Great camaraderie
by GrubDango
I didn't know that there was such a large contingency of Big Ten and especially Fighting Illini in Portland. The City is the best supporter of college alumni. The first time I came in and told them I was from Illinois, they said Illinois is one of our biggest alumni clubs among dozens of others, and they said to bring in a banner and they'd hang it up. I brought one in the next day and they hung it up. Nice.
- Pros: Atmosphere, fun, and lots of fun. Plays our fight song.
ABUSIVE THUGS
by mdkemmis
I have never seen a place as unprofessional in my entire life. I was in there on a Saturday evening watching a baseball game, I got up to go smoke outside and when I came back in a bouncer was removing my chair. My girlfriend and I asked for our chairs back and the bartender said she would get them back. When the bouncer returned he said "If you two M*****F****** don't like it then you can get the F*** out" I was in shock, I told him not to speak like that to my girlfriend and the next thing I knew the wanna be tough guy had his hands on my head and was shoving me out the door. Then all his other thug bouncer friends join in. We called a cab to get out of there and were waiting for it when yet another overweight bouncer in need of affirmation for his tough guy status starts pushing me again and threatens to handcuff me. By this point I had enough and started telling the guy and his bouncer buddies that they had no right to cuff me, I was waiting on a public sidewalk for a cab. These people were very obviously high on their own power (yeah I guess being a bouncer makes you tough??) I have never been treated so poorly in my life and those guys need to lose their jobs before there is a law suit brought against them. No wonder there is so many fights and guns being pulled there, it is the bouncers who are the problem. This place is run by intimidation of the customers by a group of police school flunkies who get a rush out of being a bullies. I will never go there again and I recommend you don't either.
- Pros: none
- Cons: the staff
Slow Service
by 2sporty
Quite overpriced and slow service...even with less than half the tables occupied. Disappointing. TV's were great but if you can't get a beer, what's the point?
HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE
by darcienoelle
What an unfortunate experience it was at The City Sports Bar. We were held outside in a line forever only to find out there were a handful of people inside the bar. I think they were trying to make it look busier than it really was. Once inside, the service was slow, drinks watered-down and over-priced, bathrooms in horrible condition, and to top it all off - We heard the owner yelling at his staff and calling them names and just being viciously mean. I can't believe there are still people out there that treat others as bad as this man did.......you couldn't pay me to go back to that place!
Best Sports Bar in Portland
by mslabaugh
My alumni group and I have been going to The City Sports Bar for two seasons now. They have alway taken care for us very well. The service is great and the staff friendly. Beside one of the only bars in town with 3-HD Super screens well over 10 feet and more than 30 tv's carrying all the sports packages. I have two children that come with us ever weekend to watch our game. They make the bar Non Smoking on Saturdays for the families. They seem to have several alumni's that show up every week and have a great time which make it a fun place for all. I also was at that game where the other person reviewed the City and I do know all the staff, they makes us feel like a family. That Alumni had no other bar because the last years bar said they could not show there game. So they asked The City if they could show there game. The Alumni was very aware of The biggest game of the year playing at the City. Ohoi vs Michagain. Sometimes satellite do go down but it was nothing to do with The City. The Staff did everything they could to get it back up so quickly. if you want a great Sports Bar look no more. The City Sports Bar is your place. Great food, Lots of TV's, and fun for all your family. It is easy to write a bad review but next time put your self in there shoes.
- Pros: Service, TV's,TV's, TV's and great for the entire Family
- Cons: That You alumni is at some Smoked filled Bar.
Eat, Drink,Dance and be Happy
by sscott67
My girls and I went out last friday night bar hopping and ended up at The City, The girl at the front door was very nice and got us right in. The cover was only $5 for a friday where i found one of my favorite DJ in Portland, DJ Evil One (Eric) playing great music. It was not over crowded and very comfortable. The bartenders were nice and friendly. The girls and I felt very comfortable there. Not a meat market like some of the other bars in town. The girls and I will be back. Thre sports bar could stop a little earlier but it did bring in the men. Had Fun.
- Pros: Great DJ and Music, Great Girls Night Out, Late night Happy Hour Food
- Cons: Dancing could start earlier, More things to eat Late Night For Ladies
Spacious but empty promises
by melspicks
Venue for an alumni gathering that turned ridiculous. Televisions couldn't get the proper signal, missed most of the first half. The main screen in the bar was given to another alumni school, which our coordinators we not aware that there would be sharing going on. The HDTV couldn't get a different signal than the main screen so our game was only available on the four smaller screens around the HDTV screen. There was another projection screen of our game but it went out and didn't come back on until well into the 3rd quarter. The owner seemed a little greedy allowing both alumni there at the same time. Created an overcrowded bar, well above code for occupancy, slow service and an unexcusable showing of the game we were there to watch.
- Pros: Spacious

Non-stop sports action on 33 TVs and hearty American comfort food draws fans to this busy downtown venue.
Bad Service and Bad Attitudes
by bdace
The City Sports Bar has to be one of the lamest places to go in Portland. Not only is it 20 degrees hotter inside (a/c broken) but there are maybe 5 people in there on the weekends. Their drinks.....that's a whole other story. My friend was charged $6.50 for the same drink that I was charged $9.00. It seems like they just chage whoever - whatever they want - so not cool! I even witnessed the owner making very inappropriate comments about some of the guests in his bar. Don't go to this place unless you want to be overcharged, uncomfortable, and treated like a dirt!
So disapointing

The establishment made a really bad first impression.
Flat beer, no offer to switch kegs, the majority of
your beer list out of stock. In addition, this was a
friday night and an NBA playoff! There is an obvious lack
of communication between bartenders and servers. We
were told that one beer tap was not working while watching a table next to us recieve that beer! I am not particularly persnickity about my sports bars, But this was beyond bad. I had thought of renting one of the vip rooms for an event
in a couple of weeks, but after this, forget it. It'shave a beautiful establishment, it's a shame to ruin it with poor operations.
