User Reviews for Aveda Institute

I read these reviews before I went to the Aveda institute to get a haircut and decided to take my chances but was pleasantly suprised. I paid only 14 and got a 7 out of 10 haircut. The girl was nice and seemed new but she still did a good job. She called the instructor over and he did the fine cut work, which probably takes more years to master, but I thought the whole process was great. As for the price, you can't beat it. I am going for highlights on Sat and will write another review soon
Pros: Price, communication, Serivce
Cons: they are students

I went in for a cut and color. The stylist somehow pulled my hair painfully through the cut and color. She didn't want to listen to my views on my hair (I have a style that is basically a bob with a shorter layer at bottom. She said that I needed to have more layers and she sort of barked that in my ear as though she was angry with me. The haircut didn't turn out too bad (I didn't go home and cry) although she did put layers in that I asked not to have. When it came to the color, I asked to see a swatch and told her what color I wanted. She never showed me the swatch and just stated coloring my hair in the shade she decided upon which was not the shade I wanted. The instructor stops by at the end. Unless you want to complain about the student right in front of them, you are stuck. I feel they need to have a comment card that could help the student learn and not put the customer in a strained or stressful situation. My comment would of been, pulled my hair, gave me layers that I didn't want and colored my hair in a red shade that I specifically asked not to have.
Pros: Price was good. Haircut $13. and color $40. If you find a student you like you can request that person.
Cons: It's a risk. It takes about 4 hours. They try to get you to buy products.

I've been here twice and I'm not impressed. First, I had color done and it took about 5+ hours (which I can understand since they're students). It came out ok, but is has mostly faded in less than a month. I usually go without coloring for 4 months, so it's not normal for my hair to not hold the color. Crappy dye at Aveda, I guess. Then later, I went in for a haircut. The 'instructor' totally screwed it up and gave me a mullet. Plus, the students are pretty new, so you could get someone that has only been in school for a little over a month. If you need a trim, go get it done. Otherwise, go somewhere else!
Pros: cheap
Cons: parking

I have had nothing but bad experiences at this school. I do understand that the students are learning but they just dont seem even the slightest bit educated. I have gone in for a few facials [each time with a different student] and I never seem satisfied. I have also gone in for a brow wax & I am still in the process of letting them grow out. I also so I woman get her hair dyed & it turned out awful. She was so angry & her hair looked ruined. All & all I wouldn't recommend it.
Pros: Great atmosphere, Cheap
Cons: Un-educated students

I had an appointment for a spa facial and the treatment was absolutely relaxing! Clients are asked to wait in the spa lobby where you can read magazines and sip on tea while you wait for your turn.. Each client is brought into a separate treatment room which allows customers their individual privacy. The treatment area was clean and spacious. The facial was extremely relaxing and the student walked me through the procedure to let me know what she was doing, what products she was using, and how it would benefit my skin. It was a great and realxing experence!
Pros: Friendly staff, ambience, individual treatment space, clean facility, very relaxing
Cons: Parking can be difficult. Allow time to find street parking.

The color turned out alright (not my favorite but managable) but after four hours of getting my hair pulled for partial highlights, I am never going back. Although the color was only $35 the pain was not worth it. Let's face it, these students are not smooth with their technique and tend to get your hair in a knot! The $50 I saved by not going to a professional would have been worth it. A trim here may be fine, but go at your own risk...and bring some advil and a nice long book!
Pros: Cheap price
Cons: Took FOREVER and was super painful! Plus the color is very dull
