Tried their BBQ chicken sandwich at the Spring Beer Fest, was not impressed
by abw73 at Citysearch
The food court at the Spring Beer Fest this past weekend was small. Only about 5 vendors. I finally settled on Big Kahuna, even though I'm not a huge BBQ fan. I recall two outsiders coming up to me and saying how great the food is. One particular guy said he was a BBQ judge and Big Kahuna was the best thing ever. So I settled on the chicken sandwich. To say I was unimpressed is a big understatement. First, it was very small. I got a small chicken breast on a small bun, no lettuce, pickles, nothing. There was a fair chunk of fat on it too. I expected that to be trimmed off. I was also expecting to find it well barbecued, but no such luck, it looked like they just threw it on the grille for a few minutes. I could have done a better job. It wasn't hot, just luke warm. First impression is everything. Not much flavor, didn't give me the impression of BBQ, and the portion was not worth it. I can say with no doubt in my mind, I will never go back.
- Pros: It was cheap
- Cons: Luke warm, did not get the impression of BBQ, little flavor, very small portion
Big Kahunas = Big Dissapointment

I have been to Big Kahunas twice and left both times very unimpressed. I have to start by saying I cannot say anything about the catering because I have only been to the restaurant. I hate to put down a business in my neighborhood (St. Johns) but I also feel the need to share my personal experience.
To start off with the lady who took my order seemed negative and was not helpful when I asked sincerly what dishes are the peoples favorite and which meats have won awards. Seemed to be annoyed at the questions.
The first time I got the pulled pork and it was sort of watery and luke warm and did not have much flavor, particularily lacking the smoked flavor. The beans that came with the meal tasted exactly like heinz beans out of a can (Not accusing anyone.... just comparing). As for the sauce it is not my preference but I appreciate that it is something different. My wife just got a couple sides (due to the fact that she is a semi vegetarian) and did not like her food.
Because I dont like to write off a place after one visit I went back with my buddy a month later. For the record the person serving me this time was better. I got the pork ribs and again I was not impressed. They were "falling off the bone" but the meat again lacked the smokey flavor or any flavor for that matter and again were kind of watery. My friend and I left disatisfied with nothing to show but a lighter wallet and a vow to not return to this BBQ restarurant. I love BBQ and I really wish this place lived up to its "award winning" reputation but I will have to wait for quality BBQ in St. Johns.
- Pros: Parking Lot, Original Concept, Location
- Cons: Food, Service
