Great outdoor fun
by PhotoMom
Huge outdoor play area will keep the kids happy for hours. Weve even had birthday parties here, and everybody loved it! Just go early to reserve one of the few tables before your party! Sooo much fun!
- Pros: Play structures, value, location is beautiful
- Cons: Tables and parking go quickly, but still isnt a problem
From the Rose Test Garden to the scenic views and acres of lush grounds, it's the pinnacle of the city.

In Short
This multitiered, beautifully landscaped park in Portland's West Hills draws locals and tourists alike. Visitors come for International Rose Test Gardens' rows of meticulously manicured blooms. Another crowd pleaser is the view to the east, which frames Mount Hood perfectly between forest, hills and river. The Japanese Gardens, Hoyt Arboretum, World Forestry Center, Children's Museum, Oregon Zoo and Vietnam War Memorial are all located within the park.
Lots to do and see for the whole family

Washington Park is very family friendly. There something to do for everyone. Plan a whole day by starting at the zoo, then taking the train into the park to have a picinic lunch, then walking through the rose garden.
- Pros: Lots of variety
- Cons: none really
THE ESSENCE OF THE CITY OF ROSES
by portland_mike7456
Wow! It is so wonderful at Washington Park. I can only comment on the International Rose Test Garden because that is the only area we visited. It is very well maintained and the view is great! You can see all of downtown and Mt. Hood in the background. Please make extra time for parking and don't be afraid to hike a bit to wherever your destination may be. The amphitheater is a fun place to sit and people watch.
- Pros: Free!, Beautiful view, Well-maintained
- Cons: , Not enough parking
The Finest Rose in the Rose City Bouquet
by Mohawk52
Washington Park is part of one of the largest inner city park systems in the country. Accessible by bus and light rail it encompasses the city's marvelous zoo, Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), the Japanese and Rose Gardens and a unique minature railroad which provides inner park movement between major divisions. The entire Skyine park system looks out upon the city and its rivers to the grand vistas of the Cascase Mountains to the East with spectacular views of Mt. Hood. One day will not be enough.
- Pros: train, gardens, omsi & zoo
- Cons: n/a
Why it's called City of Roses
by Debbie2002
You can get the greatest shaved ice and smell roses in the famous Rose Garden while taking in a breath-taking view of the city. It's romantic and playful. You can meditate or catch a show (on the stage). You can walk your dog, jog, play frisbee or just relax in the sun. The Japanese Gardens are heavenly and the Zoo is just up the way. It's my favorite place to go after a long day of work.
- Pros: Parking, Food Available, Views
- Cons: None

The coolest park in the city
by phijef
Not only is it the coolest park temperature wise, but it is also the coolest in the hip factor. I go there to enjoy nice long walks and to see the city views. I also enjoy walking around and seeing the multi-million dollar dream homes. What better place is there?
- Pros: Sheer Beauty, Difersified patronage, No Big Toys
- Cons: No sports facilities, restrooms, transients
Watching a ton
by ddeveny
Best part about the WP is the view. The second best is amount of variety that this park has to offer. I go running there quite a bit and love being in the beauty with so much to look at. There's the rose gardens, the cityscape the dramatic view of Mt. Hood, the people watching -- it's really incredible just how much this place has to offer. I took a date up there one spring evening and these weird old guys were dancing around and slapping wooden dowels together while singing some song. Tell me that's not better than watching a movie!
- Pros: View, People watching
Great park
by shaft28
There is so much to do in Washington park, it is hard where to start.
We love to hike, the Rose Garden, the Japanese & Chinese gardens, and plan to go to the museums and play tennis there.
The Zoo is great and easy to get to as well.
I find everything reasonable priced and you could easily spend an entire weekend up there.
Just wish it was right in the middle of town, it would be perfect.
The views are great, fantastic place to take guests or a date.
- Pros: Rose Test Garden
- Cons: bathrooms
