I love the yarn selection at this store! I was confused as to who worked there and who was a customer like myself, so that made for an uncomfortable experience because I had no idea to whom my questions should be addressed. I went on a day when there was an EXCELLENT sale on cashmere yarns in the basement section, so that was a goldmine. Everything was 40% off! The girl who checked me out was really sweet and friendly. She helped me by telling me they had an online store, and since I was vacationing in Portland, I found this helpful to know. I will definitely shop Knit Purl online! Definitely worth a trip!
Pros: selection, sale section, online store
Cons: not sure who employees are

I am so confused when I read some of the other reviews. My experience with the store is only enjoyable and rather inspirational at times. The knitpurl that I visit on a regular basis is filled with the most beautiful yarn, the most wonderful assortment of knitting books and lastly, the most helpful and friendly staff imaginable. i have come into the store many times with a "major" knitting issue and they have always made time to help me. Yes, sometimes you have to wait until they are done helping others before they can help you but that is called being patient. I often leave the store feeling as if there is nothing beyond my abilities and for that I am very grateful...so are the recipients of all my knitted gifts. Cheers to the staff and owners of knitpurt!

First, I took by first beginners knitting class by Leslie and had to listen to personal issues. She failed to provide useful instruction for new beginners like the differences between the different types of yarn, increases and decresases, how to fix dropped stitches, binding off, etc. I had to buy a knitting book to learn on my own. Also, I compared other beginners knitting classes in the Portland area and they offered these things and more! Finally, the staff at Knit-Purl is very unfriendly and unhelpful. They act like it is a privilege to be helped by them. I had made a simple mistake on a scarf I was knitting and Sandy just sold me more yarn instead of taking a look at my project to help me correct my mistake. I had bought enough yarn for the project so selling me more was not a proper solution. There are other great yarn stores in Portland that offer a better selection, more indepth classes for the money and a more helpful and friendly staff like Yarn Garden, Abundant Yarn, Lint, etc.
Pros: Great location, nice looking store
Cons: Small selection, parking, unfriendly staff, weak classes

I love this store! The employees are friendly, the yarns are delicious and though pricey, for the fibers that are being offered in some of the lines, the product is well worth the price. Thursday nights are "Stitch & Sip" nights and are a wonderful time to go, sip a glass of champagne and chat with other local knitters. There has yet to be a Thursday night where I have gone and the store has not been packed full of knitters all chattering away. There is always someone there willing to help a knitter with a problem, and there are always various levels of experience present on any given Thursday night. This is my primary knitting store. At various others in Portland, I have received sub-par service, been extremely uncomfortable having to wade my way past overstuffed shelves & displays, and had a difficult time with poor lighting which makes it difficult to truly tell the actual color of the yarn I want to purchase. Knit Purl is the first yarn store I will always go to when I need to purchase yarn for a project. For me there is no other yarn store in Portland with all the characteristics that Knit Purl is in possession of!
Pros: Lighting, staff, yarn variety, Thursday nights.
Cons: the occasional grouchy shopper.

I love the yarn at Knit/Purl, but the staff is often unfriendly. I've shopped quite often there, and participated in their Thursday night knitting circle. Some of the staff are helpful and nice, but a few of them are quite haughty. I am your typical upper middle class 30-something experienced knitter. I've spent hundreds of dollars at Knit/Purl, and I'm to the point where I don't want to shop there anymore, because I feel like my yarn purchase shouldn't come with a bunch of attitude. I'd say my experiences run 50/50 positive/negative.
Pros: Wonderful Yarn, Nice Book Selection
Cons: Very Expensive, Staff is often rude.

I went in for the first time last night after reading the previous reviews and I just wanted to say that the ladies working there were just fine and the owner was particularly nice and outgoing. I'm not saying the previous reviewers were wrong - I'm just relating my experience as another data point to prospective knitters ...

I don't know what the other reviewer is talking about--I have always encountered very friendly, helpful service at Knit Purl. The staff have always been willing to answer questions and offer advice, and they are knowledgeable about the products and about knitting. My only problem with the store is that I typically want to buy everything in sight! I have been very happy with my shopping experiences at Knit Purl, as well as with the goods I've bought.
Pros: Quality, Variety, Service
Cons: Parking

I found this store too expensive (2-3 times what other stores charge) and the employees not very helpful. They had a lot of nice yarns in stock, but nothing in the medium- to low-end price range. I live downtown, but I drive to other stores for my knitting supplies instead.
Pros: hard to find yarns
Cons: expensive, unfriendly, nothing mid-range

I have been in knit purl a number of times and have been so unimpressed with the staff (I believe it is the owner) that despite the nice selection, I will not shop there. The woman who owns the store is a grouch, is only interested in pushing as many items as she can on people, and is unwilling to help when knitters encounter a knitting challenge. Isn't knitting, and shopping for knitting supplies supposed to be fun?
Pros: nice selection
Cons: Unhelpful, Unfriendly
