this place has gone down hill

by homewreckerrrrr

I have been going to Tryon Creek for years. It was pretty cool with the staff being very friendly and the food was good some times even great. Lately not only does the staff some time seem like they was just a soon smash their head with a hammer than serve you a decent drink but the food is terrible. I am not just saying bad but it’s awful and I have went back several times to see if it was just a fluke. I think that the girls that tend the bar really don’t give a heck if your food comes out hot or not. From a burger that was barely done with wilted lettuce to being so poorly put together when I asked for extra onions then looked I realized I just had a sliver to begin with. The food is cold, greasy and don’t bother with the Tryon dip unless you prefer a slice of meat so thin you can see through it. The mozzarella wedges are cold and very greasy and the sauce that it came with tasted like they took a can of tomato soup and added a little garlic to it. It was very watery and tasted like S&%T. The Tryon dip which used to be really good is reduced to a thin slice of meat with a ton of bun and they make sure to serve it cold because they really don’t have any method of communication between the kitchens to let them know when the order is ready. They just occasionally stick their head in the door and look. It’s a really poor system and the food generally is cold by the time it makes it to your table. I used to really enjoy their pizza too but unfortunately it has also gone down hill and I think since now they have a special on one of the nights reducing the price down to $10 its because that’s all its worth. I really think the owner needs to send in a mystery shopper to see how poor the food really is. If you want attitude, drinks that are some times good some times poor and food that is poor pretty much all the time then this is the place for you. Oh on a good note they do have a variety of bent pool cues and older tables to play on. Take it from some one who has gone here for years. It’s going down hill.

  • Pros: good beer selection
  • Cons: poor food, attitude from servers

college style sports bar

by drunkenduck

It is what it is. A semi- sports bar with a lot of college students. God place to watch the blazers, ducks or even OSU. If you go in during one of those games what the hell do you think will be on all the TVs. If you dont like that then walk to the back and change one of the TVs no one is watching. Dont just sit there and complain to yourself then come here and write a poor review. There service is great, bartenders have been nothing but nice to me. The place is smokey but wont be after the 1st of the year so deal with it.

  • Pros: Good daily specials, Nice workers, 3 Pool Tables.
  • Cons: Smokey, Parking can be rough.

Good if you're a student!

by plainswalker75

It seems that most of the previous reviewers were maybe expecting a bar straight out of the Pearl! Tryon is a classic-style bar; there's games on TV, food that your mother wouldn't approve of and bartenders that don't take lip from anyone. Seriously, most of the bartenders are of some of the coolest people in the world, but if you're rude and expect them to bow down to your needs, then you better expect to get poor service. On the other hand, if you're nice and polite, they're quite pleasant and awesome to talk to. There's usually about a dozen beers available, including several seasonal microbrews and happy hour includes 2.00 well drinks and the usual specials on foods.

Due to the close proximity of Lewis & Clark College, the bar tends to be frequented by undergrads and law students, although professors may be spotted there on occasion. It's a great place to go to with your friends after school/work, but the younger crowd tends to steer clear on weekends. Anyone going into the bar expecting haute cuisine will be sorely disappointed and yes, anyone bothered by smoking should steer clear. However, it's a great place to stop for a quiet pint, or to watch the game and they have one of the better tasting burgers for under $6.00 you'll find at most bars in the city!

Weekly specials:

Monday: 50 cent Tacos

Tuesday: 2.00 domestic beer, 2.50 micro

Wednesday: 5.00 burger and domestic beer, 6.00 with micro

Thursday: 4.00 Long Island night!

Friday: Bartender's Choice

(There is typically free pool after 7 on the weekends/some weeknights, at the bartender's discretion; you need to ask for the Foosball, as they tend to get lost)

  • Pros: Close to Lewis & Clark campus, good weekly deals, interesting staff (if you're not rude to them), good place to go after work
  • Cons: Smoky (if you absolutely can't stand that), consistent attitude/activities, frequently busy

Cheap food, but very smokey and servers can have major attitude

by boredinsammamish

We just moved to the area and have tried this place out a few times. The food and drinks are cheap. They have a different happy hour every night. Monday is taco night and they are 50 cents, and worth just that. They taste like they just browned the meat and threw in some salt and pepper. My husband asked the girl bartender how big they were because he wanted an idea of how many to order and she got a huge attitude and said "they're tacos! what do you expect?!". Then she said that they don't come with sour cream or guacamole and we both said "okay" and she responded with "okay, what?!". Our table was dirty and we were even scared to ask her to wipe it off because she looked like she would flip out. It is VERY smokey and there are no open windows or doors to get fresh air. I heard another customer ask her if there were any fans and she pointed to a fan and goes "what's that?". Maybe she thinks giving customers a major attitude is a way to make good tips, but not in my book.

The other two times we have been there the two male servers/bartenders were very cool and friendly. The food is cheap (around 6 to 8 bucks for a meal) but then again it is bar food so don't expect much. It is a good place for a game because they have lots of TV's and pool tables. Their pizzas look good but I haven't tried it yet. I go to this place just for the convenience but wouldn't go out of my way to go here.

  • Pros: Cheap food, lots of TV's, big liquor & beer selection, pool tables
  • Cons: Very smoky, servers can have major attitudes, very dark inside

21 and never gone to another bar you may like it

by brewjo

It's not a sports bar, maybe it was at one time but not any more. More a hang out for college students. Service was better last time I was in but nothing special. Could be a great place but... maybe I'm just getting older and it's not my kinda place. Bathrooms are awful. Decent selection of beer although I really want a good Black and Tan in Portland and can't find a bartender who can float it. I might go back if my co-workers insists but not on my owe accord.

  • Pros: fairly good pool tables, hospitable crowd
  • Cons: food's bad, bathrooms' awful, over-priced drinks

really? an 8.5?

by countrytrav

i don't even know where to start. all great sports bars have a plethora of games on, giving the customer plenty of action to choose from. here, almost every television had on the blazers game, with the two exceptions showing some sort of C level boxing league. there are several other basketball games on, not to mention the masters, and several baseball games as well. and what's up with the service? it's happy hour, there should be several servers, not one poor girl doing the best she can. i also have to say that the food was well below average. eating the nachos was like eating cheese covered cheerios, the chips were so broken up. i feel like someone in the bag was jumping on the bags before sending them out. all in all, a bad experience to be had. i'll go elsewhere next time.

  • Pros: decent drink happy hour
  • Cons: Too much emphasis on one game, bad service, weak happy hour food deals, terrible parking

Avoid at all costs

by jtimaher

Went there expecting a decent happy hour and bar food with some games but all the tv's were playing the blazer game, the nachos were a mix of broken chips with low grade cheese layed on top and nowhere on the bottom, and the service was absolutely horrible. The chicken tenders were ok if you like fried batter with no chicken inside. Unfortunately an all around bad experience. Look elsewhere for a good time.

  • Pros: Decent priced drinks and lots of pool tables.
  • Cons: Horrible service, horrible food, horrible game selection.

Great hangout

by gussied_up

It is SUPER smokey and some of the wait staff need a little attitude adjustment but other than that they offer great games, tunes and grub. The door guy always has nifty facial hair too.

  • Pros: Lots of games
  • Cons: SMOKEY!!
