i have been referred to salon 77 by a co-worker and have given it 2 tries. i went to one stylist the first time, and while i was happy with my hair cut and color, she hardly talked to me and didn't seem interested at all in making me a return customer. i went in one more time and requested Mandy b/c i have read good reviews about her on citysearch. not only am i not happy with my cut (which is too short and not at all what i asked for), i have to agree w/ the review just below me... she seemed so disinterested in me and my life and was quiet the whole time, with the exception of answering a few questions that i asked her. to spend that much money on a so-so experience is so frustrating. i will definitely not go back to salon 77 and i will NOT recommend them to my friends. i am a big believer in word-of-mouth referrals and 77 will not get any from me!
Pros: cool space and cool location
Cons: bad service, disinterested staff, have had better haircuts/colors elsewhere!

I chose this salon after reading rave reviews. The salon is in a nice location in the Pearl district, and I got a good feeling when I walked in. I had selected Mandy (the co-owner), but after being sat down to have my hair cut, she seemed totally disinterested in what she was doing. She barely talked to me at all, and seemed in a hurry to get rid of me. The haircut itself was okay, but I was surprised when she didn't even bother to dry my hair afterwards. I was left with dripping wet hair, and as my hair dried while I was eating lunch afterwards, my shirt became covered noticeably with cut pieces of hair that had been stuck to my wet hair. I doubt I will be going back, or if I do, I will try another stylist besides Mandy.

Based on the great reviews for the is salon, I booked an appointment with the owner. I found her to be unfriendly, and harsh on my head (pulling my hair). She wasn't very talkative, and didn't really give me the hair color, or cut, I had to described to her. I thought . . maybe she is just concentrating really hard, but when I asked her questions about what she was doing, she blew me off. In fact, I'm pretty sure she left the color in my hair too long, it turned out super bleached, but then again . . . she left me under the dryer for about 45 min. Maybe she recognized she forgot about me, because she did say if I wanted to come back in, she would darken my hair. I also wish she described what she was putting in my hair (product, etc). She hardly said one word to me, but chatted with other stylists most of the time. Unless the other stylists are different, (but if this what the owner portrays) . . . I wouldn't recommend this salon..
Pros: They sell Kevin Murphy products
Cons: overall not impressed . .. read my review to find out why

The great thing about Mandy at 77 is that you can always rely on her to know the latest and most innovative cutting and coloring techniques. If you're willing to let her to do her creative "thang" rather than always having a dead-set idea of what your hair should look like, she can help you find a 'do that you wouldn't ever have thought of yourself. And isn't that what starts trends in the first place? Give her a try - you won't be disappointed!
Pros: Hip, innovative
Cons: Parking

I had an unfortunate experience getting my hair done at a salon (not to be named) in the Portland area. I'll admit, the cut was awesome... but the gentleman helping me wouldn't listen to my preferences on color and placement of the color. My highlights turned out absolutely horrific!! They were streaky and orange, like the tail of a tiger or something.. some were hardly even visible at all.. I was very disappointed since that salon was voted one of 2007's best salons in Portland here on citysearch. The gentleman that helped me also came highly recommended. It honestly made me question the validity of these comments on citysearch. But after my experience with Nickol, it restored my faith in the rankings. Nickol was able to go in and make sense of the confusing "highlights" in my hair. She was able to tone them down into a more subtle shade. She was obviously very knowledgeable and clearly understood the concept of my desired color (unlike the first gentleman). I would DEFINITELY, truly recommend Nickol for anyone that is looking for superb color for their hair. I will most certainly be back to her again. Thank you for fixing me!! :)
Pros: Quality service, knowledgeable employees
Cons: Downtown Parking (that's all)

I was recommended by a friend to Rosie- and let me tell you, I think I've finally found a hairstylist I can go back to! Not only was she super friendly, but trust her to do what she wanted to my hair. I went in knowing that I wanted it a bit shorter, thinned out, and more stylish (my hair is shoulder length brown). Usually it makes me nervous when I'm like, " Go for it and do whatever you want cuz obviously I have no clue..." but she kept asking if I liked this and that, and she also dried my hair before cutting it more (which is great because your hair won't suddenly be an inch long after it's done drying). Atmosphere was fun, relaxing and trendy. Haircut took about an hour and was a wonderful price.
Pros: Atmosphere, expertise, conversation.

I just moved to the area and I found Nickol when I was looking for Christian. She was great, she knew exactly what to do with my hair color and she even put a gloss that makes it look shinny and soft. I still need to find Christian to get a great haircut, Does anyone know where he went?
Pros: Nickol
Cons: it's kind of hard to park for more than 2 hour for hair color

I absolutely love my hair. I will be going back again and again. Nickol does very cool hair. Glad my roommate found her and made me go to her.

I've been waiting to find a great colorist in this town and at last found one that does a better job that I could of ever asked for. Nickol really is great at placing color and would go as far to say as she is a color artist. I came in with my hair messed up from another person who I won't name. I've already sent one of my friends to her but from knowing how hard it is to find someone that makes you feel good not just when you leave the salon but good 4 weeks later is hard to find and has to be recommended. Not sure if the stylists read this but thanks Nikol. Can't wait to see you soon.
Pros: A true artist of a colorist
Cons: None
