great bar/great music
by baphelps32
I have been coming to The Crown Room for quite a while. The bar staff is great and they serve quality drinks. The sound system will rocks you away and the music bumps. I have read the other reviews and I have to disagree with one thing in particular. The Security is some of the best in Portland. I have seen these guys deal with many situations and they always do the right thing. They have a hard job to do and they do it well. Before you judge security try and figure out why they are in the situation in the first place. Some people can't behave when they drink and you only know half the story. They have saved me from a drunk trying to fight me because i wanted him to leave my girlfriend alone. The new game room is a great addition to the bar. I recommend this bar to anyone who wants to have fun and can act like a grown up. leave your drama at the door and come have fun.
- Pros: fantastic staff, great drinks, great sound
- Cons: none
WARNING* bouncer is a psycho
by CSMobileUser
One bouncer with double pierced ears is a psycho. He assaulted a women and challenged her to fight like a man. That bouncer is so outrageous & unhinged he'll be in jail soon enough. The owner better step up. Some of the other bouncers were relatively professional but that one guy is crazy. See other reviews on this board. CrownRoom is off limits until they hire proffessional security

This ritzy hangout is an old fashioned throw back but modernly twisted with crunchy DJ sets.
Why all the hype?
by Shiehk
After reading such great reviews, my friends and I decided to check it out last weekend. Not what we were expecting. The drinks were great, the food was okay, the servers were outstanding... but that was about it. The bouncers were kinda weird, a little pushy. But I definitly won't go back. Boring, no excitement. Needs to be updated to even compete with the other bars in the area.
- Pros: Great drinks
- Cons: Atmosphere, outdated
watch out for the security in the scarf!
by vicharalim
It was a great place, the music was awesome and the drinks were perfect. we came in a big group and i reserved tables, everyone had a good time. until we were trying to get everyone together so we can leave.. im standing there with a friend of mind.. when i got pushed out of the way ( 5'3 little girl).. the security in the scarf tackled my friend from the back.. then he got taken out.. we felt like we got singled it out quite a bit.. we spend a lot of money that.. then another security guard gave me a good open hand to the jaw.. i dont know why. the owner was nice and very respectful. he apologized to me for what happened.. but...... my warning.. watch out for the skinny security with the retractable mase at this belt and his flying scarf!. put a beanie on him and call him a lawn gnome.. i got checked out and now have TMJD. thanks! lol.. other then that... it was pretty fly!
i had pretty high standards for this place.. and yea a little dissapointing. but everyone has their own experiences and opinions.
- Pros: music, and drinks
- Cons: getting singled out.
Awesome lounge
by maccuardi
The Crown Room is a great addition to the Chinatown area, even though it is quickly becoming not a Chinatown. The interior of The Crown Room looks great, like an awesome 70's lounge with all kinds of cushy seats and such. If you go there ask for Kent and request the El Chupacabra shot, it is a great drink!
- Pros: Great atmosphere and service
- Cons: A little too open
Best New Club in Old Town
by explodingj
Man, I love this place. I?ve been going to the Crown Room since it opened. The drinks and food are excellent and the service is impeccable. The best part is the atmosphere. The Crown Room evokes class from a bygone era. The big intimate booths are perfect for happy hour socializing with coworkers, or for sinking into later at night when the DJs take over and the dance floor is pumping. Another bonus is that the Crown Room is huge. It easily accommodates a lot of people without ever feeling too crowded. Old Town really needed a classy alternative to some of the other clubs in the area, and the Crown Rooms is definitely it.
- Pros: Intimate & Spacious, Good DJs, Awesome Drinks
- Cons: None To Speak Of
Up and Coming
by seawoodbrown
I played a show at the Crown last Thursday. I can't wait to come back. The food, staff and service were all in good standing. I look forward to seeing this venue gain a space alongside some of Portland's more stylish rooms. The owner, Luis, was very open to suggestions and quite a nice cat. I look forward to a return engagement. Barry Hampton of the Triple Grip/Julian's Ride.
I read mixed reviews
by happy2bme9
Okay, so I read the reviews on the Crown Room yesterday before deciding to check it out myself. First of all it is a bit hard to find. No lit up outdoor signage (though for future reference they are next door to the Magic Gardens and directly across from Republic Cafe) so I drove right by on my first time through. Upon walking into the joint, I was surprised at how clean it was. Yeah, so the place looks like it's still got the original booths and decor from the 70's it was in great condition and definitely lent a great 'lounging' feel.
I went to check out the band who was doing a Prince review. After finally getting the kinks worked out with the sound, they rocked the house! Though there really isn't a dance floor, that didn't stop the smallish crowd from getting up and groovin' to the tunes. The band had high energy and definitely played to the crowd, even calling up a rapper (Controversy???) to get up on the stage for a couple of tunes.
My friend and I had the Hummus plate and the Buffalo wings. Though I thought the $7 price for each was a bit on the high side, both plates came with plenty of food. The wings were plentiful and came with carrot and celery sticks. The Hummus plate came with slew of kalamata olives and peppers as well as a couple of dolmas. I would definitely recommend the food.
Our bartender was Nick and I thought he did a fabulous job...friendly, efficient and informative.
Overall, a great place that I will most certainly visit again - especially if they keep having great music like last night.
- Pros: small crowd, good food, great band
- Cons: parking, kind of hard to find
The website is misleading, but the drinks were good
by vla1030
After reading the reviews on citysearch and checking the website I decided that this place would be a great place for hosting a little black dress gathering with my friends for cocktails. The website showed the type of trendy environment we were looking for full of people in a martini bar sort of setting. When we arrived we were greeted with an extremely dark 70s lounge setting complete with crescent booths and wooden pews. (The pews were not comfortable) I'm rating this lower because the atmosphere wasn't as described, the music had no theme (I'm assuming they were just playing personal cds) and other than my friends the place was empty until around 11pm.
That said, the drinks were wonderful, the appetizers delicious, and the service was outstanding. If you are looking to go somewhere to go for a drink and conversation amongst your group this is as good of a place as anywhere. If you are looking for a night out with your friends in a busy/trendy atmosphere this is not your place we were looking for that.
- Pros: Cocktail List
- Cons: Atmosphere, Lighting
