Never know what you are going to get
by lizzysreviews
I have been to Hama Sushi 3 times and will not go back. The first time I went was great, the sushi was fresh and flavorful. After that, both my remaining experiences were not good. Service and Sushi were terrible, especially the final time I went. The sushi was so bad, tasted old and smelled, that we actually did not eat two of the rolls. The waitress was slow and never smiled. We waisted 40 bucks and 1 and 1/2 hours on bad sushi.
- Pros: location
- Cons: slow, bad service, iffy sushi, expensive

Great Sushi for a Great Price

I love Portland, and I love sushi. I love Hama Sushi! As a vegetarian, I have never eaten the fish options at Hama, but fish-eating friends rave about the food. The vegetarian options are delicious and very filling! I go back time and time again and have never had problems with the wait staff, the service, the speed or the quality of the food.
avoid if you're hungry

ok, the take out crowd has this place under its thumbs, no way is there the same interest in the crowd in the restaurant, sitting down, on a sat night at 7PM
- Pros: another maybe good restaurant
- Cons: omg don't bother, the slowest service in town
my fave sushi place
by knowyourchicken
I have to say that this is my and my boyfriend's favorite sushi place. Yes, the atmosphere could use a little sprucing up, but the sushi is just the tastiest I've had in Portland. The miso soup is also quite addicting. We usually eat so much we're in pain by the time we leave! The service is fine, non obtrusive, and timely, sitting at the sushi bar is always interesting, and the price is right. The pieces of sushi are just the right size, the salmon always sparkles, and the eel is scrummy.
Best I've had yet.

In comparison to the 5 other sushi places I have dined at throughout Portland, this establishment by far had the best fish. It was my first experience at Hama and it turned out to be a good start to tasty relationship. Philly, Spicy Tuna, Yokohama, and one other tempura (not soggy at all) battered delight rounded out our sushi and the texture and freshness of the fish was stellar. After this prelim visit where only rolls were eaten to test the fish, I will be going back for Sashimi. I am hoping that i didn't arrive on "delivery" day and got lucky. The tempura vegetables were perfectly battered and still crisp. Service was decent, at any Sushi spot it is recommended to sit at the bar and watch the preparation and look at the fish, both or which were beautiful. We will be going back.

Skillfully made sushi and a quiet, minimalist atmosphere make for great Japanese dining in the Hollywood District.

In Short
Sushi lovers and hungry shoppers from the adjacent Trader Joe's relish the calming effect of the small, minimalist dining room hidden away behind frosted windows on busy Sandy Boulevard. The menu includes well-prepared entrees like crispy tempura, chicken teriyaki and udon noodles. The real focus is on the vividly fresh sushi; all the basics are done well. Special rolls like spicy lobster with scallop, shrimp tempura roll and spicy tuna with unagi are beautifully presented.
Worse service, avoid going to eat here.

The service was very bad, they don't have any customer service. My experience was very bad, I got there and my friend didn't arrive yet.So, they asked me once, and then they totally ignored me after that.My friend arrived, then it took a little while to take our order, then we try to change something, and totally rude, didn't let us. Then they kept ignoring us. Never ask, how is everything, something else, water, whatever, nothing. I went to the restroom, before I left, no toilet paper, I told the waitress, no even say Thank you for letting me now, nothing.Very bad service, rude, food not good. Not recommended at all !!!
- Cons: Everything!
one of best sushi bars in town
by iluvducks
The sushi quality is excellent at this place. The chefs here know their stuff. I would recommend this place for any occasion. Make sure you try their squid and mackeral. It's some of the best I have had, including the sushi I have had in Japan. It's pretty amazing. They have a very friendly staff who are attentive and helpful. The rice is excellent as well. I hope this place is here to stay.
- Pros: service, price, quality
- Cons: preparation time
Ask for what's fresh, and it'll be good

I like Hama, I hope they still have their sushi "happy hour" before 7:00pm. 20% off, nice. The people there are wonderfully friendly, sashimi is clean and nicely prepared. Once I did get some really bad ikura, which was a surprise, because everything else has been good. Needed in that particular neighborhood, too.
- Pros: Value, Staff
- Cons: Very bright lights, Million kids upstairs
