I was so discouraged at the west coast pizza and how it differs from the East Coast, until My friend too my here.
Excellent! The crust is good, tasty chewy and not soggy like so many other places. The sauce is excellent, flavorful. And the cheese is great.
This place has the right stuff for great pizza. Too bad there were not more of this kind of pizza in Portland.
My definition of good pizza... You just had thanksgiving dinner and you are stuffed to the gills, you go out with your friends... they serve pizza... If you are too full, the pizza is not all that, if however you have room for a slice, it's great pizza!! :)
- Pros: Best pizza in portland!
- Cons: Long lines and wait
Apizza Scholls... not so great!
by dosha1191
I don't get the obsession with this place. The crust is okay, the sauce is okay, the toppings are fresh but, what about the cheese? In my book, the cheese is essential to a good pizza. Along with a GOOD sauce and crust. They have none of these qualities. I was extremely disappointed by A Pizza Scholls. They do NOT produce the type of pizza that deserves any kind of wait. Escape From NY puts them to shame. I had to add salt to my pizza because they didn't add enough cheese to qualify for a "tasteful" pizza. Cheese, in my opinion... along with the crust and sauce, makes the pizza. BUT, the cheese is essential. I could hardly see the cheese on the pizza and we had to ask for some parmesan because they don't keep it on the tables. The ultimate call out was that they tell you they will take $2 off your order if you don't have cheese. BIG indication they are going to be chinzy on this!
In my opinion, they don't deserve the attention or the biz they are getting. The only thing I can say is that the wait staff was great and very attentive.
- Pros: Service was awesome!
- Cons: No cheese!!!

I've eaten at top places in Chicago and NY, and Apizza Scholls is my favorite.
It has a unique style that may not be for everyone. Some of my friends don't care for the chewy crust or the simplicity of toppings, but I think that is what makes it great. An unbelievable crust that is chewy and crispy and tangy and thin yet substantial...
The toppings are almost minimalistic, but I never mind because they are such high quality that it doesn't take loads of it to get great flavor. The goat-horn peppers... oh my god, how does one little red pepper have so much flavor?
It gets very busy, but we've rarely had to wait too long. The staff is helpful, maybe a little brusque, but who wouldn't be when you've got dozen's of tables clamoring for more?
Anyway... go there. Buy a bottle of wine, too, to awaken all the flavors of the tomatoe sauce... its worth it.
- Pros: The Best Pizza Ever
- Cons: The pizza isn't very good left over
Great pizza!

We decided to try this out because we saw it on Anthony Bordain and it also came highly recommended by a family member. Glad we did! It is a little difficult to find parking in this area, but we lucked out. We went on a Friday night and sat at the bar rather than waiting for a table. It wouldn't have been much of a wait anyway for a table. Our pizza did take awhile, 45 minutes, but the pizza was worth it. Tons of garlic, pepperoni, and not over the top on the sauce. The customer service here is really great too. Highly recommended!!
- Pros: Pizza was delicious!
- Cons: Hard to find parking, long wait
EXPENSIVE FOR VERY LITTLE
by boomshakalakalaka
easy to spend $50 here and still be hungry. beware that on the menu it says $2 for additional toppings, but that goes for substitutions also. So if you want onions instead of mushrooms, they will give you a tiny amt of onion instead, and charge you for it. also be prepared to wait 45 minutes to an hour even on a slow night.
- Pros: location
- Cons: everything else

This place is hands down the best pizza in Portland for three reasons: 1. simple, quality ingredients, 2. wood fire ovens 3. sensible flavor combinations. You won't find BBQ chicken pizza or similar junk, just simple, honest food. The crust is both crisp and chewy and has a carmelized taste that will rock your world. Toppings are big on flavor and simultaneously dainty. A caesar salad is exceptionally tasty and light, without a fishy aftertaste, some good micros on tap. The wait can be long but the staff is chill and good about getting you set up with a drink while you wait. Pizzas run about 20bucks and are extremely filling. I eat like a horse and can only ever manage three pieces. Salads are about 8bucks. I've had pizza about every place in town, including the burnt garbage they're serving up at kens and this place is by far the most delicious, most satisfying and worth the wait.
- Pros: yummy food!
- Cons: tight seating and tablespace
best pizza we have had on the west coast
by mwfowler72
only had it once so far, but it lived up to expectations. Paper thin crust, cooked perfect. Have had some awful pizza since we moved to the west coast, but Apizza Scholls definitely does it right. Anxiously awaiting our next visit. Looking forward to trying Sicilian Sundays.
Do you like it just because the wait makes you hungry?

My husband and I live in the neighborhood and have tried many of the restaurants that have inhabited this space. I'm home grown and my husband is from California.
The pizzas we enjoy most are from Zupan's - made in Italy (and frozen), so maybe we are not the best judges. I will say, however, that the pizza we "enjoyed" was very disappointing and the only thing that I can understand about the great reviews, is that the people who had to wait soooo long in line, is that they were HUNGRY. We were lucky, in that we tried the place soon after its opening. The wait staff was very rude and the pizza was limp. We do so much better at home with a good pizza from Zupan's.
I suppose the ingredients are probably good - but, everything else taken into consideration, I'll give the place a two.
I have to put in my two cents only because I drive by those long lines every day and I just don't get it. My husband thinks that we should try again - but hey, we have too many good places to go (such as Toji's Korean Grill) within 10 minutes walk from our house. And, we have our great Zupan's pizza - cooked in the oven or on the grill which always result in perfection!
Amazing food and staff....The good reviews are true

I've been going to apizza scholls for quite some time and the one thing I can say about their pizza's are that they are ALWAYS consistant. I've seriously never eaten at a place that is as consistant is apizza scholls. It's just soooooo yummy!!! Yes you do have to wait especially on the wkn and if you're hungry it can be bothersome but when I go I expect to wait but know it will be worth the wait. It's a good thing b/c you know each and every pie is made to perfection and you can only make so many at a time when you cook them the way they do. The staff are very nice especially if you're a familiar face that dines frequently. As for the person who wrote that the owner was rude etc..... All I have to say is they must have been rude to her b/c the owners are very nice. Think about how you would react if someone told you how to run your business? I can only imagine they get sick of it......the whiney customers who don't understand their menu, or their seating policy. I can tell you they don't want the business of stuffy customers, just the people who really appreciate how amazing their pies are. I also go to kens aristan pizza (kinda similiar but apiza is better) and the wait there is just as long if not longer. That's what you get with small places that cook to perfection. :)
Bad seating policy, nasty owner and beer that too expensive
by acolumbo
Bad seating policy, nasty owner and beer that too expensive. This place can't be worth it! We waited an hour with a toddler and finally gave up. Thirty minutes into the wait, I inquired if we'd be getting the large table in the back that was sitting empty. I was told that they leave that table open for groups of 8 or more. I was a party of 6 and after befriending 2 other people on the waiting list to make a party of 8 they refused to give us the table - saying the policy doesn't work like that. Had we of walked in and put 8 on the reservation list, it would have been a different story. We we finally decided to give up - I tracked down the owner and complimented her on the reviews I'd been reading and suggested that they revisit their seating policy because she just lost our business and could have likely turned the table in the hour we'd spent waiting. It was at this point that she got huffy, shook her finger in my face, raised her voice and told me "obviously you don't understand the restaurant business" and then in a super-patronizing tone, said "thank you for telling me how to run my business." Then she turned her back on me and stormed off. I can't remember when I've been treated so poorly. Don't bother with this place - there's other great pizza in Portland and business owners who treat customers with so much more respect.
- Cons: bad seating policy, nasty owner
