The set up is very relaxing, very small place though. I also enjoyed how the Djs are set up where you can actually see them in action, learn how they cue and mix and also even get to talk to them,Id actually made friends with one of them and have gotten a couple gigs. This place is more for beginner DJs but I love it the prices are cheap to get in,we got in free. The drinks are expensive though we had to go Dirty Duck which is next door for our drinks...

This place has a pretty warm, cosy & inviting atmosphere - good selection of beers/wine, nice bartenders and always some good DJ spinning or playing some really cool live music. They need to update their listing though - they are open on wednesday and thursday nights too. Looks like they want to keep it a secret or something.
Pros: Warm, inviting, good music
Cons: We can't come there if we don't know that its open wed/thu!

I recently moved to oldtown & decided to go here on saturday night after following some recommendations. It took me a while to find it & could not believe that there was a club inside the office building. However, when I entered the basement, I felt like I was transported out of Portland. The place is beautiful & the wine excellent & inexpensive. The DJ was mind-blowing & the sound quality was the nicest I've heard around here. There is no smoking allowed - a refreshingly welcome concept. Now that I've found it, I'll be back!
Pros: Excellent sound, beautiful space & good wine
Cons: Need a bigger sign outside

I love this place. I am a San francisco Transplant and have been looking for a dance hangout and this is as close as you're gonna get it in portland. The Dj's play an amazingly eclectic selection of music. You can get your groove on here as you will be sharing the dance floor with the moon beam hippy, the classy ballerina, the hipster and the head bopper. The selection of beers is quite good, try that double chocolate one. One minus is that the Dj's screw up transitions very often and last time I went there they were projecting a weird grossout nature video on the wall. The big plus is that separation between dance area and lounge. You can bring the beer drinking friend's without making them feel like they HAVE to dance.
Pros: Free entry, cozy lounge, nice wine and beers.
Cons: lighting in dance room.

I went there for live bossanova concert recently. The venue is lovely, very cozy atmosphere & the sound was excellent. I'm from Brazil & it is rare to hear such great music in an intimate & nice setting. Even the DJ after that was very good. He was mixing everything from joão gilberto to gotan project to arabic music and I couldn't stop dancing! I'll be back for more Xingu.
Pros: Very lovely ambience & great variety of beer
Cons: bar got crowded too much

Whats so cool about Pi-Rem is that its such a kick-back lounge with good music, a variety of beverages, a lounge atmosphere, a side room w/a kick @#% sound system that features DJs spinning a variety of musical styles, people dancing, and an ongoing art exhibition (to say the least) for all to enjoy. On of the best things about it is that everyone has good energy about them. So you don't have to worry about a velvet rope or a dictatorship requirement to get into the venue (Ohh..the guys have to wear tight clothes from blah blah...and the girls got to look like Jenna Jamison) No, this isn't a MTV Paris Hilton type vibe. You and your friends are the party. Come as you are to enhance the vibe. Not take away from it. Coming from New York City (and I have experienced the most famous venues to underground hole in the wall password type functions, the experience Pi-Rem was a nice break and authentic. Now I hope Pi-Rem doesn't get toooooo popular and crowded because the size and intimacy are a factor in its success. And the fact that they are only open on the weekends means that this place is quality. So you look forward to experiencing it. I'll be back again with friends.
Pros: Pi-Rem delivers a comfortable venue to start or end the night. Comfortable atmosphere. Deep variety of beer. Nice variety of people.
Cons: No food. But you can't have everything!

We heard about this place through a friend back east. Reminds me a lot of places like you'd find in NYC. Hip, hard to find (they don't have a sign up & its in the basement), sweet decor, great art on the walls, random art books scattered around & some awesome tunes. It looks like the portland version of the eighteenth street lounge - bunch of comfy couches, exotic furniture, great music - minus the pretense.
Pros: Great music, very chill, nice decor
Cons: Open only on weekends

Hip late-night lounge with modern beats and a great selection of international beers. Rotating local art works add flavor to the atmosphere. Relaxing late-night downtown spot to chill out.
Pros: Affordable price; great beer selection
Cons: Only open during weekends
