Lagniappe has the best southern food in Portland, period! Madison makes a mean muffaletta and his crawfish etouffe is the best I've had since leaving NO. Everything on the menu is superb except maybe the "bread" pudding. I think it qualifies as a custard myself. Try the roast beef po'boy (dressed) and the andouille sausage and smoked chicken gumbo for a real soul experience. Maddy, you are the roux master!

Just called to get a delicious po-boy like I had there last summer. Guy on the phone said it was closed 3 weeks ago. Thats sad, loved their food.

Closed? What happened?

We went to this place a couple of weeks ago and it was excellent, I had the Jambalaya and then had the Bread Pudding for desert. We just went back on Friday night and they are no longer there, anybody know what has happened and if the chefs have gone somewhere else?

Getting better all the time

Don't get me wrong, I've eaten at Lagniappe about a dozen times in the last two years. I was compelled to write this review after after the prompt, delicious lunch I had today. Alberta St. is somewhat of a minor destination, business fluctuates and sometimes service and quality does the same thing.

I have always been satisfied by Lagniappes food. The taste, value, and quality is there. More than that you can really see that the staff takes pride in what they put on the table in front of you. The bread used for the po- boys is top quality and makes all the difference. The collard greens I had today were tangy, toothesome and not too salty or greasy. The crawfish salad is among my favorites on the menu.

On top of everything else, the menu is fairly vegetarian friendly.

I just can't say enough good about Lagniappe. Their food is made from the heart... no mass produced imitation cajun food here. What you'll find is southern comfort food done right, and they genuinely care about the product that they put on your plate. Don't hesitate to ask about any item on the menu, they're more than happy to answer your questions and chat with you for a while. There isn't a bad item on their menu, and their specials are outstanding as well. And definitely save room for dessert!

Po-boy's done right

I lived in New Orleans for a few years, and the po-boys are the food I miss the most. Lagniappe does em right. They are more expensive than $3.50 at that corner store on Royal St, but they're just as tasty, and so big that I usually order the 1/2 po-boy + one side order deal. Add an Abita, and it's like NOLA all over again... except I'm not sweating to death ;)

Easily the best po' boys in Portland, hands downs.

Cajun, New Orleans or whatever you're not going to find a better po' boy in Portland than the ones over at Lagniappe. There big, delicious and "fully dressed", just like the ones I find back home. Technically I guess I'm Cajun being born in Lafayette, La. though I've to New Orleans more than enough to know what a po' boy is . Lagniappe has them and they are good! The shrimp, oysters or crawfish are loaded on and fried to perfection. I've also had the jambalaya with shrimp added and it was as equally tasty, same flavors and spices as down home. I'm not sure were the one reviewer got "skimpy" from, the numerous times we've been there was one or two boxes needed after dinner! I've also lived in the Alberta Arts neighborhood for a couple years and Last Thursdays are a busy time for every business that night. It's a crazy good time, a little like New Orleans. So relax, enjoy your Hurricane or Abita Beer and take it all in.

• Cons: No more Abita Amber in Portland!

This is New Orleans, not Cajun!

Good service and even better food. A true taste of New Orleans. The crawfish tails are a must have as an apetizer and anything ending with Po boy will tickle your taste buds. The newly added Fried chicken is amazing. Tasty strips of breast that I believe are pan fried because they are not covered with grease left me wanting more, but the serving sizes are so generous I will get my fix from my leftovers. Do your best to save room for dessert, the bread pudding melts in your mouth. The table side Crystals and Tony Chacheres is a great touch, I don't cook without them.

The Big and Tasty Easy

I am a big fan of this place. I have been to Naw'lens and this is the goods. Big flavors and a great big value for the dollar. All the food is always tasty and very fresh. I have also met the owner Madison and he knows his food , look at the guy, that ain't no rice cakes or Tofu and he will tell you what is the best bet on any given night, but you can never go wrong with BIG OL' SHRIMP PO'BOY. And the cocktails can get you where you need to be, watch out or you might just be yelling "Where you at"? So get in there , have one of the best meals you can afford in this day and age and "Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez" , And my kids love the place , to see my 13 year old daughter mac down a fried oyster Po'Boy is quite cool.

• Cons: Some people just don't get it, so relax have a cocktail and you just might

at least it's not a bar...

but if this is new orleans, i'll pass on the visit...

granted, it wasn't a bar, like most places are on Alberta, full of smoky, half-drunk, after-hours patrons...'

we were seated promptly by a friendly server, only to find ourselves battling a tree in order to look at each other...

the food was overpriced, the fried catfish po'boy tasted like a McDonald's fish sandwich, and my date's Jambalaya was among the blandest food i have ever tasted...the beans and rice side was flavorful, but skimpy...i thought cajuns were food people...

we skipped the drinks...they were average price, but since the food wasn't top notch, i assumed the drinks wouldn't be...

and the next day I paid for it all running to and from the bathroom...

not worth the drive, we should have gone to the little hole in the wall ethiopian place down the street...

• Pros: probably pretty romantic when it's hot out...
• Cons: not enough food for the money...
