I like going here just for the bar atmosphere music and food... The posters and knick knacks around the bar are interesting, easy to get a seat and maybe you wait a bit but if you really are in a hurry go to McDonalds instead just relax and enjoy the atmosphere. Terry Robb on Thursdays is well worth a trip to Halibuts
Pros: food music ambience
Cons: no coasters

While I agree that the food is overpriced, you cannot beat the crispy hot yumminess of these halibut morsels and their potato counterparts. YUM!
Pros: Great food
Cons: HORRIBLE crab cakes

this place has dang good fish and attractive employees. not attractive enough to make me want to spend so much money but it's good. food is way overpriced but the yuppies won't mind. i heard the owner is a jer k but the food is good so i don't care. probably some of the best fried fish in the city, worth checking out.

I went on a lazy, sunny afternoon to Halibut's with a friend. We were there for lunch and found the prices outrageous. $9 for a half order of fish and chips, which consisted of two of the tiniest pieces of fried fish we've ever seen and perhaps a handful and a half of fries. A full order would have been $16. For lunch? Are you kidding me? Those are insane prices. And the food wasn't even very good. My catfish was mediocre at best and my friend's halibut was like something from Denny's. The fries were completely average, just fries. The owner/chef was there and he is totally obnoxious and annoying, he kept interrupting our order and trying to upsell us. Give me a break. Don't waste your time and money on this place. I've since been told Corbett's Fish house is much better and can't wait to try it. And as my friend pointed out, you can get really good fish and chips at Burgerville for $5.50. Thumbs down to Halibut's.
Pros: none
Cons: mediocre food, annoying owner, prices are too high

Really good fish EVERYTIME and fine music MOST of the time!!! A great place, but hard to find parking.

I give this a 5 star review for it's food only. Yes, it is slightly higher priced than competition but the fish and chips are more than worth it as well as the chowder-their fries are even worth mentioning. I have only been eating here over the last 4 mos. or so and the service has always been adeqate, one gal imparticular (who's name I can't remember-maybe Rachel) quite possibly the friendliest wait person ever. However, I would not recommend eating there if the owner is on site. He is charasmatic and jovial upon first impression but doesn't quit, which ends up turning into loud, overbearing, and annoying. Fish and Chps awesome, service satisfactory, atmoshpeher questionable especially when the owner is present. I am trying to find a place with equally great fish and chips minus the obnoxious owner.
Pros: Fish and Chips
Cons: Loud obnoxious owner

We dined @ Halibuts Friday, 9/21/07. It took over 10 minutes for a wait person to come to our outside table. I actually had to go inside to ask if we were going to be served. They were not busy. We paid $34.00 for two four piece halibut fish & chips plates, a side of slaw, and two canned sodas. No wonder they were @ $800.00 in sales that day. (The Owner & waitress were outside discussing this openly amongst the patrons which I found as a huge turn off.) And, previously I had used my debit card there. I was overcharged by Halibuts. I called to speak to the Owner who actually cursed at the Bank and offered no apology or reimbursement. Lastnight was our last visit to Halibuts. We should have went to Thai Noon.
Pros: Cole Slaw
Cons: Price & Service.

I enjoyed the halibut fish and chips but very overpriced. For $9 I got two very small pieces of fish and not many fries. I left hungry which does speak well of the portions.
Pros: Good Food
Cons: Overpriced

I have gone to Halibuts over the past couple of years because of the great music and it is non smoking. but what keeps me from coming back more often is the bad service and attitude of the waitresses in the bar and the high cost. $15 for fish and chips ( It is fish and chips for God' sake not lobster), and $6 for a cup of chowder, served in a paper cup, and a small cup at that. Not a big bowl like at Moe's served with hot sour dough bread, just oyster crackers. And if they are going to charge those kind of prices you should get enough food to fill you up. Another bothersome thing is that they put the fish on top of the fries so the fries get all the oil that drips off the fish making them undesirable. They dint have salad just slaw. The place is really small and you would think the waitress would come by every few minutes to check if things were OK. We wait for water refills, we get soup with the fish so the fish gets cold while you eat the soup and the empty plate sits in front of you for a long time before it is taken away. And to top it all they are not friendly. The people behind the counter at the take out are great but in the bar it is totally different. You feel your are in a tavern not a nice restaurant bar. Advice, Go to hear great music and have a drink but get your meals some where else.
Pros: Great music choices and decore
Cons: Unfriendly waitresses, food priced too high

I've been on a fish and chips kick lately, so I decided to try this place. I remember reading about it in the Willamette Weekly in their article about trans-fats and how the owner tried switching to a healthier oil, but didn't like the results. Not the best sign, but hey this is fried food. I orderded a full serving of true cod. I wanted the Halibut, but it was $14 or so not including a side of slaw. That is expensive for bar food. The order came in a basket with seasoned fries and tarter sauce. Why don't they use plates? Heck if they want to be traditional, why not use newspaper? The fish was super greasy and the thick batter was falling off the fish before I could eat it. The cod was moist and flavorfull, but the grease factor negated the experience. The slaw was watery and as sweet as KFC slaw. The fries were good, but since they put them under the fish in a small basket, they don't give you many. I went to the Alameda Brewery the following week and their fish and chips was $12.95 for halibut and it came with a mountain of slaw which had more seasoning and was less watery. It wasn't as greasy and seemed to be a little larger portion of fish, but not any more fries than Halibuts. So far, the best I've had around here is the Hawthorne Fish House. They use rice oil and the coating is so dry and flaky and the fish moist and tender. Although they are even more expensive than Halibuts, and no slaw, but they have sweet potatoe fries! On a positive note, I really enjoyed the Wednesday night band in the bar side and the service was good, but the fish doesn't live up to the hype of a place that specializes in fish and chips and it was greasy.
Pros: Good live music.
Cons: Greasy fish and expensive. Coleslaw was extra.
