Made my trip to Portland!

by SquirrelLover

A friend had recommended that I check out the art-centric space and atmosphere - so I looked it up online and found a 5 star recommendation on the burgers. I must admit, the review was correct - great homemade ketchup and burgers. Their bartender, Donald, was attentive and friendly - the owner even engaged me in conversation. This place is great! Oh - AND they have their own variety of special house-infused spirits! YUM!

  • Pros: Open late, good food, great service.
  • Cons: None

This place is a winner!!!!!!

by lilbro1967

This is the best little place to go and have a awesome meal. I have been several time when I get to Portland . I will always go there. I had this spicy chicken vidulese dish, Out Of This World , (I am sorry about any spelling errors) I have always enjoyed the food there and will return anytime that I can. So to you very small and unhappy people that just want to complain about anything and everything ,go find some other hole to crawl into. For me though, "Thank You to The Staff of Voleur...Keep the Great Food Coming!!!".

  • Pros: Great People, Food, Service...
  • Cons: Parking . That Downtown for You

I won't be going back

by belmontlover

I went with a friend to celebrate her birthday and was really disappointed with this place. The food was overpriced and the service was horrible. They have done away with their happy hour on Saturday and everything else on their menu has increased by atleast a buck (if you look at the menu link on this site). I just ordered a side of fries ($4.00) They were bland with not nearly enough dipping sauce - a total jip for $4. I sampled the mac & cheese and it was nice and creamy, but definitely not worth the cost of $8.00. One couple in our party ordered the spicy hummus ($7.00) and I was kind of shocked to see this came with 3 pieces of toasted bread and a couple veggies - another rip-off in my opinion. The server was rude and didn't even bother to take my drink order. He also forgot to place the order for one of my friend's meals. We went and got ourselves our own pitchers of water since he did not even bother to check on us and we were thirsty. And mind you, this was at 5p.m. and pretty empty - maybe 4 parties total inside and out. Needless to say I won't be going back to this place again.

I'm in love

by naomisaccount

Wow! Voleur is fabulous! I'm surprised about the 'homophobic' review because I swear I felt some opposite vibes from the staff and they were swarmed with people getting ready for the Pride March. Anyhow, very attentive and skilled staff, which is extremely important to me. The bartender makes a mean mixed drink, even if you have no idea what you want. The infused liquors are A-MA-ZING! And they're not as spendy as I would expect them to be. The food (smoky mozarella pasta-wow!) was a favorite in our group. The portions were quite large (everyone had a take-home box) and even I, who am a fairly accomplished cook, could barely improve on anything. I would have added red pepper flakes, but then I like it spicy. The music was squee-worthy and the ambiance lovely. What with wait-staff calling me by name within a short time, the out-of-this-world liquor and the fantastic food, I can't wait to find an excuse to return. I also cannot imagine why they're not always packed but I'm thankful they're still open while not becoming another Roxy or Montage.

Their late hours make it a great spot to head after a late night.

  • Pros: Service, menu, staff

Three words: Chicken. Fried. Steak.

by thekilted1

Best late nite dining hands down. Awesome staff. I'm hesitant to write a review because I don't want it to get too popular and go downhill (Montage, anyone?).

But they deserve all the accolades I could shower on them.

The staff goes out of their way to make everything about your visit pleasant.

You have not lived until you have tried the chicken fried steak at Voleur.

  • Pros: Excellent food and service.

A lovely place to spend a few hours!

by noisyneighbors

Just got back from a late night dinner at Voleur that was so wonderful I feel I have to gush. Ive had drinks here a few times before, and the atmosphere was so wonderful I knew i'd have to come back for dinner some night. I finally made it back tonight and had a wonderful meal. The spot is just beautiful: an old, old building with high ceilings, subtle lighting and classy decor without that slightly creepy homogenized Mcminnimins feel. The bartender/waitress was sweet and attentive without being annoying, and she offered great food suggestions. The 'Oregonzla' salad i ordered was wonderful: walnuts, gorgonzola cheese and thin-cut green apples over mixed greens w/ a pomegranate dressing that was not too sweet and not too vinegary. My boyfriend had a salmon entree that was cooked perfectly and come with a pretty generous helping of sides. We split a bowl of potato soup (not bad but nothing special!) and a plate of *super* tasty fries that came with blueberry habanero ketchup- so good, but we wished the small serving of ketchup was alittle bigger. The drinks at Voleur are great, they have an extensive list of infused vodkas, tequila, bourbons and gins. The hot toddy made with fig-walnut bourbon, lemon, honey and spices I had was delicious and my boyfriend loved his hot pepper tequila margarita (why he chose a margarita in the middle of winter is beyond me, but he said it was great). I cant wait to go back and try more!

  • Pros: wonderful ambience, an exciting menu, infused liquo cocktails
  • Cons: none!

Pretty good place

by nam24

I've been looking forward to going here for quite awhile. I went with a friend at 7pm on a Saturday night and we were the only people there! I'm not really sure why, but that always makes me think something sketchy is going on. The service was VERY friendly and attentive- no problems there.

You should note that the menu on the website is not actually what you can find at the restaurant. I wanted the meatloaf, but it wasn't on the menu, so I had a balsamic glazed salmon with grilled vegetables and horseradish and garlic mashed potatoes. The salmon was really really good, but the grilled vegetables were tough and overcooked. The potatoes were great though, and I don't even like horseradish that much! However, for the size of portion they gave me, I wouldn't recommend it for the $16.00 I paid. It was tiny! I left the restaurant hungry. My friend, on the other hand, ordered a buffalo burger for $9.00 and it turned out to be enormous and delicious and she couldn't finish it all. So there seems to be a bit of descrepancy between what you pay for and what you get. I was hungry for dessert, but I opted against it as I'd already spent $16 on a tiny meal.

The fun part is that the restaurant is across the street from the Portland Fire Department, so you can sit and watch the nice firemen play baseball in the parking lot on a slow Saturday night. Yum yum!

  • Pros: Good parking and service
  • Cons: disappointing portions for the price on SOME menu items

Best All-Time Place to Meet and Eat (and Drink!)

by annie_mouse

I've been stopping in at Voleur for dining, visiting, drinking, joining friends, and bringing guests for the past two years. I was horrified to see someone characterize one of Portland's best-kept secret hideaways as "homophobic." On the contrary, all sorts of people congregate at Voleur, their major commonality being a desire to enjoy good times and good company and good food. There is definitely no phobia of any type here, be you young or old, tattooed or not, straight or gay. Welcoming of diversity is what Voleur is. Even the cultural and social variety of the staff itself bespeaks this philosophy.

This definitely is not a "fast food" place (although you can get a GREAT burger here).

  • Pros: Location, Ambience, Parking, Late-night Availability, Great Waiters
  • Cons: None

Homophobic - worst customer service

by pdxnative77

Homophobic -

I walked in on a Saturday night. The place was dead. The servers were all outside smoking. They tried to take my order as I was standing outside looking at the menu. I heard them snickering about the way I was dressed, as I am a bit metro and take care in the way I dress, as do my three friends, they were saying we were in the wrong place as it wasn't a gay bar. do not ever go here. bigotry should not be supported.

  • Pros: nobody ever goes here
  • Cons: worst wait staff ever
