The phone is still working althought it goes unanswered and when we tried to stop in for dinner last night we found it to be closed with a "For Lease" sign in the window.

Grand opening

Since the reopening this place is the BEST. Excellent food and friendly workers. The place itself is an adventure.
- Pros: Its the best place I've been to in a long time
Great place for fine Dining with Amazing Food!!!
by GScott
This is one of Portlands best kept secrets! The food here was so flavorful and visually appealing. The inside was off of something you would see in NY. They have private booths with dimming lights to set the mood. The also have large booths for business gatherings. I have not found another place that can compare to this establishment. I was impressed by the staff and even had an opportunity to meet the Chef! I was completely swept off my feet by this place and will make sure to refer everyone I come across.
- Pros: Great Food ,Just Remodeled, Off the Chart Atmosphere
- Cons: A little hard to find
Wonderful food & Great Service!
by tatseofpdx
The food the is simply amazing, and a great spot to grab a few cocktails before heading out. I was most impressed with the friendly and attentive staff and even the chef came out to see if everything was alright. I run a business, and think it's a great place to take clients for lunch. No frills, no annoying music, just great food and service!
- Pros: location, inexpensive, great menu
- Cons: not a big beer selection
Owner doesn't pay his help
by eyeconart
There's actually a very good reason why Rudy is in the kitchen, dining room and bar. I happen to know not one, but 3 waiter/bartenders (plus a cook) that he consistently stiffed (for months on end) before they finally walked out. He has no appreciation for the time and commitment that they gave to get his restaurant started. As such, R Palate deserves to go under.... Rudy's karma is up! If you care about sustaining retaurants that pay their staff, don't patronize this loser!
- Pros: nice location?
- Cons: too focused on happy hour crowd
Not good

I had the bacon wrapped dates ( so - so ) hard to screw that up. Scallops sucked. Beer selection sucked.
Amazing "Iron Chef"-like food at a great price
by elsmom
The food here is amazing - you know, expertly crafted meals with that professional flair - perfectly cooked meat, delicious reduction sauces, and professional plating. You'd think you were at a seriously expensive restaurant but when you get the bill you will be so suprised at how little it all cost. Definitely one of my new favorite restaurants in Portland. Great date place. Wait staff is friendly and the atmosphere is unique - definitely not stuffy or fancy.
- Pros: great food, great price
- Cons: not very well-designed space - seems like they could do a lot more with the interior
Good eats at great prices!

This place is my new spot! i don't go out to eat in portland, unless i'm coming here. The great food and atmosphere make this spot a must eat. Food quality and appearance make my taste buds buzz, and im always impressed by trying something new! I invite all my friends and they agree. This place is headed for greatness! Good job.
- Pros: Great tasting food and a the best happy hour!
- Cons: When busy a little slow, but well worth the wait?
Gross and unfriendly

I was so happy when I found this place; I had read about it on here and remembered that people were raving about it. What better time to try than before First Thursday and not wanting to walk all the way to the Roxy. I wanted so badly to like this place, long happy hour, not a wallet buster and all but three blocks to my work.
The coolest thing about the R Palate is that you could draw on the tables with chalk. The drinks were just flat out bad. How do you make a Tequila sunrise with no grenadine and then run out of both cherries and oranges? The food was almost inedible, it?s hard to mess up fries, but the brie wasn?t warm and the spicy macaroni was one of the worst things I have ever tasted. Once it was sent back we were treated like dirt and it was obvious the snooty waitress just wanted us gone. We had to ask her to remove the macaroni from the bill because none of us were willing to take it home.
Skip this place, the happy hour at Jakes is 100 times better.
- Pros: location, price, chalk tables
- Cons: food, waitress, drinks
One of the best chefs in Portland!
by vipaka
Searching for the most part in vain for food that would remind me of cuisine in Europe, I had given up the search, when I heard a description of a take out sandwich a friend of mine had gotten from R Palate. I sought the place out. My first meal there I sampled the "bacon-wrapped oysters in caper lemon cream sauce, the bacon wrapped medjool dates, the beggar's purse and several other delicacies prepared by Chef Rudy. I had at last found the food I had sought!
The area near the restaurant is under construction, or destruction, which has been distracting. The bldg is very old and dark inside, The ambience leaves a little to be desired. The music is sometimes raucous and distracting, and too loud. The service can be spotty, but only inadvertantly. The personnel are nice and as helpful as possible.
The food can overcome any drawbacks.
- Pros: exquisite cuisine; personable staff
- Cons: external conditions; distracting atmosphere.
