good idea but needs improvements

by InternetIsASeriesOfTubes

thin walls in the hotel allows you to listen to everyone doing everything.

crowds of loud 40-somethings devolving down a few notches in the food chain.

i guess what else do you expect when there are bars around every corner and in every little room on the property.

not a good place for a quiet getaway. i wouldnt recommend staying there, but find someone to be a designated driver and go have have fun for a night.

  • Pros: creative renovations
  • Cons: thin walls in hotel, drunk rowdy middle-aged people

Going down!

by Expert in food

I used to love this place for years and used to go there at least twice a week but my last 5 visits were simply the last because, the rooms are old and they stay old, broken beds, no hot water and it takes forever to get a service, the receptionists are slow and taking phone calls while talking to clients; the food is the worst, simply childs play unless its over $25 then dont bother cause you will throw up, the drinks are fake and the wine glasses are barely 4 oz, brak fast belw zero, lunch is not worth it AT all, dinner has better choices; if they dont do something about it then its going down 100% IN NO TIME.

  • Pros: Location and facility
  • Cons: 17 century rooms, bad bad food, no hot water.

Wonder why employees are as they are....

by RBruce

Hows this for kicks. A Gal that worked at Ruby's spa did a service on a gal that was getting married the next day. After the service the client mentioned to the spa worker that one of her finger nail had broken. The spa worker said if you can come in early I will fix it for you. The client came and was treated wonderfully. Her nails were done and prepared for her wedding she was estatic. However once management heard what the spa worked did they FIRED her on the spot. They said that service was not on the menu. She made a client very happy on her wedding day and she got fired. OK now you dont have to wonder why the employeees act as they do. We can put this one to bed.

  • Pros: still looking
  • Cons: bad service bad management bad bad bad

What A Waste Of Beauty.

by Oregonjaybird

The grounds rock, the art is fantastic, the beers are up to standards with other mediocre micro-breweries... however:

What does it take to get a HAPPY, speedy wait person or good food at this place??

This is somewhere you take your out-of-town guests because it's "so cool." That's about it. Or you really don't know where else to go that day/night and it's big, well known, and crowded, so you go there.

If you want quality food, however, you have barked up the wrong tree, my friend. To note: how can one company single-handedly mess up french-fries SO completely? Honestly? Who in world gave the green light to these 3 inch greasey, burnt tasting things? It absolutely baffles my mind to think they've been serving the SAME bad fries year after year... after year... after year. Has anyone in management ever tasted these?!

Finally... super snooty, slow, "you'll get it when you get it" employees await you around every corner. It's that hipster-chic garbage that the rest of the world doesn't find so quaint. I honestly don't care how "funky" your vintage t-shirt is; a genuine smile, quick service, and a thank you go a lot farther in my circles.

  • Pros: Great Atmosphere
  • Cons: Consistently Terrible Food

If you can't have fun here, then you need to relax

by sniderto

Sure some of the staff seem a bit aloof, but the eclectic variety of places to relax and drink some beer/wine/spirits, combined with a consistently good rotation of live music and a number of other activities, makes Edgefield a great place to spend an evening. You can sample some wines and enjoy some tunes. Have a beer and a cigar by a fire in a cozy brick shed. Not to mention shoot some pool, play some golf, visit the glass blowing studio, sit out on the patio, watch a flick, etc. etc. If you cannot have a good time here, then relax, or get some new company.

  • Pros: Atmosphere, variety

Straight pimpin at Edgewood

by pimpdiggity

Scoring Big @ Edgewood with Tony T-Money and the Crew: This rocking place kept T-Money and the Wrecking Crew kicking it like Tai-Bo all night long. T was kind enuff to leave his credit card and pick up the tab for all the sweet honeys! We thought we lost him in the cleavage of Miss California but he survived, yelled "cut me Mick!" and went in for the TKO! Gino was ready to front the bail money, but T-Money was all good. Fortunately you can buy enough beer to please a posse at McMennamin's without making a dent in the company pocketbook. Sully found the wings and the beer slide in and out just as easily - and the chicks too! Sweet lady LuLu kept it real while Bookie and his soon to be life-time sweetie Carny chugged some cheap ones. As for Mr. Pimpdiggity - well, if you want to know the rest, buy the rights!

Dog nappers

by dognappers

After a day of hiking with my dog our friends and I stopped for a nice cold beer,

not being able to bring the dog on the grounds (to our surprise) we parked in a

shaded spot and left the windows unrolled several inches. We went to the

downstairs bar for bad food and NO service to return to our car with the dog MIA

Turns out a concerned citizen notified a staff member because our dog is a

whiner, which notified the human society-rather then taking a minute to look

for the owners. Being from out of town and it being a Sunday it took about

300 miles of driving and 75 bucks to bail our dog out of the Animal hospital

that they failed to tell us they had taken him to. I would just have liked the

same effort that they had put into calling someone else to brake into the car

put into finding us on the grounds that we where obviously in.

  • Pros: atmosphere
  • Cons: lousy service

Could be great if anyone there gave a darn

by tn01

This place is basically a lovely, sprawling compound of little bars and places to discover. They also offer free music most nights of the week. Add in their own wines and beers and it sounds like nirvana.

That's what I'm always hoping for, anyway, but it never works out. Most of the staff acts as if they're too hip to be bothered, and your presence is an inconvenience to them. The wait to be seated is always ridiculous in the pub, even when I can see empty tables. The food is just cranked out--not terrible, but nothing you couldn't get at a cafeteria. Even the beers are a crapshoot.

I still go for the music, but that's an exercise in frustration too. For some reason they can't be bothered to put WHERE the music is going to be on their web calendar. If you call to inquire, they may or may not bother to pick up the phone. And if you do find out which building, you better already know where that is on the grounds. There's no map of the maze of buildings (which should be right on the webpage), and if you ask you are lucky if they grunt and wave in a general direction before immediately turning their back on you and walking away while you're still talking.

I'd love to recommend this place to everyone, but unless you're planning to just hang out all day and drink enough to feel extremely tolerant of frustration, it may not be worth the trouble.

  • Pros: Free music most nights, good to wander and hang out
  • Cons: Poor service. Very disorganized

Beware of the shrimp!

by mcpherren

I had a very strange experience at Edgefield this week when I decided to have lunch there with a friend. First of all, I called the day before to make a reservation at 11:45am. I was put on hold for about 3 minutes and when I finally spoke to someone and asked for a reservations for 2, I was told that there was no room available. When I asked again, for only 2 people, I was rudely told that it sounded like I said 15. Wow! Should have been a clue. But no, I went anyway. The menu stated that shrimp bisque was available and since soup sounded great to me, I ordered it. What arrived wasn't bisque at all but a mound of rice with tasteless red sauce and a collection of small shrimp scattered about. I tried my best to eat this mixture, being the type of person that rarely complains to restaurants. But I honestly couldn't do it. After paying my bill, I returned to my home with the worst stomach pains and cramps I've ever had in my life. For the rest of the day, I was extremely sick. Was there a connection? Timing tells me yes. After several bad experiences with service, I came back to McMenamins Edgefield after 1 year for this particular lunch - with hope that things might have improved. But now I can truly tell you that this is absolutely the last place I would go to eat or recommend to someone I valued.
