Easy, professional adoption

by aralani

My boyfriend and I recently adopted a cat from the Pixie Project. The shelter is located on MLK, and they have a beautiful walk-in cattery where you can hang out and get to know the cats without looking through cage bars or fighting through hordes of people. Once we'd chosen a cat, they approved us quickly and efficiently. The price is a little higher than other shelters, but the cats are fixed, chipped and tested (and they give you a 10% discount on any supplies you purchase that day). Everyone was incredibly nice and professional, not to mention interested in the welfare of their animals. I can't recommend this place enough!

  • Pros: Central location, good parking, good shelter hours
  • Cons: A little bit expensive, but not bad

Great experience!

by AAPDX

We adopted a dog from the Pixie Project and couldn't have been happier. The staff was kind, knowledgeable, and almost as excited as we were about getting our dog. They have an intense commitment to the animals, and for and owners, and making sure the pet is going to the right place and will be taken care of for life.

We were also amazed at how economical it was. Friends of ours just paid almost $1000 for a pure bred lab, and our dog plus all the supplies wasn't even a quarter of that. We continue to shop for all our pet supplies at their store because 100% of the proceeds go right back to helping the pets. They remember us (and our dog!) by name and are just the nicest people.

  • Pros: Great service, highly knowledgeable, continuing dedication.
  • Cons: none

Best Adoption Experience Ever. Ever.

by rockchalk1979

In meeting with the ladies at the Pixie Project to adopt our dog Newman, we found the most loving and supportive animal rescue staff I have ever encountered. Amy (co-founder) made it clear that if Newman were to be lost or stolen, we should call her and she would personally help us look for him. If we couldn't care for him at any point in his life, we were told to bring him back in, no judgment passed. Furthermore, she gave us her personal cell phone number, just in case something went wrong and we needed her to come to our house to check things out. I was dumbfounded by her love and dedication to each and every single one of the hundreds of animals that pass through her rescue project.

PP does indeed have an extensive application project, but I find this comforting in a way. For one, if you're not willing to take the time to fill out a questionnaire, are you really willing to take the time to care for your pet? Also, Newman had been in 4 different homes before we got him at 1.5 years old -- It would break my heart to see him returned and sent to yet another home -- this questionnaire and screening process are simply designed to make sure that the adoption is the right fit and that things like this don't happen... that all Newmans have forever homes. Some people truly don't understand the responsibility of owning a pet and the ladies at the PP want to make sure you have the whole story before you commit to the responsibility of another life.

I hate to say it, but sounds like the reviewer above is a little bitter at being rejected for a realistic reason -- We discussed this process with the PP ladies when we went through it and I was told that very few people are ever rejected -- but if they are, there is a reason... they're not just being mean.

  • Pros: Friendly and supportive staff, location, dedication to clients and pets
  • Cons: No cons

Worst Adopt Agency ever, avoid

by AngryAdopter

We came across a dog that we wanted to adopt off of PetFinder and requested more information via email. They told us to fill out the application and turn it in, that we couldn't meet the pet first. After filling out a lengthy application and answering what felt like a million questions we sent in the application. It asked questions about where the dog will be during the day and how much it will be left alone, etc.

I then got a response saying the adoption committee would reply within 24 hours. 48 hours later after sending two emails about what was going on, they responded declining our application for adoption. They said that the dog could not be left alone outside for extended periods of time, which was not stated anywhere on the pets information online. I then replied telling them it would not be the case that I would be home to walk it regularly and it would occassionally go to doggie daycare, but most of the time would be spent inside.

It took them another 48 hours to respond and this time they said it could not go to doggie daycare due to it not getting along with other dogs. AGAIN, not stated anywhere on the PetFinder website.

It just seems like excuse after excuse came up as to why we were not fit to adopt. My husband and I own our own home with a yard, no other pets and no kids, have even owned other labs in the past. We have plenty of time to spend with the dog and can afford one, so why deny us the right to adopt a dog????? Especially in this failing economy when most families can't keep their homes!

There are so many other animals out there that need adopting so we will continue our search. But beware trying to adopt from them. It is not worth your time to fill out the lengthy application and have them reject you for rediculous reasons.

  • Pros: None
  • Cons: Everything!!
