I had so much fun and was extremely satisfied when I went to see Tracy at SPANK hair studio. If you have dreads and you want a break from trying to weave in all those lazy flyaway strands, Tracy's your girl! She uses a crochet, not a bunch of product. She had dreads for 6 years so she'll give you tips and just chit-chat with you. And her price is outstandingly du-able- it is by far the most inexpensive well-priced service for cleaning up locks that I have seen yet- (and I did my research before making the appt.) She actually takes into account that you will be sitting in her chair for a couple hours, so she makes herself fun and easy to hang with, while having a price that doesn't make you sweat each time the hour passes. So if you want dreads or if you want to clean them up - Please go see TRACY at SPANK she rocks- you won't find a better deal in town!

Pros: well priced, relaxing, a non-smelly salon, nice staff

Cons: not a lot of people know about Tracy and her dreadlock abilities

after months of soul searching, and with the support of my husband, i decided to get dreadlocks. i called 5 different hair salons to find some one who knew how to do dreadlocks. then i called spank. tracy answered the phone right off the bat and was very friendly sounding. and when i asked about dreads she said that she was the one that did them. we talked about the dreads and i got some realy good info on the prossess and creation of dreads. i set up an appointment for the next 2 days. the first day is a 3hr apointment, then next till it was done. well its after day one and i can tell you that its going to look awsome, tracy deffently knows what she is doing, and she told me that she had actualy had dreads herself for 6yrs. and that she learned how to do them in thai land. and that made me feel realy at ease. she was so efficiant that she was able to do half my head in the first apointment, and it looks neat. im sitting here at the keybord playing with them. they feel tight, yet soft, the stuff she put in the dreads was clay based insead of wax base. and it made the dreads feels realy nice and smell great and also looked realy even and well done. if you want to get dreads and its your first time, go here. you wont be sorry.

Pros: the kitty named portland, traci, the abience, oh yea and the tin shead for thier awsome food.

Cons: no cons at all. very much worth the money

I have never had such great hair styles in my life. Mitch is the best stylist by far. Everytime I leave Spank I leave loving my hair and my new look. The atmosphere is very relaxed and comfy. As long as I live in Portland Mitch will be the only stylist to cut my hair.

Pros: Atmosphere and Pricing

Cons: There are no cons to this place.

I had a very nice stylist cut my hair. I brought in a picture of the katie holmes cut and I ended up w/ a fullet. I should have been more specific about what I wanted, but I don't think I'll come back.

I've been a client of Mitch's for the 2 1/2 years. Over that time he's given me the best, most stylish haircuts, and frosted my hair beautifully. So it was with a momentary brain lapse last month that I thought I could lighten my new super short, super chic hairdo on my own. DISASTER! My dark ash blonde hair turned this weird shade of orange. I tried 3 different color products on my hair in less than 24 hours and ended up with the odd, strawberry blonde-ish color that was strangely too close to my skin tone. I wanted to die! I got the courage up to call Mitch the next day and confess my sins. He was able to fit me in a couple days later, staying late to fix my mess. I looks amazing! I went from this ugly color to this really HOT platinum blonde. I feel like I'm out of a fashion magazine! I will never stray again - Mitch rules my hair. My bad hair got Spanked into shape. Thanks, Mitch, for being so amazing!

I'd followed my ex-stylist over to Spank about three years ago, where he promptly deserted me and wandered off into who knows where. It was like a divorce. A death. I hate it when I lose a good stylist. I follow them from Salon to Salon like a poor little imprinted chick. And when they are gone, I am totally adrift with visions of hair cut horrors from the past bringing me to my quivering knees. Ah ha! My fickle ex, you led me unwittingly to Paradise. And Paradise is ruled by none other than the wizard of style, Mitch Briden, conjurer of styling perfection. His Salon, Spank, is warm, clean, and inviting with the comfort of a friend's welcoming living room. Set yourself down in an overstuffed comfy chair, or recline on the equally comfy sofa while you wait. Browse through materials ranging from "high fashion" rags, to laugh out loud publications. And if you are very very lucky, Portland, Mr. macho meow resident cat, may deign to let you pet him. I so look forward to an appointment with Mitch. I've even driven cross town at rush hour to make my Mitch date. And I have never never ever had anything but the most excellent cut and styling from him. I received the best haircut I've ever had today! I have super thick, long, colored hair and I wanted to keep the length but get rid of the dead weight. I called for an appt. around noon and she got me in an hour later, on a busy Saturday during the Alberta Street Fair. I am normally fearful going to a new stylist as I have had some pretty botched jobs with layering. However, the moment I walked in I felt I was in good hands. Rachel is professional, personable and absolutely knows how to give a modern cut that is not over the top (for those more conservative types). I felt I could completely trust her, so when she asked if she could add more bangs, I left it entirely up to her and I am soooo glad I did. I love my cut. It fits my lifestyle (wash and go), it's modern, but not too out there (I'm a teacher). It's perfect. I highly recommend my NEW hairstylist, Rachel Warner.

Pros: The price is very reasonable for this very professional salon

Cons: If they have any, I didn't see it.

I have gone to Mitch several times since I moved to Portland this past winter and I love him and my haircuts and color! He knows hair, fashion and is very entertaining…what else can a girl ask for? I am writing this review primarily to discuss Japanese Hair Straightening. I have very curly hair, naturally, and in the wet or humid climates, it is just unmanageable and unpredictable. Mitch does Japanese Hair Straightening and oh so well! My hair is not only straight and stylish now, but it is healthy, shiny and very easy to manage. I was in shock for days after because I could not believe the awesome difference. It has been almost a month now and I look and feel great! I can either towel dry and get a slight kink, windblown look or I can spend 4 or 5 minutes running a straightener through it for a very sleek and straight, Jennifer Aniston sort of look. I can also roll out of bed and just go. Never could that happen before with my mess of a nest kind of hair. One last thing—this isn’t just for those with curly hair. If you have hard to manage or hard to style straight or wavy hair, Japanese Hair Straightening can give you high quality hair that is easy to maintain. Two things: 1) I really enjoy visiting with Mitch as if I'm visiting with an old friend. He remembers you and genuinely cares. 2) He's just great with the hair. I'm a little too picky for someone with a boring boy's cut, but I have had some pretty rough cuts--one of the worst being at another pricey salon in the SE that shall remain nameless. He repaired that disaster several months ago and has been doing the do (the hair do) ever since. He's just great and like him, the place is very low key and unpretentious. Well worth the snip.

Pros: Great cut. Great guy. Great little cozy shop.

Cons: They're not open 24 hours (tho he'd probably try if you asked him!)

I'm a cheapskate, and I've had my short blonde hair vacuumed for $10 or less for over a decade. I treated myself to the only- a-bit pricier treat of a haircut at Spank. I'm so glad I did. Randee is fantastic, easy to talk to, totally trustworthy, and she makes me look like Tin Tin. What more can you ask for? I didn't know I could have style. Thank you, Randee, for giving me some. I'm a regular now, and couldn't be more pleased. Spank is professional, EXTREMELY reasonably priced, and worth the trip.
