Really Rude!
by MaryWhitehouse
March 01, 2009
I have been coming here regularly since I started working two doors down and I think the store is cute and the product is wonderful and the staff has been really friendly up until now.
I work at a neighboring business as a manager. I would NEVER allow any member of my staff to treat someone the way I was just treated.
It is Sunday, March 1st 2009 @ 11:30AM. I would be very concerned if the woman working the counter this morning was an owner or a manager. I will never go back in there.
I went in for just a can of coke because I was at my shop organizing the back room of my store on my day off, (and feeling pretty good about it), and I got thirsty for a coke. I was chipper when I went in. A song from the Xanadu sound track was playing which made me happy and I mentioned it, she was indifferent and ask me something. I didn't quite catch what she said but I repeated "Oh, just a can of diet coke." She rolled her eyes at me brought me the coke, I was confused. 'Was I just rude to her?' I thought to myself. I handed her 2 bucks. She said "It's just a dollar." and let the other one drop on the counter. I said "oh I know the other one is for you." I started towards the door and she rolled her eyes and mumbled "why didn't you put it in there and motioned towards the tip jar. I was amazed. I just said. "wow" and walked out. I am sorry for whatever happened to make her so miserable that she had to treat me that way.
I was an easy, tipping, regular customer just supporting a neighboring local business. Sorry to be so dispicable.
I think everyone should go there actually and buy a can of coke and give two dollars, because apparently it upsets her, so that would be my justice for the way she made me feel.
Prior reviewer obviously has a personal bone to pick....

I've only been to this store once, and have a fairly neutral opinion, but I am very disturbed by the prior reviewer's tone and stance...sounds more like a disgruntled former employee than a fair review (and violates this site's standards!! (Start your own store and see how difficult it is!)

This place is great and it is nice place to stop by with the kids after school, they love it and it is healthier than ice cream. They have all sorts of flavors and it is great!
Jessica Holiday Rocks

As a former employee of staccato... i can def say that the quality definatly depends on who made the gelato.. I too have tried the other gelato shops in town and found myself inlove with them more so than staccato.. if only Sarah Holiday would give COMPLETE control to her sister, jessica.. staccato would thrive im sure.. Sarah has a complete lack of managment skills leaves employees frustrated and mad, which customers witness as disapointments.. Sarah might have gone to ice cream school.. but she sure didnt go to business management school... staccato would be alot better off with out her and her nasty attitude.. So if you get a bad scoop be sure it was probably her that made it.. she just has no ambition left it seems.. Anything Jessica or Steve make is absolutly amazing.. They are gelato superstars.. And dont forget the super friendly and helpful counter folk.. All and all.. Staccato only lacks because of Sarah Holiday.. Get rid of her and I think its the greatest place in pdx to kick back with pals or family and have a cup o gelato!!
- Pros: Awesome place to kick back..
- Cons: Sarah Holiday is taking the intire business down with her lack of management skills..

Staccato Gelato is a fun, neighborhood gelato place. The staff is super friendly, and the gelato is fantastic. They have both traditional and interesting new flavors (like cardamon orange or lavender infused). They change their flavors often, so there's always something new to try. Their homemade donuts are also fantastic.
Good stuff!

Amazing use of fresh local ingredients, and very interesting flavors you won't find in most gelato places. I definitly recommend trying Staccato.
- Pros: Creative flavors, new flavors often
- Cons: Donuts are only on weekends... and I'm addictied!

The gelatto is great. I prefer it to Mio and their doughnuts are the best cake doughnuts I have ever had.

- Cons: None
Not so great

I went to school around the corner from Staccato. It was the first place that I tried Gelato, so I liked it. But once I tried Mio, I realized the difference in quality. Mio Gelato obviously takes their time to perfect their gelato, and though they may not have "cool indie paintings" on their walls, they put their effort into the quality and appearance of their product. Staccato doesn't seem to understand the concept of consistance. Also they provide too few choices.
Good but not Best

It's appropriate that Staccato was the first gelateria in Portland: no place has more Portland character. The funky, bright room with squiggly lines and multi-colored dots matches the fun and interesting flavors of gelato on offer. The only problem is that it's the least consistent on quality in this survey.
Like I said: interesting flavors. Their honey-lavender has been a favorite since I first started going there. They always have basics like chocolate, hazelnut, and pistachio. But the reason I return is for treats like ginger-peach, cinnamon, or prickly pear. Their Mayan chocolate has a nice back of the throat bite with plenty of deep chocolate flavor.
From the beginning, their main problem has been with iciness. In a cup of three flavors, you were almost guaranteed two of them would have chunks of crunchy water crystals. On my last two visits, they seem to have reduced this problem, but the gumminess of the gelatos has been increased. Are they using stabilizers or increasing butterfat to get rid of the iciness problem and creating a new textural problem? Is it just the serving temperature and it was too stiff to notice before? Not sure. They import their bases, while making their own flavorings. But either way, I've never been satisfied with the texture of Staccato's gelato.
But the gelato is generally acceptable, and a couple flavors will be terrific, especially factoring in bonus points for creativity. The sorbettos, however, are generally terrible, the worst I've had. (And they make these entirely from scratch.) On multiple occasions with multiple flavors, I've had sorbettos at Staccato that tasted like little more than sugary gelatin. The most striking was last summer when I had a blackberry sorbetto in the height of blackberry season that was an insipid, gooey mess. Among their sorbettos, their lemon is consistently the best, much more tart than sugary.
- Pros: fun interior
- Cons: gelato consistancy
