ok, the take out crowd has this place under its thumbs, no way is there the same interest in the crowd in the restaurant, sitting down, on a sat night at 7PM

Pros: another maybe good restaurant

Cons: omg don't bother, the slowest service in town

I have to say that this is my and my boyfriend's favorite sushi place. Yes, the atmosphere could use a little sprucing up, but the sushi is just the tastiest I've had in Portland. The miso soup is also quite addicting. We usually eat so much we're in pain by the time we leave! The service is fine, non obtrusive, and timely, sitting at the sushi bar is always interesting, and the price is right. The pieces of sushi are just the right size, the salmon always sparkles, and the eel is scrummy.

In comparison to the 5 other sushi places I have dined at throughout Portland, this establishment by far had the best fish. It was my first experience at Hama and it turned out to be a good start to tasty relationship. Philly, Spicy Tuna, Yokohama, and one other tempura (not soggy at all) battered delight rounded out our sushi and the texture and freshness of the fish was stellar. After this prelim visit where only rolls were eaten to test the fish, I will be going back for Sashimi. I am hoping that i didn't arrive on "delivery" day and got lucky. The tempura vegetables were perfectly battered and still crisp. Service was decent, at any Sushi spot it is recommended to sit at the bar and watch the preparation and look at the fish, both or which were beautiful. We will be going back. -Steven

The service was very bad, they don't have any customer service. My experience was very bad, I got there and my friend didn't arrive yet.So, they asked me once, and then they totally ignored me after that.My friend arrived, then it took a little while to take our order, then we try to change something, and totally rude, didn't let us. Then they kept ignoring us. Never ask, how is everything, something else, water, whatever, nothing. I went to the restroom, before I left, no toilet paper, I told the waitress, no even say Thank you for letting me now, nothing.Very bad service, rude, food not good. Not recommended at all !!!

Cons: Everything!

The sushi quality is excellent at this place. The chefs here know their stuff. I would recommend this place for any occasion. Make sure you try their squid and mackeral. It's some of the best I have had, including the sushi I have had in Japan. It's pretty amazing. They have a very friendly staff who are attentive and helpful. The rice is excellent as well. I hope this place is here to stay.

Pros: service, price, quality

Cons: preparation time

I like Hama, I hope they still have their sushi "happy hour" before 7:00pm. 20% off, nice. The people there are wonderfully friendly, sashimi is clean and nicely prepared. Once I did get some really bad ikura, which was a surprise, because everything else has been good. Needed in that particular neighborhood, too.

Pros: Value, Staff

Cons: Very bright lights, Million kids upstairs

I just happened on this place on a trip to Trader Joe's. I didn't get to see much of the restaurant because I ordered food to go, but it seemed very clean and nicely "decorated"....minimal and relaxing. The waiter was very nice and asked me if I wanted something to drink while I was deciding. I ordered 2 rolls, Spicy California and salmon skin. Both were very good and the sizes were just right. I hate gi-normous pieces you can't fit into your mouth in one bite. I thought the prices were good too--under $10. I will definately go back.

The sushi at Hama is very fresh and tasty. The atmosphere is everything a sushi bar should be, peaceful and relaxing. The chefs are more traditional and greeted us on entering. The server was still working out a few kinks, I mean how can the server not know what fish was in the specials? Both the Miso soup and Kyuri No Sunome were tasty, however both lacked seaweed. The sushi was delicious and traditionally (bite) sized. The fish was fresh, but not quite on par with the fish served at other sushi bars I have experienced. As with most sushi bars in Portland, you have to ask for more ginger and wasabi with the small amounts they give you to start. Water glasses were always full, but the waitress failed to ask about our food and inform us when my wifes veggie dish was significantly later than my sushi.

Pros: Nice Atmosphere, Friendly Chefs, Fresh Sushi

Very fresh sushi and authentically crafted rolls served by very friendly people. Lots of seating at the sushi bar. Nicely decorated. Thanks to the frosted windows, you'll never know you're right on Sandy Blvd. Prices are reasonable but not cheap. Cheap sushi is cheap for a reason though. I hope Hama Sushi does well. The Savory Tart (formerly in this space) was a nice little restaurant but didn't last due to lack of business. Don't let this place suffer that same fate.

Pros: fresh fish, friendly staff, authentic

Skillfully made sushi and a quiet, minimalist atmosphere make for great Japanese dining in the Hollywood District.  See the full editorial review.
