Love the Rat, Feel Like a Local
by August West
This place is the ultimate. Whether you are at T-Line, Meadows, or SloBowl, the Rat is the perfect place to end your day. If you are coming from Meadows, have a friend drop you off at Timberline Lodge and ride the Alpine Trail down to Gov'y, right on up to the door at the Rat. Unstrap and leave your board/skis in the corner as you warm up to a cozy, local feeling atmosphere. Snow-fans young and old mingle and laugh with thoughts and stories of the powder fields of the volcano. The restaurant is separated by a door with a wall, minors on one side, alcohol lovers on the other. Sporting events of any significance (BLAZERS!) are always on the 6 foot projection screen TV, unless there is live entertainment, in which case the bar-side flats-creens will be airing only. Remember, though, there is that other side for minors. Therefore, beware the uptight Portland yuppie who is too cheap to eat at the mountain and thinks that it will be a great idea to take the family to the Rat after the day lifts close and get five star service when the place is packed. They can be spotted by their glowery faces amongst the happy ones around them due to the fact that they may actually have to go to the bar to get their own soda. MY WORD! CAN YOU IMAGINE???
- Pros: Great bartenders, great pizza, cold beer
- Cons: Complaining Yuppies
you must try Mama Jimmys Chowder
by VedaYoder
refering to a name "Mama jimmy", they give credit to a person who is never seen. We have stoped there several times, havent seen no Mama jimmy. we have the chowder when it is offered. allways excellent. The pizza is also wonderful. I live on the coast and I have never had chowder this wonderful.
On one trip, we enjoyed a chicken dinner "mama jimmy' had cooked. It was very enjoyable, also the best fried chicken I believe, I have enjoyed. if you are in a 50 mile radius, you must stop here, sit by the fire and HAVE SOME CHOWDER, AND A AWESOME BLOODY MARY, FROM "KRISPIAN"?.

Oh dear. I think someone needs

to get their management in order. It really doesn't matter how much money you put into a place. If you don't have an idea of how to run it, nothing will work and this is the case for the Ratskeller. Sloppy service and servers. A real don't care attitude and there is nothing quality about the place. A shame really because it has potential. It needs good characters on their team, good management and certainly an idea of customer service. i will give it one more try to prove me wrong but fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me. Best of luck a little effort goes a long way.
- Pros: ambience location
- Cons: food service and staff appearance and attitude
Worst Customer Service Ever
by kdork
The ratskeller officially has the worst customer service I have ever received. It almost seems like they have employee meetings on how to make customers want to get up and leave. I have been there twice and the place is just horrible. I agree with the first two reviews that yes the food is pretty good--but with the kind of service I received each time I wouldn't trust them to make something I am going to eat . The kitchen looked filthy-food all over the floor. They make you pay in advance so don't tip well until you know you got good service. The first time I went the bartender told us we would have to leave because he wanted to close 3 hours early to chase down some drunk floozies that had just stopped by. The second time we were told we couldn't order pizza at a pizza joint, they ran out of forks and said fine I'll get you one after we asked for a fork for a salad and we got a plastic one, when asked for a refill on a soda that we had to go up to the bar to get they said "fine, what are you drinking", one of my friends was demanded to stand up and move and then was shoved by a waiter who was trying to get out cardboard boxes they stored behind our table, I witnessed other patrons get yelled at by waiters and waived away by "busy" staff. Throughout this whole ordeal where our group of only four was made to feel like intruders that they didn't want there--the staff seemed to be focused on hanging out with the locals and ignoring the restaurant full of customers. I heard similar stories from my brother on the one occasion he went there. Avoid this place--go to Charlies across the street or stay home but if you go to the Ratskeller you will just end up feeling like they want you to leave--I hope this place does something to fix its poor service because it really does have a cool atmostphere and tasty food but its not worth it. Thats all--done ranting. :)
- Pros: Nice atmostphere, good eats
- Cons: Horrible Customer Service
Good food, brew, and music
by jim74
"No Quams here.......This is the kind of place you always hoped for. Good food, Beer, (remodeled atmosphere was needed), great soundsystem where they have a good variety of music on the weekends. The service was a little slow, but all together I would definately take a group of friends here. Finally there is a place you can count on for entertainment when staying up at the mountain. I hear they are having a ski/snowboard party sat. Dec 29th. (big house dj) They are comin up. I know where I will be that weekend. Pray for snow!"
- Pros: Food, beer, music
- Cons: slow service
New Owners make this Mt. spot a must stop
by dredc
As of 2006, the infamous Ratskeller has changed ownership. We stopped in on a Saturday and couldn't have been more surprised! New owners introduced non-smoking, a clean atmosphere, and new menu. In addition to pizza, the Ratskeller now serves delicious Mexican food that is way healthier and cheaper than anything else on the Mountain. With the promise of outdoor seating and fresh juice drinks, we will definitely stop in again!
- Pros: Non-smoking, Great Live Music, Rotating Beer Taps
- Cons: Small bathrooms
