Simply the best- try the breakfast sandwiches!

Jim and Patty's is a staple in my life based on the habanero mocha alone. I love the combo of spicy and sweet; add coffee to the mix and you're in heaven. And if you're not into hot pepper, they have numerous other delicious coffee drinks. No one I have taken there has ever had a disappointing drink- and I've taken quite a few people! Unlike a previous reviewer, I have never received poor service here. Everyone has been fun and friendly. True, it may be slightly slower and more crowded than a Starbucks, and the reason is simply the high quality.

I have only recently discovered the breakfast sandwiches here, and they are amazing. Made on a hot, fresh biscuit, I always get the bacon/egg/cheese with a tomato. Some days that's just the only thing that will satisfy me. With that and my habanero mocha, this is my ideal place for a Portland rainy morning.

Bad investment and bad service/ overpriced drinks

First of all, I had reservations about going to the new coffee shop after Jim and Patty bilked their investors by cashing out on Coffee People and watching it tank. Secondly, I stood in line with two of my children for at least 10 minutes at a register that was apparently not in use. Patty walked by and did not say a thing, other than chat with her employee. After several minutes of standing and getting no attention, I finally asked the man in front of me making espresso if I was standing in the wrong line (which he could have easily told me 10 minutes prior). He said "uh, yeah.. the line is over there...". We had to walk to the end of the line that had 6 people by now... all of whom were behind us when we arrived. I finally just took my children and left. Obviously investing AND customer service are not their strong points. I would suggest the Turkish coffee place next door, or even... God forbid, Starbucks.

• Pros: average coffee drinks
• Cons: overpriced, bad service, and bad karma from owners who sold out their investors.

The old favorite is still here.

The atmosphere was very relaxed and pleasant, the staff friendly and prompt, and the coffee, as always, delicious. Their attractive display of baked goods all looked appetizing. Like the reviewer before me, I can also recommend the sausage biscuit, which made a satisfying breakfast treat along with my cream-topped mocha.

My main reason for posting a review, however, is to update the store hours: They ARE open on Sundays, from 8 - 4 p.m.

Thee best in a city that offers many

Ditto on those awesome sausage biscuits, they seem to have slightly difference taste (for the better.) The regular pastry offerings are excellent, but I like it when Jim gets creative. I've tried a few yummy concoctions that seem to make their appearance only on rare ocassion. The coffees and mochas are so much better when you enjoy them there; the ceramic cups with ample whipped cream makes the difference over the cardboard cups. The recently added pizza is very good, but maybe add an interesting topping or two.

I go there quite often, but don't remember a cold drink menu. If there isn't one, then there should be. If there is, then my bad.

I can respect the decision to observe the Sabbath, but a coffee house that's closed on Sundays in a cute stroll-type neighborhood just seems odd. I hope they consider opening seven days a week; just hire a few Seventh Day Adventists for that day. The owners and staff are just so nice that you really want them to succeed.

Jim & Patty Robert ARE Portland Coffee

Our hearts were broken when Coffee People were sold and Diederich Coffee bowdlerized it. Jim and Patty rocked and ruled the bean in this town, and in Portland, coffee to us meant Coffee People, and they were everywhere. I remember good coffee, no backtalk, and heavenly oat cakes.

We were thrilled to find out that they had a new coffee place. The coffee is just the way we remember; the pastries are just as good, the attitude just as hip. They even have old Coffee People decor!

There is nothing at all wrong with the product and the coffee and the service. They just need to be open a bit later. We're night owls from necessity, and we just can't get over there as often as we'd like. I hope they expand hours soon and open another shop or two somewhere else in town.

• Pros: Everything-coffee excellent, service is friendly, pastries are divine
• Cons: Not open late enough, only one location!

Best of the Best

Stumptown coffee brewed by french press, amazing baked goods made on premises, funny & cocky baristas...all make J&P's my favorite coffee shop in Portland. I love sitting at the dining table and sharing space with other customers. When I'm more reclusive, it's time to sit on one of the plush leather couches.

The coffeecake is all it claims to be and more...my favorite, "my beautiful cherry."

The Happiest Place on Earth

Nice folks serve you, yummy coffee cake greets you and fantastic coffee pours into your tummy.....is this heaven????

Princes cake......a reason to go IN and OF itself.

The staff...amazing, funny, light hearted and wickedly quick on the humor draw....I like that in my coffee joint.

In Short
Neighborhood cafes come and go, but Jim and Patty Roberts have been staples of the Portland coffee scene for years. They started (then sold) the Coffee People chain, and now run this down-to-earth shop along walkable NE Fremont Street. Aside from expertly made lattes, customers swoon for the Umpqua ice cream and homemade sour cream coffeecake, free Wi-Fi access and the "Caffeine Meditation Garden" out back.

Compare to other Fremont places

Jim & Patty's offers amazing hot sausage biscuits for $1.95. Their other baked goods are fabulous. The owners and staff care about the business and customers; it's a very warm, homey atmosphere. Parisi's offers a cold metalic feeling, but offers ice cream (excuse me, Gelato) perfect for those cold Portland days. Javaman is next to the wonderful bakery, but it's owner seems to care less and will crack a smile every odd month. Then there's Starbucks...

Back and Better

I finally made the pilgrimage (for me) to Jim and Patty's. I was a regular at Coffee People until they sold it and the new owners cleaned up the bulletin boards and streamlined (apparently) the coffee buying/roasting process. I wasn't disappointed, they had Stumptown Nicaraguan the day I went in, so I had a double americano; simply the best coffee I've had in years. The coffeecake was close to perfection. It's a 20 mile trip I'll be making at least weekly from now on.
