Fantastic neighborhood bakery & coffee shop

by Tom Ricciardi

The staff is wonderful, and the pastries are terrific. I love coming here with my daughter, there are lots of kids every day and the layout is really conducive to children. Restrooms are always clean. They make a great latte -- try the Galottes!!

I have no idea what all the complaining is about with respect to service. Portland does have it's share of bitter rotten customers I guess...

  • Pros: Great pastries, wonderful friendly staff, great service
  • Cons: No chocolate :-)

rustic, simple fare

by seebothsides

I appreciate the local, simple fare and like to support small business. That said, I see the reviews complaining about the service. However I've witnessed some very high maintenance clientele in this place who seem oblivious to the demands being placed on the staff; also, as a former service worker I know that often times staff isn't the most gracious when they aren't treated very well by their employers-- nothing specific here but people generally try to do their best-- give 'em a break!

  • Pros: simple, neighborhood business
  • Cons: about the service

It's always disappointing

by ScooterGirl

I enjoyed a wonderful salami sandwich for lunch. Rich with ingredients and a lovely fresh bean salad. The next day I returned and ordered the same item to go. The sandwich was on a badly burned baquette (completely black on the bottom), had little meat on it and the salad was missing. When I asked, here's what they said. 1. "Oh, you don't like your bread burnt? It's the last one we had, so we had to use it." 2. " We can't include the salad in take-out orders because it would cost us too much." No apology. No nothing. They treated me like it was an inconvenience to talk to.me.

What a surprise to know that they think it's ok to treat take-out customers different and serve an inferior lunch and STILL CHARGE THE SAME AMOUNT. I guess they were hoping I wouldn't notice until I got home and would just accept it.

HORRBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!!

I will boycott them going forward. And tell my friend.

  • Cons: Horribly inconsistent

Tasty pastries but less than friendly staff

by vgl

I live a few blocks away from this bakery and although the pastries are very tasty, the service leaves little to be desired and the interior decor is less than appealing versus the potential to be cozy and inviting. The few times I have been in there, the ladies behind the counter have not been very friendly and even seemed annoyed if I took too long to choose something, which for me is very crucial as to whether I return to a place. I'd rather drive a few miles to La Petite Provence on Alberta for friendly service, wonderful atmosphere and of course delicious and reasonably priced pastries. I am still hoping that Fleur de Lis improves its atmosphere, covers up all the supplies in the back of the place and enlarge their pastry display area and smile more because I would rather support neighborhood businesses.

  • Pros: Tasty Pastries
  • Cons: Service poor, little ambience, barren pastry shelves towards end of day

Good Pastry, Indifferent Staff

by KarlaPDX

Pastry quite good. The fennel scones are delicious--I just wish there were more than two bites to them! The apple concoctions are super, too, as are the Cinnamon rolls. now the bad part. The service is poor. The younger staff range from delightful to fairly good, but the older staff are very unfriendly. You'd think they were working in McDonald's. This is particularly true around 2PM, which is one hour before closing--they seem unhappy that the customer is preventing them from cleaning up and getting out at 3PM on the dot.

Also, the bakery is patronized by a lot of younger families with small children. That's nice in some ways but the acoustics are poor (concrete floor, all-glass walls) and so the children are quite noisy, and it can be hard to read or have a conversation. All in all, a very positive contribution to the Hollywood/Grant Park area, but if it were quieter and had friendlier service, I'd give it another star.

Owners, you might consider using heavy-cloth window coverings and even getting an outdoor, washable carpet for the dining area. Also, the busing area is unappealing, and the area behind the empty magazine display area is ugly and could be concealed with an attractive cloth screen. The display area itself is also a mess some of the time, and perhaps it should be converted to a flat-topped counter with barstools, or with nice vases and plants.

  • Pros: Pastry and bread are truly delicious
  • Cons: Staff can be unfriendly, loud, interior not very appealing

Great food, counter service.

by Hedy111

I came here for the second time today, and loved it. It was pretty busy this morning, but the staff seemed to be handling the clientele efficiently. I received my sandwich before I left the counter, and my tea was ready in five minutes. Don't expect full restaurant service here, as they have counter service only, but there were two ladies working up front who were VERY friendly.

The only thing that I found a little strange was one of them seemed a little annoyed that their tea cost so much. But they do serve Foxfire, which is a VERY high quality tea, that I serve at home when I can find it in retail shops.

The food was very good. I had a breakfast sandwich that featured a french omelette with goat cheese, roasted peppers, and onions. Later, I had a ginger sugar cookie. Not only was this cookie absolutely beautiful, but it went perfectly with my tea, and was probably the best ginger cookie I'd had in a LONG time. Expect wonderful, high-quality pastries when you come here. This is what keeps people coming back. There were some amazing-looking turnovers in the case that I didn't try this time, but plan to very soon!

Worth the counter-only service.

  • Pros: Pastries like you would find in a sweet little french patisserie, lovely lunch fare.
  • Cons: Counter service only, which doesn't really qualify as a con for me...

Horrible, rude service

by rjay123

My wife and I just returned from this place. We have walked past it often and always wanted to stop in. The service here could not have been any worse. When we arrived there were not any other customers in line. I said "hello" to her and she looked at me like I was a GIANT walking inconvenience to her. She was not helpful at all in identifying the types of unmarked pasteries behind the glass. My wife and I were thrown back at how rude she was to us for NO reason at all.

It is a shame that we will not return due to the service, as the pasteries were light, flaky and deliceous.

  • Pros: Good pastery
  • Cons: Horrible service. Made to feel that you are NOT welcome

Very good pastry, very bad service

by perskeptic

Delicious pastry. Really bad service. They need to get two registers. Some of the counter help really don't have a clue on how to help people. But, delicious pastry.

  • Pros: Like I said I like the pastry alot
  • Cons: I hate the service

Dee-lish!

by amynishiki

I've been going to Fleur de Lis since it opened. Everything is scrumptious. Greg always uses fresh produce, so the pastry selection is always changing (pear-quince danish was a recent fave). A couple of weeks ago he did potato donuts--as the daughter of an Irish cop, I was all over those! I also recommend any of the "crostadas"; his crusts are amazing.

For lunch, I highly recommend the pork loin sandwich.

The ambiance is not the best, but I'm usually outside. The patio is covered, and set away from the street, which I appreciate.

Service can be slow on weekend mornings; it would help if they had 2 registers going. But so worth the wait!

  • Pros: food, family business
  • Cons: ambiance

Best multigrain bread in town

by eileen8

This is a lovely little place to which I've taken out-of-town visitors, and they've been pleased. The multigrain loaf is possibly my favorite bread in Portland. Service is friendly and helpful. I have had several soups (with bread) here for a very quick and easy lunch. It's fun to watch parents and children eating at tables that are located nearly precisely where the Children's Section of the old Hollywood Library used to be. The pastries are lovely as well. Great value.

  • Pros: Breads and soups are wonderful. It's in the old Hollywood Library!
  • Cons: none
