, as to the food... I had mentioned Arawan to a friend last year who said the food was horrible and to not waste my money. This is a guy who I trust so I never bothered to check them out. My wife and I really like spicy food and were in the need for something tasty. It was a Friday night, we were both tired, hungry, and not in the mood to drive far from home. Arawan and Thai House on Sunnyside road are the closest. We have tried Thai House and they are pretty good. The review by debutante8 smelled like an employee or owner as it was a little too glowing and given my friends opinion we decided to find out for ourselves if Arawan was any good or not. It was around 5:30 on a Friday night and they were packed. The staff were friendly and service was fast. The food was terrible though. We have a few benchmark items we like to order when trying new places to eat. For Thai food it is Po Pia Sot (Salad Rolls), Tom Kha Gai soup, and Mussaman Curry. We also ordered the Pad Num Prig Pow. The latter two were ordered medium spicy. Things arrived quickly and were steaming hot. The Salad Rolls were very bland and not even the slightest hint of mint that we so like about them. The soup was syrup like sweet with no trace of lime. I ended up chewing on a chunk of lemon grass for some flavor. The Pad Num Prig Pow had small red flakes that look like ground red chili but it too was VERY sweet. We ended up pouring chili sauce on it to get rid of the sicky sweet flavor. The Mussaman we took to go for the next days lunch. It too was overly sweet. We have had these same dishes in many Thai restaurants around town and never had them so overly sweet. Too bad. Other than the food it is a nice place! Overall we have to give Arawan two thumbs down.
