soul food by ann l. at InsiderPages

This is another small place in the area, with great soul food. They have the best ribs and the very best coleslaw, love the sauce they use. The prices are good for the amount of food served.
1:15 Min Wait, WTF
by member11031 at Citysearch
I stopped in for lunch and there was one person in the place. I ordered beef brisket and a pork shoulder, a hour and fifteen minutes later the food came out. The food was good, but not worth the wait. I could have driven home, made a home made bbq sauce, slaughtered the cow and cooked it faster than Reo's Ribs. All I wanted was some BBQ for lunch and I could have went to a stand on the side of the road and received like kind quality food and saved an hour of wait time. They really need to get their s#!t together, who makes their customers wait an hour and fifteen minutes for BBQ? I wouldn't go back for a free meal, it wouldn't be worth my time.
- Pros: Good food
- Cons: way to long of a wait for food I can get anywhere
Great food, great experience

We had baby backs, beef ribs, spicy chicken wings, brisket and sides of green beans, greens, hush puppies, cornbread and fried okra. We had wanted some fried catfish too, but found out (later) that they were out. When the food came, everything was great! They did mix up and brought us potato salad instead of fried okra, but that was corrected and we had fried okra before we were done with the other items. Definitely not a 'fancy night out'. This is true to classic Southern soul food. I am a native of Arkansas and Missouri, and have many kin in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.
No, it wasn't the 'best BBQ I have ever eaten', but it was reasonably priced, good food and we finished everything.
- Pros: Food was all great
- Cons: Little mix up on order

Average BBQ, nothing too special, i got the super meat plate, with ribs, brisket, and sausage. My two sides were coleslaw and potato salad. I think the attraction is that it is Snoop Dogg's uncle. I guess it is kinda cool when you walk in to see pictures of someone famous all over the place, but they need to work on cleanliness, BIG TIME. I understand it isn't gourmet, but the fundamentals of all good food comes with a clean kitchen, and proper sanitation. Like I said, fairly average BBQ, coming from Texas, I feel i know a little bit about BBQ. Something to keep in mind though, they only scored 70 on their inspection, pretty much a fail in my book.
- Pros: If you REALLY want BBQ it is ok
- Cons: very very dirty
I know the place is a dump, over priced, and mismanaged...but hey, bbq is an art, not time in oven.

I hate reo's ribs, because I once drove out there and it was like in a twilight zone...like I traveled back in time of poor texas neighbor hood back in 70's....but to all you critics, ask your self this...how many bbq joint that you know of, will serve you a fresh bbq off their grill? no one unless it's done yourself! it's just not physically possible unless the joint is hopping to turn their food around fast, and Portland or Beaverton crowd isn't your bbq eating clients. So they will either get microwaved food or from oven re-heated stuff, and thereby hangs a tail of all these critics that supposedly know the bbq business! I sincerely don't know of any quality bbq place in Northwest unless except somewhat acceptable place like Podnah's or Campbell's , and even at that food is not going to be perfectly consistent sometimes because it's cooked in a wood smoker(I've seen their smoker)...If a bbq food is too perfect and consistent everytime, it's coming from the electric or gas oven, or one of those stainless steel pellet burning digital timer and thermostat like the way they do at the Russell street bbq! and that's not a real bbq.. To me, I don't want no gas, electric, pellets or briquets of charcoal, I want a real WOOD burning bbq even if it's in a drum can...and even if it's scorched sometimes, you have to give credit to all those folks working hard to serve you a bbq best they can. That is why I gave reo's three stars, I sympathize their effort. and these so-called bbq critics are just looking for something to nag at....in this bad economy times.
Best Brisket and Cornbread in town, don't bother with the rest
by skippy0651 at Citysearch
the title says it all... the brisket sandwich is a steal (the bread doesnt sandwich the meat so much as serve as a platform for it), and the cornbread is awesome. don't worry yourself about the rest too much, and don't try to eat there every day. yum.
- Pros: Beef brisket sandwich, cornbread
- Cons: Trailer park ambience
Awful, awful, awful

Food was terrible, greasy and fatty. Obviously reheated and poor quality and expensive. We barely ate it and became physically ill from it. The place is unsanitary and dirty. Too many other great places in Portland to waste your money here.
Disappointing

Since moving here four months ago, I'd been looking forward to getting a chance to try Reo's. The place looked like a dive and everyone knows about it, which usually means a great, inexpensive meal. However, that wasn't the case. We got two of the sampler platters, which is recommended for your first time. They didn't have any yams, so I got the baked beans instead. The beans were ok, but very strange tasting and unlike any I've had before. The macaroni and cheese was good for the first few bites, but then the strange sour quality began to get old, and I was wishing for some good ol' shells & cheese instead. As for the rest, the ribs had almost no substance besides some burnt tasting sauce and a tiny amount of chewy meat. The chicken was too gross to eat; it looked like a huge hunk of fat and bone, and not much else. I must say that the brisket was amazingly good, but I also wonder if it just seemed good in comparison to everything else. I'm not at all a picky eater; I grew up on a ranch in which we ate pretty much anything, but I wouldn't eat at Reo's again.
- Pros: Brisket, kind of interesting atmosphere
- Cons: Everything else
OVER RATED.....

I went to Reo's because the place is closer to me then Yam Yam's out on NE MLK. However what I found was the drive to Yam Yam's is worth it. I being from the deep south I wanted Greens Collard Greens, I have never had greens that tasted so bad WAY WAY WAY to much hot sauce, just because it sets your tongue on fire does not make it good. I am used to greens being flavored with ham hock and I have never in my life had greens that the juice was slimmy like when you make boiled okra and the cat fish is spicy hot as well and $16.00 a pound, just so you know you can buy catfish for $4.00 a pound in any grocery store. My point is if you want good "soul food" Yam Yams can not be beat, as for Reo's ribs and BBQ yes dry and not very much meat on them. I will never go again, I will always from now on take the drive to Yam Yam's
- Pros: There are no Pros
- Cons: Crappy overly spiced up food-- set your tongue on fire spicy hot
