Sure some of the staff seem a bit aloof, but the eclectic variety of places to relax and drink some beer/wine/spirits, combined with a consistently good rotation of live music and a number of other activities, makes Edgefield a great place to spend an evening. You can sample some wines and enjoy some tunes. Have a beer and a cigar by a fire in a cozy brick shed. Not to mention shoot some pool, play some golf, visit the glass blowing studio, sit out on the patio, watch a flick, etc. etc. If you cannot have a good time here, then relax, or get some new company.

  • Pros: Atmosphere, variety
  • Cons: none

Scoring Big @ Edgewood with Tony T-Money and the Crew: This rocking place kept T-Money and the Wrecking Crew kicking it like Tai-Bo all night long. T was kind enuff to leave his credit card and pick up the tab for all the sweet honeys! We thought we lost him in the cleavage of Miss California but he survived, yelled "cut me Mick!" and went in for the TKO! Gino was ready to front the bail money, but T-Money was all good. Fortunately you can buy enough beer to please a posse at McMennamin's without making a dent in the company pocketbook. Sully found the wings and the beer slide in and out just as easily - and the chicks too! Sweet lady LuLu kept it real while Bookie and his soon to be life-time sweetie Carny chugged some cheap ones. As for Mr. Pimpdiggity - well, if you want to know the rest, buy the rights!

After a day of hiking with my dog our friends and I stopped for a nice cold beer,

not being able to bring the dog on the grounds (to our surprise) we parked in a

shaded spot and left the windows unrolled several inches. We went to the

downstairs bar for bad food and NO service to return to our car with the dog MIA

Turns out a concerned citizen notified a staff member because our dog is a

whiner, which notified the human society-rather then taking a minute to look

for the owners. Being from out of town and it being a Sunday it took about

300 miles of driving and 75 bucks to bail our dog out of the Animal hospital

that they failed to tell us they had taken him to. I would just have liked the

same effort that they had put into calling someone else to brake into the car

put into finding us on the grounds that we where obviously in.

  • Pros: atmosphere
  • Cons: lousy service

This place is basically a lovely, sprawling compound of little bars and places to discover. They also offer free music most nights of the week. Add in their own wines and beers and it sounds like nirvana.

That's what I'm always hoping for, anyway, but it never works out. Most of the staff acts as if they're too hip to be bothered, and your presence is an inconvenience to them. The wait to be seated is always ridiculous in the pub, even when I can see empty tables. The food is just cranked out--not terrible, but nothing you couldn't get at a cafeteria. Even the beers are a crapshoot.

I still go for the music, but that's an exercise in frustration too. For some reason they can't be bothered to put WHERE the music is going to be on their web calendar. If you call to inquire, they may or may not bother to pick up the phone. And if you do find out which building, you better already know where that is on the grounds. There's no map of the maze of buildings (which should be right on the webpage), and if you ask you are lucky if they grunt and wave in a general direction before immediately turning their back on you and walking away while you're still talking.

I'd love to recommend this place to everyone, but unless you're planning to just hang out all day and drink enough to feel extremely tolerant of frustration, it may not be worth the trouble.

  • Pros: Free music most nights, good to wander and hang out
  • Cons: Poor service. Very disorganized

I had a very strange experience at Edgefield this week when I decided to have lunch there with a friend. First of all, I called the day before to make a reservation at 11:45am. I was put on hold for about 3 minutes and when I finally spoke to someone and asked for a reservations for 2, I was told that there was no room available. When I asked again, for only 2 people, I was rudely told that it sounded like I said 15. Wow! Should have been a clue. But no, I went anyway. The menu stated that shrimp bisque was available and since soup sounded great to me, I ordered it. What arrived wasn't bisque at all but a mound of rice with tasteless red sauce and a collection of small shrimp scattered about. I tried my best to eat this mixture, being the type of person that rarely complains to restaurants. But I honestly couldn't do it. After paying my bill, I returned to my home with the worst stomach pains and cramps I've ever had in my life. For the rest of the day, I was extremely sick. Was there a connection? Timing tells me yes. After several bad experiences with service, I came back to McMenamins Edgefield after 1 year for this particular lunch - with hope that things might have improved. But now I can truly tell you that this is absolutely the last place I would go to eat or recommend to someone I valued.

  • Pros: Parking
  • Cons: Service, Food, Overall Experience

I've always loved Edgefield for the beautiful grounds and amazing deals on wine tasting and now that I live close to it I visit it at least once a month. My husband and I will often trot over to have dinner at the Power House then take a walk up the the golf course bar and then back down to the wine tasting area... it's a great place to sit and visit with friends or listen to live music outside of the Little Red Shed. It's also a great place to stay- except on the weekends if you want a quiet night. As I read the reviews I"m annoyed with the over and over again "and there's no tv in your room!" For me, I go to McMenamins because it's inexpensive, I can usually find privacy, and I can GET AWAY from the phone and tv! I don't want a tv in my room when I'm on vacation- I'd rather go out and experience the hotel I'm staying at our the city I'm in!

  • Pros: Beer Selection, Quaint and Relaxing Atmosphere, Great Deals, Beautiful Grounds, Lots to walk around and see
  • Cons: McMenamin's well known average service, loud on weekends

I've been to several McMenamins throughout the Portland area. Typically I love their service, atmosphere and food; however, despite three visits, I remain unimpressed with the service at McMenamin's Edgefield. Most recently, my husband and I paid a visit to Lucky Staehly's Pool Hall on the Edgefield property. It took nearly a half hour for us to be noticed by a waitress (actually, we had to flag her down, she had checked on several tables around us, but failed to stop by our table). When we did finally get her attention, she had an attitude that made us seem like we were the biggest inconvenience in her day. She took our order with a snotty attitude and we had to wait another 45 minutes to actually get our food. The service we got on our previous visit to Lucky Staehly's Pool Hall was average, but not stunning.

On a prior visit to the Black Rabbit Restaurant, we waited nearly 15 minutes before a staff member even saw that we were waiting to get a table...as were several other people. We waited quite a while for our food, which wasn't that tasty (not typical McMenamins quality) and then that was the last that we saw of our waiter until he brought the check.

My husband and I are both restaurant owners ourselves, and this type of service is completely unacceptable.

  • Pros: Beautiful property, fun atmosphere
  • Cons: Horrible service!!

Edgefield is actually not a typical McMenamins. It's sprawling and is sometimes a victim of its own success on busy summer evening on the outside patio. It's nice to go out and have that "out in the country feel", just don't take your dog as - unlike most other McMenamins places - you can't take your dog in at all.

Good beer, reaonable food, good location vs. unattentive staff and a bad pets policy.

  • Pros: Beer, quirkyness, location
  • Cons: No pets, staff aren't all that attentive.

We were originally gonna eat at the Power House there but there was a 20 min wait. So, my bf and I walked over to the Black Rabbit( A resturant at Edgefield) It should have been a sign to us to not eat there when we saw how empty it was. But we waited becuase we were hungry. Through the course of the wait three staff memebers walked right past us without a greeting. Finally we were sat. Then we waited and waited . Finally we were about to leave and the waitress showed up. She took my drink order and left without asking my bf if he would like anything. Finally she came back and we ordered his drink and she took our orders. We got our food, but still no drink for my bf. The food was awful and way way way over priced with small portions. Our tab was $80 for two drinks and two main dishs. Our waitress seemed bothered by our presence and we had to wait long intervals before she remembered that we were her table. I dont normally complain which I should have and somehow I still tipped. Save your self the money and stick to the Power House even if theres a wait!!

  • Pros: relaxing environment
  • Cons: bad food/ poor service

My husband and I got married there, and as much as we loved the atmosphere, we were left really unimpressed by the catering department. The chicken was inedible, the prime rib was overcooked, and the catering department took and lost our cake and knife server (it was found by them at one point but mysteriously lost again). We did however have a good experience with the event planner, and thought the servers did a really nice job.
