Wont be seen in this joint again!!
by zombiechic
Definitely wont be going back to On Deck, ever. Terrible service. I am in the service industry, and have never seen such a poorly run restaurant. End of story. I go out to enjoy myself and be entertained, not listen to bartenders bitch about their lives, their previous employers, or anything really. C'mon people, get it together. I can't see how this place has managed to stay afloat. I can say, that if they are still open in six months, it's a miracle. I definitely wont be feeding their dirty mouths though. I hate to say don't bother patronizing this establishment, but there are far better places to be in Portland, why bother.
- Pros: good food
- Cons: terrible service
Learn your math kid...
by Bizgirl
I kind of have to laugh at the employees' review. I am a former employee and have moved on to better things. But you have to get your facts straight. First of all, On Deck has about 11-15 owners. They have had around 7 managers. Your math is wrong on that. If you look at the menu now, it has Asian food, Mexican food, Italian pastas, burgers, Salmon dishes, Oysters, and random bar fried food. It is scattered and people laugh when they get the menu because, though it tastes good, it is obviously not written by someone who understands the clientele. It's a sports bar! It's okay to have fried foods...and by the way...as an employee...I would think you might take the time to notice that about half that menu is still deep fried...so the new chef isn't winning any awards for saving anyone's cholesterol levels. Focus is important and listening to what people want is a good idea....which can't happen when your GM never is on the floor to meet her customers.
I encourage this employee to look at Kelly's work history and the last couple restaurants she "no call no showed" to and ask the servers at Portland City Grill and at Manzanas how great she was...you'll be greeted with a similar laugh to mine. Or anger, which I have also experienced. And as far as I've heard, Kelly is the only one fired. I think Juan is still there. But you'd know that if you paid attention to facts and not your emotions on this. I take it you are probably not one of the better employees at On Deck that she promoted after she fired all the ones that actually gave a sh*t at the restaurant...and now they are coming back to give a sh*t again and that scares you to death.
Use your head and look at the numbers. Cause there aren't that many coming in there since Kelly took over. Good luck.
- Pros: Beautiful location
- Cons: Service

great place to be ignored
by brandoncf
since tonight was monday night football(preseason) i decided to give on deck a shot. i have lived in the pearl district in portland for three months. sat at the bar for ten minutes. the bartender was working on the register. never looked back or around once. two servers were also behind the bar but they both passed by me twice looking past me as if to say," you're not my responsibility." after 10 minutes of being ignored i realized why this place with outdoor seating is totally dead on a monday when it's 72 degrees. i just left, and i guarantee you no one noticed.
- Pros: it's close to where i live.
- Cons: service.
Great Food and Service
by Jenniferandethan
I went to try the On Deck this past Saturday. We live in the neighborhood and we have been there before with horrible results. A lot of our neighbors have been talking and saying that The On Deck has been making some changes. There is a new GM and Chef so we thought OK one more time. ( Since we live across the street ) We were blown off our feet. The menu has grown and the service great. The crab and artichoke dip is to die for. We did meet the new GM and she is very intuitive with what the restaurant needs. Kelly has really taken the On Deck up to a level that it needed. She stated that they still are working on improving service, but I thought it was good. She also was very open to any ideas that we might have. Ya Kelly you are on the correct path. We will be back. Oh one more thing you can take your dog on the deck and they will pamper him.
- Pros: Best Service

I never review things online but after today I had to! The servers fought INFRONT of me about who would have to take my order since they were both so busy. Then after twenty minutes I had to go up to the bar to have them pour my beer and glass of wine (while the tickets just sat there waiting). When our server walked by to take someone else their drink we asked how much longer for food. (We were at 40+ minutes) The server said he didn't know but it wasn't his fault since he put our order in. We then just asked him to check since it had been awhile and he then came back with "I'm NOT the one cooking it!". I can't believe that this guy thinks he's getting a tip at all at this point! Customer service means you say I'm not sure and I'll check on that! After this I go in and talk to the manager. He is nice and says he'll come and talk with us after the meal. We wait for about 15 minutes after we are done eating, he comes out, and his excuse is that "upper management won't allow him to staff accordingly and that there isn't enough money to do this!" NEVER tell a customer that. He then states that "we've gotten over 200 resumes in the last 4 days" so things should be better soon! WHAT?!?!?! DO NOT waste your time on this place, it was by far the worst service ever, my food didn't even come out as ordered but there was never a server around to correct it. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not give your money to this company. Guys- don't take your ladies out to this place just cause it has a cool roof deck, it's NOT worth the hassle!
LOOKS LIKE ON DECK GOT ANOTHER FRIEND TO WRITE A POSITIVE REVIEW
by speedyg
This place is notorious for overpriced food and lousy service. But hey, it's on a roof, so how cool is that? And why is it that as soon as a couple of bad reviews come in that a bunch of people like the one below start in with how unfair all the people who gave a negative review are? These are people who had a lousy time, or, in my case discovered how crummy a neighbor this business is. The guy below hasn't even been there but gives five stars. The real story? It's a mediocre sports bar with a bunch of TVs. At least it appears they've been trying to be a decent neighbor lately, which is appreciated.
SHUT UP ALREADY

I haven't been to this restaurant yet, but will be trying it out soon. After reading all the reviews I had to post something myself. Listen, if you have something REAL to complain about then great, but everyone is whining about rediculous stuff!! Every single restaurant that I have ever been to in my life (including many from several states of the great USA as well as hundreds from several other countries) has slow days, bad days, days that things just don't want to come together smoothly. In fact, every single person I have ever known has had days like these and unless you are from another world, I would guess everyone who has posted on here has had a similar day if not many. Why would you want to attact a person or a business because of something that you yourself have experienced several times? It only shows you as being a snob and nobody will ever take you seriously when you have something real to complain about. I own a cleaning business in the Portland area and am also a teacher and so I am around different kinds of people all the time. I have learned that some people just get off on being mean and actually enjoy putting others down. I cannot imagine a person enjoying hatred so much, but some do. Clearly it is these people who are posting here and I would watch out if I were you, because EVERYONE gets back what they put out and some of you have some really terrible things coming back your way!!!!!!! I want to say to the owners of this restaurant that I am sorry you have been the victim of such negativity, but hang in there. It's not so bad to lose customers of these sorts and I have no doubt that you are keeping the good ones!
BEAUTIFUL VIEW NICE STAFF GOOD SERVICE!

I was there on a very busy night for Monday night football!!! Enjoyed watching the game outside!!Lots of room! It was a very enjoyable experience and will be back! The service was very prompt. The prices for happy hour food and drinks was very reasonable.Overall great experience and would recommend.
- Pros: great view ,good happy hour prices
- Cons: Parking
Prices did go way!
by fogbobhorn
The prices went way up last year and the portions of the food got much smaller. Was a good value, in fact we spent almost every Sunday there the year before last but last year we changed places mid-year and have not been back. Last year almost 3/4 of the staff quit because of the power crazed manager. I love the way the manager responded to the last review, rude and insulting. That is just the kind of person he is.
I was on Citysearch looking for a place to spend this Sunday and see the games but when I read the comment from the manager I just had to write.
Oh and you can never hear the games they never have any games loud enough to hear over the normal bar noise.
Yes the drinks are highly priced for a sports bar but the food is worse.
- Pros: Seating not bad. Service was always good.
- Cons: Prices for food and drink, the manager.
