Efficient no nonsense service with excellent food
5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

I make a point to eat at the Savoy while I'm in town. I like the dark, intimate atmosphere, the efficient, no nonsense staff and the food is always satisfying and tasty. I showed up at 7:15pm with no reservation and was able to take my pick of tables. I sat at the third table in, along the outside wall, facing the street window so that I could watch the rain and people coming in. I ordered a bottle of red wine (Chateau Les Amoureuses 2005), which was excellent. I started with a mushroom bruschetta, moved on to black cod & mussels, and finished with warm rhubarb/strawberry pie a la mode. The bruschetta was served without any special fanfare; sautéed mushrooms and onions on a slice of French bread on a bed of two fresh lettuce leaves. It was slight salty (to my taste) but the salt had a wonderful flavor that combined well with the wine. The cod & mussels, which sat in a buttery herb sauce, arrived in a timely manner. I removed all the mussels from their shells first so that the tender meat could bath in the sauce. The fish and mussels combination was delicious. Two crisp slices of garlic toast help me compose each bite. The rhubarb/strawberry pie had a crumble topping and delicate crust that was a perfect ending to the meal. The entire meal, including the bottle of wine cost $54 - not bad for a very satisfying dinner. When I arrived, most of the existing diners were pairs of women sharing a bottle of wine and an appetizer. One table began with two women and grew to six over the hour and a quarter I was there. The staff accommodated each newcomer easily, taking and delivering late orders without concern. Later, at another table, two men joined two women who had occupied the aisle seats. The guys literally shoved the women to wall seats, acting as if they were taking over the table. I remember thinking that these guys were cretins. All in all, it was a very satisfying evening. I highly recommend the Savoy.
